Let's learn about this fascinating literary figure together.

King Arthur is a legendary character who has aroused the interest of many since the Middle Ages. According to legend, he was a British leader who fought against the Anglo-Saxon invaders between the 5th and 6th centuries. Many attempts have been made to identify him as a real historical figure, but it is the legend surrounding Arthur and his companions, the Knights of the Round Table, that have truly made him immortal.

Complete 16 tasks (one from each section).

Tasks

1. The Ancient English Chronicles

Those who believe King Arthur was inspired by a historical figure use several ancient English chronicles as evidence. Most notably, The Annales Cambriae, written around 970, and The Historia Brittorum, compiled in the 9th century. In both these chronicles, Arthur is presented as a leader who fights the Saxons. But the first mention of Arthur is in the Welsh poem, Y Gododdin, attributed to a bard who lived in the 7th century, though the oldest manuscript of this poem existing today dates back to the 13th century (pictured above). It was, however, The Historia Brittorum that has inspired most of the novels about the Arthurian cycle.

✱ Read a book with a page count that includes one of the following numbers: 9, 7, 1, 3 (share count) OR read a book whose author's initials can be found in HISTORIA BRITTORUM.

2. Geoffrey of Monmouth

It was in The Historia Regum Britanniae by Godfrey of Monmouth, that the first account of the life of King Arthur appeared. This work, written in Latin around 1138, is a fantastic chronicle of British Kings, starting with an elusive Trojan hero to a Welsh king who lived in the 7th century. To give you an idea of the acclaim that this work has known, to date there are over 200 handwritten copies in Latin, as well as an unknown number of translations in other languages!

✱ Read a book with a royal character (tell us who) OR read a book that has been translated from its original language.

3. Chrétien de Troyes

It was the 12th century French poet, Chrétien de Troyes, who made Arthur legendary with his novels dedicated to the so-called Breton cycle. It was he who invented characters that became fundamental in the Arthurian legend, such as Lancelot and Parsifal. But above all, he was the first to focus the adventures of the Knights of Arthur on the search for the Holy Grail, the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper and latter used to collect his blood after the crucifixion.

✱ Read a book set in France OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in CHRETIEN DE TROYES (3 Word Minimum).

4. Thomas Malory

The English poet Thomas Malory (d. 1471), gathered all the English and French publications existing at his time on Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and compiled a work known as Le Morte d'Arthur (The Death of Arthur). In 1485, this work was printed for the first time and since then, it has known an impressive number of editions and translations. The original manuscript of this important Arturian document was discovered in Winchester in 1934.

✱ Read a book with books on the cover (post cover) OR read a book with a title that begins with a letter in MALORY (ignore A, An or The).

5. King Arthur in Later Literature

With the end of the Middle Ages, the legend of Arthur experienced a period of little interest, only to be rediscovered at the beginning of the 19th century during Romanticism. In the following century, Arthur and his companions were the focus of comics, cartoons, films, and numerous other books. It was, above all, the fantasy genre and that of the historical novel that made great use of this legendary figure. In fantasy, we must remember the Avalon cycle by Marion Zimmer Bradley, while for the historical novel one of the most important writers was Jack Whyte, who has written multiple series inspired by the Arthurian cycle. Both the authors cited here have been translated into several languages as proof of the newfound fortune of the Arthurian legend.

✱ Read a book inspired by the story of King Arthur - here's a great GR list for inspiration: The Arthurian Legend Retold OR read a book tagged FANTASY or HISTORICAL on its GR homepages.

6. King Arthur, a Historical Figure?

We have seen how the legend of King Arthur was born, but several scholars believe he was actually inspired by a real person. The proponents of this idea underline that the halt of the Anglo-Saxon expansion of the 5th and 6th centuries suggests that there must have been a warrior capable of stopping these invaders. Problems arise when it comes to identifying this warrior. Some propose he was Welsh, but the hypothesis that has the most strength, is the one that identifies him as being of Roman descent, with Ambrosio Aureliano (a powerful Roman-British leader) being the most likely. It is worth remembering that during that time there were Roman cavalry units stationed along Hadrian's Wall, which could have influenced the idea of the Knights of the Round Table.

✱ Read a book that features an invasion, battle, or war (your interpretation; briefly share details) OR read a book set in England.

7. The Places of King Arthur: Tintagel

On the north coast of Cornwall stands Tintagel, the place where Arthur was supposedly conceived, thanks to a spell from Merlin. The castle was actually built several centuries later, although archaeological excavations do show that the location had been inhabited since at least the 6th century. Be that as it may, the remains of the castle are among the most visited places in Cornwall and has become an important part of the Arthurian "imagination", as evidenced by the modern statue of the king that was erected there.

✱ Read a book with a castle-like building or statue on the cover (post cover) OR read a book where a birth (human or animal) takes place (briefly share details).

8. The Places of King Arthur: Camelot

Camelot is the legendary fortress where King Arthur lived and it first appeared in the work of Chrétien de Troyes, gaining more and more importance in later works. It most likely never existed in reality, though many have tried to determine its location. Thomas Malory identified it with the city of Winchester. Surely it must have been, if it really existed, in the western area of the island, so the hypothesis that its name derives from Camulodunum (the current Colchester) must be discarded, because it would place it on the wrong side of the country.

✱ Read a book set in a place whose name begins with a letter in CAMELOT OR read a book set in a fictional city or village (share name).

9. The Places of King Arthur: Glastonbury

According to legend, Joseph of Arimathea came to Glastonbury with the Holy Grail, creating the first Christian community in the British Isles. The abbey was a place of pilgrimage until it was destroyed during the English Civil War, between 1536 and 1541.
In 1191 the monks claimed to have found the tomb of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, but their presumed remains mysteriously disappeared. It is thought that the claim was a way to promote the pilgrimage to the abbey, helping to obtain the necessary funds needed to rebuild the abbey after it was destroyed by a fire. The presence of this tomb has meant that Glastonbury has been identified as Avalon, the mythical island where the corpse of King Arthur was brought. According to a legend, the king will come back to life when the world needs him.

✱ Read a book where a church, cemetery or religious community is important to the plot (tell us how) OR read a book where a fire occurs (briefly share details).

10. Arthurian Imagery: The Round Table

Among the undisputed symbols of the Arthurian cycle is the Round Table, around which sat the king and his knights. Being round, there was no "head seat", implying that everyone who sat there had equal status, avoiding conflicts between the various knights. There was, however, a seat reserved for the purest of knights known as "the Perilous Seat". In Winchester Castle there is a reproduction of the Round Table hanging on one of the walls of the Great Hall. It is the product of a very popular festival during the Middle Ages, called the "Round Table", which involved jousting, feasting, and dancing in imitation of King Arthur's legendary court.

✱ Read a book with all the letters of TABLE found in the title (any order) OR read a book where the MC has to face a dangerous situation (tell us briefly what happens).

11. Arthurian Imagery: The Sword in the Stone

King Arthur was the owner of at least two magical swords, although they are often confused with one another, and sometimes merged into a single sword. The first being Excalibur, which was given to him by the Lady of the Lake, and according to legend, the dying King Arthur threw this sword into a nearby lake. The second sword is the one he extracted from the rock, thus recognizing him as king. This myth of the sword in the stone can be found in other areas of Europe; one of particular note is that of San Galgano, found in The Montesiepi Chapel in Tuscany (see picture above). Galgano was a warrior who chose the life of a hermit and was later canonized after his death. His sword, which was embedded in a rock, represents the Cross.

✱ Read a book with the word SWORD found in the text (share text) OR read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in EXCALIBUR.

12. Arthurian Imagery: The Holy Grail

Another fundamental element of the Arthurian saga is the search for the Holy Grail by the Knights of the Round Table. As has already been said, the Grail was the cup with which Jesus celebrated the Last Supper and in which his blood was then collected after the crucifixion. The Grail has a high symbolic value and has always been considered magical, so much so that over the centuries it has been greatly sought after. There are many places known as being a hiding place for this relic. In the United Kingdom alone there are three: Glastonbury Abbey; an islet off the Isle of Man, where Joseph of Arimathea (the one who collected the blood of Jesus in the cup) is said to be buried; and Rosslyn Chapel, near Edinburgh.

✱ Read a book with the word BLOOD (intact) in the title OR read a book whose author's initials can be found in HOLY GRAIL.

13. The Companions of King Arthur: Merlin

Among the characters who flank King Arthur, one of the most important is without a shadow of a doubt Merlin. Today this magician has a positive image, that of a sage who inspires and helps the king, but in the Middle Ages he was painted in a very different way, sometimes even with almost diabolical connotations. A curiosity: in the forest of Paimport in Brittany, you can find the so-called Tomb of Merlin. It is a tree grown inside a rock, which has become a place of worship.

✱ Read a book with a magical element in it (tell us what) OR read a book with a controversial character (tell us why).

14. The Companions of King Arthur: Lancelot

Lancelot is represented as the most valiant and loyal of King Arthur's knights. He first appears in one of Chrétien de Troyes' novels and his illicit love for Guinevere, the king's wife, was the cause of Camelot's downfall. Despite this, today he is considered the prototype of the perfect warrior. And in some modern reworkings, the love between Lancelot and Guinevere finds a happy ending after the death of King Arthur, even gaining his approval.

✱ Read a book with an MC who is a soldier or warrior OR read a book with a title that begins with a letter in LANCELOT (ignore A, An or The).

15. The Companions of King Arthur: Galahad

Galahad is known as the one knight who actually found the Holy Grail. He was the son of Lancelot and Elaine, the daughter of the keeper of the Grail itself, the Fisher King. He represents the noblest and purest of knights and is the only one worthy of sitting at "the Perilous Seat" of the Round Table. Once he finds the Grail, he dies shortly after in a somewhat mystical way. He is one of the most recent characters, not appearing in the novels of the Breton cycle before the thirteenth century.

✱ Read a book where a character searches for something (tell us what) OR read a series book numbered AFTER the 13th (i.e. 14th or beyond).

16. Tristan and Isolde

One of the most famous stories related to the legend of King Arthur is that of the love between Tristan and Isolde, which dates back to some Celtic legends. Sent by his uncle, the King of Cornwall, to pick up his bride in Ireland, Tristan accidentally drinks a magic potion, which he then offers to Isolde. This results in the two falling madly in love with each other. Unlike that of Lancelot and Guinevere, which represents courtly love or platonic love, the story of Tristan and Isolde represents the story of an adultery and ends with the death of Tristan, followed by that of Isolde.

✱ Read a book set in a Celtic country or region (Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Ireland or Brittany) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in TRISTAN AND ISOLDE (3 Word Minimum).
