Of course, the classic source for this and previous books in the series is Plutarch's Lives. He covers the lives of Pompey, Crassus, Cicero, Caesar and others we have met. There are some online versions of this work, for instance at

While I'm not aware of any books that deal specifically with the women we've met or are about to meet, here are two which deal with women in general in this period.

Women's Life in Greece and Rome: A Source Book in Translation is a compendium of ancient sources on women in many topics, e.g. Men's Opinions, Legal Status, Private Life, Occupations. Citations from Greek and Roman sources are interspersed.

Women in the Classical World: Image and Text deals first with Greece and then with Rome. There are many citations from original sources.

Much of Cicero's writings survived while that of many others has been lost. He published many of his legal arguments, both as prosecutor and defense counsel, he wrote many philosophical treatises, and most entertaining of all, many of his letters to his brother-in-law Atticus and to others of his friends have been preserved.

Cicero's Letters To His Friends (Classical Resources Series (Amer Philogical Assn)) by Marcus Tullius Cicero De Officiis On Duties; or, On Obligations EasyRead Comfort Edition by Marcus Tullius Cicero Cicero Letters to Atticus, vol. 1-2 by Marcus Tullius Cicero Cicero Philippics I and II by Marcus Tullius Cicero Treatises on Friendship and Old Age by Marcus Tullius Cicero by Marcus Tullius Cicero Marcus Tullius Cicero

Cicero in Fiction

We know so much about Cicero that it's easy to base whole novels on his career. My favorite is Roman Blood, about Cicero's first murder trial defending a man called Roscius against the charge of parricide. He's helped by Gordianus the Finder in this first of the Roma Sub Rosa series.

Another in this series (Catilina's Riddle) deals with Cicero's accusations against Catilina for wanting to overthrow the government. The same events are covered from a different angle in SPQR II: The Catiline Conspiracy, part of the SPQR series of Roman mysteries.

Finally, Imperium and Conspirata are the first two in a planned trilogy about Cicero.

Bea | 1830 comments This book was probably key to to McCullough's research for this book. It covers the Jugurthine War and the Catiline Conspiracy.

카지노싸이트 blurb:

A masterpiece of dramatic narrative.

Sallust (86-c.35 B.C.), who had various public offices in Rome and later a governorship in Africa, supported the political group known as the populares. He was a friend of Caesar and an opponent of Cicero. His history of the war against Jugurtha, King of Numidia, and his account of Catiline's conspiracy in 63 B.C. are his only complete works to survive; they were written in the years after Caesar's assassination.

An English translation is available online here:

Here's an interesting book about Clodius, probably the only place you can see him treated sympathetically - The Patrician Tribune: Publius Clodius Pulcher

from the 카지노싸이트 page -

Publius Clodius Pulcher was a prominent political figure during the last years of the Roman Republic. Born into an illustrious patrician family, his early career was sullied by military failures and especially by the scandal that resulted from his allegedly disguising himself as a woman in order to sneak into a forbidden religious ceremony in the hope of seducing Caesar's wife. Clodius survived this disgrace, however, and emerged as a major political force. He renounced his patrician status and was elected tribune of the people. As tribune, he pursued an ambitious legislative agenda, winning the loyalties of the common people of Rome to such a degree that he was soon able to summon forceful, even violent, demonstrations on his own behalf.
The first modern, comprehensive biography of Clodius, "The Patrician Tribune" traces his career from its earliest stages until its end in 52 B.C., when he was murdered by a political rival. Jeffrey Tatum explores Clodius's political successes, as well as the limitations of his popular strategies, within the broader context of Roman political practices. In the process, Tatum illuminates the relationship between the political contests of Rome's elite and the daily struggles of Rome's urban poor.

Mithridates is covered in two interesting books. The oldest one is King of Pontus: The Story of Mithradates Eupator and a more recent one is The Poison King: The Life and Legend of Mithradates, Rome's Deadliest Enemy. Both cover his long and fascinating life, including his successful attempt to make himself immune to poisons.

The classical source of information about the Catiline conspiracy is by Sallust, Conspiracy of Catiline and the Jurgurthine War. This book contains two of Sallust's works. (The Jugurthine War was about about Rome's war against the Numidians from 111 to 105 BC.)

One version can be found online at

I recently received a copy of McCullough's bibliography from an online friend who got it in 1997. It's basically a listing of all the books in her extensive library of ancient history and is 37 pages long.
