The Roads That Led to Rome

Rate this book
This book is the fruit of the Roman Road Expedition. Victor von Hagen led a team for 5 years thru 34 countries & followed the course of more than 30,000 miles of Roman roads. The expedition conducted the 1st systematic study of the road system since the 3rd century of our era, when Antoninus Augustus prepared a military itinerary for the Emperor Caracalla. The monumental exploration took them over snow-covered Alps, thru deserts, bogs, moorlands, the arid Atlas mountains & the vast sand seas of Africa. His investigation of the roads that led to Rome provides, as well, a view of 800 years of Roman history. With 64 color & 150 black & white illustrations.

This is an exhaustive illustrated coffee-table book about the Roman Roads--all of them--based on an extensive survey. The engineering involved is discussed in detail.
