The Pictionary Challenge - May 2024

Pictionary, you either love it or you hate it. The aim is to guess what the drawer, who is drawing words from a list of cards, is drawing. For this challenge, simply read and review books as normal. However, if you would like to earn some bonus points, then follow the Pictionary rules!
Pictionary has a few categories, such as ‘Objects’, ‘Places/Animals’ and ‘Actions’. The mods played a little game according to these categories of Pictionary and came up with some great drawings (
Complete words by reading books with a letter of the word in the title/series name/author’s name. You can also complete a whole word with one book if you read a book with that specific word in the book title/series name/author’s name or if you read a book with that image on the cover! Some words, mainly under the category ‘action’, cannot be featured on the cover and should thus be claimed through letters.
Each time a word is completed, your team will be awarded bonus points. Each word can only be completed once unless all 24 words are completed, in which case words can be used again!

Eg: As a team you could complete the word ‘Cat’ in three ways.
Either with one book with that image on the book cover -
OR with three books with each a letter in the title/series name/author’s name -

- The Short Version -
★ YA/Adult Books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 50 pages*

★ Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 75 pages*

(maximum of 8 points per book)
★ Graphic novels/manga/poetry/plays/books written in verse/books which have some illustrations - *1 point per 150 pages*

(maximum of 4 points per book)
★ Buddy reads MATCH your points score for pages, so a 300-page book (6pts) + buddy read (6pts) = 12 points.

(Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in this group.)
★ If books are long enough to count on their own (50/75/150 pages) they will be scored on their own.
★ Individual bonus points will be awarded based on page count, the same as page points and buddy read points. So if you read a 300-page book that also matches a description, you will receive 6 page points and 6 bonus points ☺
★ For each word completed, the team receives 10 bonus points. For an entire board, the team bonus points will receive an additional 50 bonus points.
★ You can only claim a letter once per book. For example, you’ve read A Deadly Education and want to claim the ‘N’ in the word ‘Penguin’. This will not count for both N’s, just for one! So, it would be noted as follows:

★ You can only claim one word at a time with a cover, even if it fits multiple descriptions.
Hermione bonus points can be earned on books over 600 pages long, because Hermione loves a big book, and we love Hermione ❤️
Over 600 pages unillustrated book = 12 points
Over 600 pages unillustrated childrens/middle-grade book = 8 points
Over 600 pages illustrated/poetry etc. = 4 points

This challenge will be a team challenge. We will have a small number of teams, with a mixture of readers in each. When signing up please let us know whether you would like to be on a team, or whether you would like to go solo ☺
Teams should be posted by late April. If you sign-up after teams are posted, we will try to add you to a team, but we may not always be able to. You may be asked to join a waiting list. Please sign-up as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

This will be a team reading challenge which will run from May 1st 2024 to May 31st 2024. Results will be announced on June 1st 2024.
To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points by reading books which fit the descriptions below ☺
You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺
