Tr1sha | 321 comments As some of us will celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in early June, our monthly challenge looks back 70 years. The challenge is to read one or more books that were first published in the 1950’s. There are lots of possibilities, including the Narnia series & many of the books by Agatha Christie. Other examples include
My Cousin Rachel
My Family and Other Animals

Enjoy whatever book(s) you choose to read. Some members will have an extra holiday & perhaps be part of the Jubilee celebrations - have fun & enjoy this historic moment.

"Whoa, this is heavy!"
"There's that word again, 'Heavy'. Why is everything so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?"
~Marty and Doc, Back to the Future

So.... are you ready to go BACK to the 1950s?

Karin

I'll mark this spot, but no promises. I really haven't been reading many classics lately. However, I'll check my want to read shelf and see how I feel :)

Right now I'm undecided

Reserving my spot! I can fit in one book for sure.

This is a fabulous theme! I adore Queen Elizabeth - what a woman! I really wish I could visit the UK for the celebration.

Loving all these pictures, too!

Jazzy I saw the film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning years ago - it was so so good.

Nike | 257 comments I'm in and I will probably read The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith - a book about lesbian love that was very controversial when it came and therefore the author used a pseudonym. The alternative is Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Both of them have been on my "Read-them-NOW-list" for quite some time =)

June 2022 Challenge
-BTW,GREAT challenge!!!

Back to the 1950s
1/6/22 - 30/6/22

(5/5) COMPLETED 10/6/2022

Choices will be taken from something by :
John Wyndham
The Kraken Wakes
✔ (3/6/22)★★★★
Not as gripping as The Day of the Triffids-but,like a good deal of science fiction, this novel sees ahead of its time.LikeOrwell,Wyndham anticipates something that will happen in the future.

Arthur Miller
An Enemy of the People: An Adaptation of the Play by Henrik Ibsen
✔ (7/6/22)★★★★★
Superb.I watched this in production-the best way to experience a play!

Samuel Becket
Krapp's Last Tape
✔ (7/6/22)★★★★★
Preferred this to Waiting for Godot-the best live production for me was by English actor,John Hurt.

John Osborne
The Entertainer
✔ (7/6/22)★★★★★
They made a film of this and it is well worth seeing-a young Alan Bates and two Oliviers are in the cast.

Graham Greene
The Potting Shed
✔ (9/6/22)★★★★★
The first work of Graham Greene that I have read.A wonderful twist at the end!

I really enjoyed this challenge-will also read other books from the fifties eg The Bellby Iris Murdoch,The Quiet American by Graham Greene,The Ship That Died of Shameby Nicholas Monsarratand C S Lewis'biography Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life
