Val H. | 21803 comments The first bounce will be on Thursday March 19 so I thought I would get a thread up and running. Back soon with participants, teams, charities and Round 1 fixture.

Val H. | 21803 comments Last year's tipsters are listed below. Please let me know if you are keen to go round again and if you have any changes to your chosen team or charity. I posted a card to Suzy last week but I will email her and Blastro to double check. If Suzy is still having health problems, I am happy to do her tips for her - should be easy, just pick the underdogs in each game. I'll put a reminder up on the Premier League thread but I'm not sure Dean is still participating there. Anybody have any contact for him? I think I might have an old email for him. Will go and check. Assuming he is in, we still have Fremantle (the Dockers), Geelong (the Cats) and Hawthorn (the Hawks) available for adoption if anyone else would like to join us.

Val - Essendon (The Bombers) - Warchild -
Anita (Sydney Swans) - The Mirabel Foundation -
Lez - St Kilda (The Saints)- Dementia Australia -
The Foe - Melbourne (The Demons) - Launch Housing -

Philip - Richmond (The Tigers) - Canteen -
SJ Brooke- North Melbourne (The Kangaroos) - Backpack Bed For Homeless -

Hi Dean, Glad my message reached you and glad to have you back. Not sure what you mean by "Aussie rules page". If it's the official AFL website, that's at

The 2020 fixture (round by round) is at

and there's a .pdf page of the whole season at a glance at

Val H. | 21803 comments Yes, tech is right (or as usual, as he would surely have it!).

"The AFL executive and working party teams met for four hours Friday morning, and again for a similar amount of time Friday afternoon to work through all scenarios pertaining to the AFL season.

As it met in the morning, the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix was officially cancelled, and Cricket Australia decided to ban spectator attendance at Friday's one-day international between Australia and New Zealand at the SCG.

The no-crowd scenario became official when, 90 minutes after the AFL's executive meeting had finished, the Council Of Australian Government (COAG) chief medical officers convened for two hours to determine that mass gatherings of 500 people or more be cancelled."

Apparently the virus is very compliant and has agreed to hold off contaminating Aussies until Monday - that's when the 500+ ban comes into place. The National Rugby League will go ahead with the 5 games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday but Round 2 will be in closed stadiums. I have listened to all the best advice available (from the scientists and medicos, not the politicians) and have decided to forfeit my tickets to a play tomorrow. It's just not worth it. The Melbourne International Comedy Festival (640 events) has been cancelled, so that's another couple of shows I'll be getting my money back on. AND, I won't have to babysit on Friday night (while my daughter & husband went to the footy) but I will have to travel over there by train on Thursday to babysit while she's at work. Hopefully the trains will be empty - but I doubt it.

Val H. | 21803 comments The AFL has announced that, as things stand at the moment, they're planning a season of 17 rounds with every team playing each other once. It is still hoped that the Round 1 fixture will go ahead in closed stadiums. However, anything can happen between now and Thursday.

Interestingly, a former Eagles player has come out and said that playing in an empty stadium will redress the balance of umpires giving the Eagles a bit of a free ride because of the enormous crowd response. What the rest of us have been saying for years!

I have a very old email address for a Phil D... and I'm not even sure it's him. Grizzly is also MIA. The AFL confirmed tonight that Round 1 will definitely go ahead as scheduled.

message 45: by Val (new)

Val H. | 21803 comments Tonight's result:

Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Carlton Blues (RedJohn)
7.2.44 (Q1) 2.1.13
11.3.69 (Q2) 3.5.23
14.5.89 (Q3) 8.7.55
16.9.105 (Q3) 12.9.81

It was a rather uninspiring game - no atmosphere and the Tigers were dominant from the bounce. Hope the remaining games are more exciting. Perhaps I just need to get used to the empty stadiums.

Tech is our first up winner - Tigers by 23. $6.00 goes to Oscar's Law. Well done!!

message 46: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments probably have been better to postpone/cancel, but...........yay!

message 47: by Val (new)

Val H. | 21803 comments "The AFL will be suspended for 30 days if any player tests positive."

message 48: by Val (new)

Val H. | 21803 comments Tonight's result:

Western Bulldogs (Blastro) v Collingwood Magpies (tech)
1.0.6 (Q1) 5.2.32
4.0.24 (Q2) 8.6.54
5.2.32 (Q3) 10.7.67
5.4.34 (Q4) 13.8.86

Still no atmosphere. The score flatters the Dogs.

message 49: by Val (new)

Val H. | 21803 comments Today's/Tonight's results:

Essendon Bombers (Val) v Fremantle Dockers (unwanted)
5.2.32 (Q1) 2.1.13
7.5.47 (Q2) 3.3.21
8.8.56 (Q3) 4.6.30
9.9.63 (Q4) 8.9.57

Adelaide Crows (Dean) v Sydney Swans (Anita)
6.0.36 (Q1) 3.0.18
7.1.43 (Q2) 8.3.51
9.2.56 (Q3) 11.4.70
11.5.71 (Q4) 11.8.74

Greater Western Sydney Giants (Duke) v Geelong Cats (unwanted)
5.0.30 (Q1) 4.2.26
9.1.55 (Q2) 6.6.42
13.3.81 (Q3) 8.7.55
17.3.105 (Q4) 11.7.73

Gold Coast Suns (Suzy) v Port Adelaide Power (Grizzly)
1.1.7 (Q1) 4.2.26
3.2.20 (Q2) 9.6.60
4.5.29 (Q3) 9.9.63
4.5.29 (Q4) 10.16.76

The two games this afternoon proved quite exciting. Essendon got off to a flyer but couldn't seem to shake Freo off for the rest of the day. They led by 26 points for most of the game but Freo came home with a wet sail (I've never really understood that expression) and it was nip and tuck until the final whistle.

Likewise Adelaide started really well and looked likely winners but the Swans fought back to take a good lead. And just when you thought it was all over, Adelaide came back and Tex Walker had the chance of a last minute goal to take the lead, but it went behind for a point.

I didn't see either of tonight's games. It looks like the Giants were deadly accurate, but don't write off Geelong just yet. Whereto the Suns? That scoreline looks awful.

Well done Nick - 6 from 6 going into tomorrow.

message 50: by Val (new)

Val H. | 21803 comments Season 2020 now officially postponed until May 31. The AFL say they will reassess the situation at the end of April. The AFLW (Women's comp which is currently playing finals) will also cease after today's game.
