Val H. | 21814 comments My tips:

My tips:

Pies x 7 (Tigers without their No.1 ruckman, Pies have Brodie Grundy - end of story)
Cats (Cats at Kardinia Park? End of story)
Lions (at home, Freo stuck in a "hub", crowd of 1000 will surely all be barracking for the Lions - end of story)
Dees (by no means end of story here. I think the Blues are a better side but fact is, Melbourne just HAVE to win to keep any sort of credibility with their fans)
Port (no brainer; Crows, as a club, are in complete disarray)
Eagles (I'd love to see the Suns stick it up everyone who dismisses them but against the Eagles??? End of story)
Giants (again, I want North to have a good season but the Giants just have too much talent and they're at home)
Dons (Swans should be favourites at home but the Dons could just sneak past them)
Saints (not bad side on paper and the Dogs didn't impress way back in Round 1 - going for the upset)

Hope RedJohn and Sussex make it to the party!!

It's going to be all razz-a-ma-tazz tonight! Canned crowd noise provided by the soundtrack from when these teams have met previously; virtual crowds; Zoom-style technology will create a megawall of fans at home (a la Brady Bunch intro); Pies will have cardboard cut-outs of fans behind the goals (if they have one of tech that's sure to put the Tigers off scoring), Tigers will have signs over the seats; at least one boundary rider will be at each game - but most of all, footy's back! As it says in today's paper : Jordan De Goey or Dustin Martin streaming out of the middle with the ball in hand and scores tight late in the match will supersede all gimmicks already mentioned.

Craig White | 6727 comments the breath-taking beauty of such an image would indeed be a distraction for those less gifted (i.e. everybody!) in the looks dept! a whole stadium full of cardboard cut-outs of me? a dream, of course, but overwhelming for those not used to being in the presence of such awesome and dazzling sculpted perfection!

Val H. | 21814 comments Oi, Sussex, come back here! Can't figure out who you are selecting for this game:

Port Adelaide v Adelaide Crows (in Adelaide)

You appear to have tipped the Bombers, except that they're playing later in the round against the Swans who you have tipped.

theDuke | 6447 comments I think he's looked at the old schedule at it was before the lockdown Val. I initially did that myself..then realised it's all changed to suit current circumstances. Some of the online sites, like footyforecaster, haven't been updated to the new schedule yet.

Lez | 7490 comments I've sent an urgent message to Sussex then realised it wasn't urgent at all!

message 110: by Val (new)

Val H. | 21814 comments Well, after a really exciting start and with the fake crowd noise giving a sense of atmosphere, the game sort of fizzled out when it became apparent that even with shortened quarters, the players are lacking match conditioning.

Collingwood Magpies (tech) v Richmond Tigers (Philip)
4.1.25 (Q1) 0.1.1
5.3.33 (Q2) 3.1.19
5.4.34 (Q3) 5.2.32
5.6.36 (Q4) 5.6.36

I don't think I've ever had to deal with a draw in the first game of the round, but I need to be able to differentiate scores so I'm taking the base line score as zero and while everyone will be credited with a win, Grizzly wins the $6 on offer for his charity, Red Nose, as his tip of a 4 point margin was closest to the pin. Well done!

Low scoring game though. Val, you mentioned that the quarters have been shortened. I missed this match, so how long are these revised games now, Val?

Oh..and er..congrats Grizzly!

Val H. | 21814 comments Duke:

These are some of the changes for the 2020 season. Some will remain till the end of the year. Others could change any day.

Here's eight things you need to know about the season restart …

Q : How many games are left in the season?
A : The AFL made the call in March to bring the season back to 17 matches per club. With one round completed, each club has 16 games left. A traditional finals series will take place with eight teams competing three weeks, plus a Grand Final (with no GF date locked in yet). It is likely there will be no pre-finals bye like there has been in recent seasons.

Q : How long will the quarters run?
A : Just like round one, each quarter will be 16 minutes plus time-on. This is a reduction on last year's 20 minutes plus time-on. The new rule will be in place for the remainder of 2020 plus finals, but is expected to revert back to normal in 2021.

Q : How many players will be on the bench?
A : While the AFL toyed with the idea of having extra players on the bench, each team will be allowed the normal four interchange players and 90 rotations per game.

Q : Who can attend matches?
A : The South Australian government has given clearance for 2240 people to attend Saturday night's Showdown between Adelaide and Port Adelaide. It will be split between club members, corporates and Adelaide Oval members. Greater Western Sydney and Sydney have been granted 350 people for respective matches against North Melbourne and Essendon on Sunday. Fans in Victoria and Queensland will need to wait. Media are allowed to sit in assigned media areas but no media members - except one broadcast boundary rider and camera staff - are allowed on the ground.

Q : How many club staff members are allowed at games?
A : Each club is allowed 30 staff members to attend matches and be in the inner-sanctum with players. There will be a maximum of eight people allowed in the coach's box and 12 on the interchange bench, in addition to players. The remaining staff will be in the change rooms. Club board members have been given an invitation to attend matches and sit in corporate boxes.

Q : What happens to the players not playing?
A : AFL-listed players have been told they can't play at state league level in 2020 to avoid coming into contact with COVID-19 from someone outside the AFL bubble. Instead, clubs will be able to schedule scratch matches against one another for those overlooked for AFL selection. It will be up to competing clubs to organise matches and they will vary in length and the number of players used – often with less than 18 players per side. There are six scratch matches scheduled for this weekend.

Q : When will the next block of matches be released?
A : Last month the AFL released the fixture for rounds 2-5. After round three, the AFL is expected to announce the matches scheduled for rounds 6-7. It is expected a Thursday-Sunday round structure will remain.

Q : How long will the WA and SA clubs be in the hubs?
A : As it sits, Fremantle and West Coast will spend four weeks inside the Gold Coast quarantine hub for rounds 2-5 before a decision is made ahead of the next fixture release. After Saturday night's Showdown between Adelaide and Port Adelaide, both clubs will head to the Gold Coast for at least three matches in rounds 3-5.

Thanks for that Val. Quite a big change for this year then. Gunna be difficult to manage all that, plus no income from the supporters either. A problem repeated in just about all other sports the world over, no doubt.

I have! They told me to be patient! It's now been well over 8 weeks, since it was posted, and it's still in Melbourne! Weirdly though, I 've received two other orders from the same label, that were posted around the same time, both taking about 7 weeks to arrive, approx. 3 weeks longer than normal. But this one seems to have got stuck in the system!

Val H. | 21814 comments theDuke wrote: "Thanks for that Val. Quite a big change for this year then. Gunna be difficult to manage all that, plus no income from the supporters either. A problem repeated in just about all other sports the world over, no doubt. ..."

The AFL seem to have managed things quite well, especially by following all Government advice. Some newspaper reports:

June 3
"The AFL's six MCG tenant clubs have landed a multi-million-dollar windfall under a COVID-19 emergency deal struck between Australian Rules football and its premier stadium. Collingwood, Melbourne, Richmond, Hawthorn, Carlton and Essendon will each receive home game payments estimated at between $150,000 and $200,000 per match for the remainder of the shortened season. the unforeseen cash boost was in part a goodwill gesture from the stadium in tough times and one that underlined the spirit of the long-term agreement with the AFL and the MCG, which now runs until 2057. Under the complex new arrangement the AFL will pay the MCG a significantly reduced ground management fee and the stadium in turn will forward the majority of that fee – about $6 million – to the home clubs."

4 June
"Tenant clubs at Marvel Stadium expect to receive home game payments in 2020 on terms similar to that struck between the AFL, the MCG and their tenant clubs. St Kilda, the Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Essendon and Carlton have deals to play home games at Marvel Stadium, with their contractual arrangements entitling them to receive revenue for home games played at the venue."

The AFL owns Marvel Stadium and I believe this deal has been concluded and the amount per home game exceeds the deal that the MCG is giving ($250,000 per game?).

Most clubs would have received membership fees prior to Round 1. While fans had the option of requesting a refund or credit, I suspect most chose to donate their 2020 subs.

June 10
"The AFL has signed a significantly reduced broadcast agreement with the Seven Network and Foxtel. The deal with the AFL's free-to-air partner, Seven, is worth $730 million and extends the current five-year deal by two years until the end of 2024, at an annual rate of $146 million. This is a saving of around 19 per cent to the Seven Network. It is the first time since 1971 that the AFL has signed a reduced broadcast agreement. The benefits of a free-to-air TV deal were apparent last night when the season relaunch — a drawn match between Richmond and Collingwood — drew 1.28 million viewers, making it the highest-rating Thursday night football match. The AFL's other broadcast partner, pay TV provider Foxtel, has also agreed to an undisclosed deal but not the two-year extension."

Also, in an agreement struck with the Players Association, players took a 50% pay cut for the 2020 season. And back in March, the AFL was able to secure bank loans with their ownership of Marvel Stadium as security:

"The AFL has secured a line of credit with two major banks that will allow the league to continue operating during the coronavirus pandemic. The deal came a week after the AFL and all of its clubs were forced to stand down about 80 per cent of staff in the face of the biggest financial crisis to hit the sport. The total amount derived from the AFL loans given by NAB and ANZ is reportedly more than $500 million."

So they've managed a crisis situation pretty well. And crowds will be back:

June 12
"Up to 10,000 football fans will be able to attend matches at select stadiums from July, as COVID-19 restrictions continue to be eased, although the changes won't apply to stadiums with a capacity greater than 40,000. The crowd maximum is based on filling 25 per cent of a sports venue's capacity. However, state premiers will have the final say on whether the new rules will apply to them and the potential of accommodating fans at larger stadiums. The Prime Minister's announcement comes on the same day South Australian Premier Steven Marshall revealed his state's borders would reopen from July 20, in a major development for the AFL. Under the PM's guidelines, venues such as Geelong's GMHBA Stadium, Giants Stadium and Gold Coast's Metricon Stadium would be able to welcome thousands of supporters to games from July."

8.2.50 (Q2) 7.3.45
11.5.71 (Q3) 8.5.53
12.9.81 (Q4) 10.9.69

Carlton Blues (RedJohn) v Melbourne Demons (TheFoe)

2.5.17 (Q2) 7.4.46
4.6.30 (Q3) 8.5.53
7.11.53(Q4) 8.6.54

Port Adelaide Power (Grizzly) v Adelaide Crows (Dean)
4.2.26 (Q1) 2.1.13
8.4.52 (Q2) 3.2.20
14.7.91 (Q3) 4.3.27
17.8.110 (Q4) 5.5.35

Gold Coast Suns (Suzy) v West Coast Eagles (Sussex)
2.0.12 (Q1) 1.4.10
6.2.38 (Q2) 5.5.35
11.4.70 (Q3) 6.8.44
14.6.90 (Q4) 6.10.46

Great to see the Suns go on with it. I really thought it was all over at half time. The Dees were very lucky to sneak home by a point. Just shows how important it is to get off to a good first quarter. Port looked in great shape and the Lions showed consistent form. Some tipsters looking rather smart; others not so much.

Val H. | 21814 comments Never mind John - we all have those senior moments. There's always next week.

Today's results:

Greater Western Sydney Giants (Duke) v North Melbourne Kangaroos (Steve)
1.4.10 (Q1) 1.2.8
2.6.18 (Q2) 2.6.18
5.10.40 (Q3) 6.8.44
8.12.60 (Q4) 12.8.80

Sydney Swans (Anita) v Essendon Bombers (Val)
2.0.12 (Q1) 5.2.32
5.3.33 (Q2) 6.3.39
9.4.58 (Q3) 10.6.66
11.7.73 (Q4) 12.7.79

St Kilda Saints (Lez) v Western Bulldogs (Blastro)
3.1.19 (Q1) 2.4.16
7.3.45 (Q2) 3.4.22
12.4.76 (Q3) 5.6.36
14.4.88 (Q4) 7.7.49

More excitement! The Roos looked done for most of the game but never gave up and came home well. Essendon again proved the importance of an early lead. Sydney threw everything at them but the Bombers managed to hang on. I didn't see anything of the late game but the result looks quite convincing.

I have read online that the Roos could be the team to watch out for this year....so perraps not a surprise they'd beat last year's runner uppers!

I get the feeling the long layup, is gunna catch out some of the teams..so i'm now expecting we'll be seeing a lot surprising results this season.
