I've just read the chapters for the coming week as I'm now listening on audio so have to fit in when I can. I'm liking the story more now we are into it and I feel like it depicts how long these men and women would be travelling from place to place and the dangers that they face. It is nice now we are getting to know the characters a little better and their personalities are settling in. Gus is my favourite character I like his humour. I'm still not sure that westerns are for me but I'm pleased I'm reading it and don't feel dread to pick it up each week.

Trudie (trudieb) Quite a few exciting things happen in this section ! I don't think I am ever going to get the imagery of the (view spoiler) . However, a little research on this tells me it is not really something that can happen in that way - thank goodness.

I was a little disappointed to have to go and meet an entire new set of characters in this section as I didn't find them as compelling as the Hat Creek Outfit. But as the story progresses they start to evolve and merge better into the story.

Phil On The Hill (philonthehillexon) | 13 comments Almost done for this week. Must say very pleased to be reading this. Don't think I would ever have tried it given its size. Thank you.

Nats | 4 comments Just done with this weeks section my favourite section so far. I love how we are beginning to know the characters more and I am really enjoying being on a journey with them. Looking forward to the next chapters which I plan to complete at the weekend.

Helene Jeppesen | 6 comments I just finished the chapter on Louisa Brooke - what a chapter! :-D

message 7: by Janet (new)

Janet (swirlygirlyreads) I am absolutely loving this book! I really enjoyed the introduction of the new characters in this section. I particularly like Deputy Sheriff Roscoe, who I feel adds a little comedy and light relief to the book. I was totally shocked by the event at the river that led to Sean's death! I ended up going down the rabbit hole looking up about water moccassins and cottonmouths snakes. I think the characters jump off the page in this book as does the heat, the dust and the danger. I think although I would really not want to join in with the journey to Montana, I would definitely head north for cooler greener land. I can't wait to read the next section.

Elena (Elemar Books) (elemarbooks) Just finished this week's section. I'm really enjoying this book so far. I'm excited to see what's next.

☘ Erin K ☘ I had been reading this but I had also put in a request for the audiobook from my library. The loan just came through yesterday so I can now read it and/or listen to it, so that should make it go faster since I can listen to it in the car on my commute to work. I'm at chapter 35 right now.

I like the length of the chapters in this book. With a long book, if the chapters are also really long, you sometimes feel like you're not getting anywhere and also makes it hard to find a place to stop. This has chapters that are just the right length though. I feel like I'm moving right along and making good progress in the book.

message 10: by Kay (new)

Kay I was also first annoyed at the introduction of new characters but they have grown on me. There is more character development as the book progresses, which is my style of story, making this book even more enjoyable. Gus continues to be my favorite character. The descriptions are really well done.

Louisa was certainly an interesting character! I'm sure Roscoe thought so too!

I agree Deputy Sheriff Roscoe is my favourite character of this section. I love thinking about all of the different journey's that are taking place at the moment and speculating how all of the characters are likely to meet up.

message 13: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid | 13 comments Ok now this is really getting good! I love that there are many women joining the story and hearing their voices. I'm very impressed how McMurtry is making their story rich as well as the men. And I can relate how times change and how generations literally forget the glory of the past that is only 20 years ago whether it's 1890 or 2018.

Just finished reading this weeks chapters. Now going to go straight into week 4. But I quite enjoyed reading about the new characters and I am enjoying their story line. Sean's death was definitely a sad point in these chapters.

I'm enjoying that there are more women in the story too Ingrid. I definitely agree that McMurtry has a way of making all of their lives rich, and I enjoy learning about each characters back story. I feel like we are really getting into the adventure aspect now of the story and I'm looking forward to reading the next chapters.

message 15: by Mely (new)

Mely (mneg) I'm a little behind due to a busy schedule last week. Trying to catch up with the rest of this section and at least start week 4. I had a little trouble getting into the first 200 pages of the book so I watched a bit of the miniseries just to put everything in perspective and I'm sure glad I did. I'm a little more fond of the characters now and I'm a little less confused on the storyline. I just wanted to throw out that tidbit of information for any of you who were little distracted as I was. I stopped watching the miniseries at the part where Elmira gets the whiskey boat so not as to spoil my reading.... hahaha. They definitely played up Roscoe's character in the miniseries.

Elizabeth Meadows (lizziefaye) | 10 comments Hi everybody, I got sidetracked last week with another audio book for a book club, so I just listened to section 3 yesterday. I agree that the introduction of more females spices things up a bit. Louisa!!! Oh my goodness!
I was quite disturbed though at Roscoe for not doing something to help Janey when he was at Old Sam's house. Maybe he didn't realize how young she was until later when she followed him. But he even acknowledged that he knew something was wrong when Sam said she was bought and paid for. He is a lawman for goodness sake! He should have done something. Ugh! Talk about a classic case of sticking your head in the sand and not wanting to get involved. At least she had the gumption to follow him out and I hope that things will get better for her. Roscoe doesn't seem too bright though.

message 17: by ☘ Erin K ☘ (new)

☘ Erin K ☘ Agreed - I don't think Roscoe is the sharpest tool in the shed!

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Swann I finished this section a few days ago and moving on to week 4 now. Loving the story! The way he has written it really brings this to life. I felt like I was there and was so nervous during the storm along with them. Who knew a thunderstorm could be so terrifying! Poor Sean, that was so sad. And Roscoe, while I do enjoy his character...come on dude. Walking away from Janey when she clearly needs help....ugh! Hopefully he will redeem himself there.

message 19: by Berna (new)

Berna I finished the story in time but forgot to write here :)
After thre weeks, I decided that my favorite character is Captain Call but I also like Augustus, Newt and Joe. I am also fond of many characters. I despise Jake and do not like Ellie.
What I most like about this book is that the descriptions are detailed but not boring which is actually rare in books.
