Around the Year in 52 Books discussion

Welcome!

We'll read (more or less) one book each week, all along the year. You can't change the topics, but you're free to choose whatever book you're interested in for each category.

It's better if you create your own plan (using "create a new topic" and choosing "2018 Plans" for the folder) so you can keep track of your progress and share your choices with the other members. If you need help to find ideas, you can have a look at the weekly topics.

You can read in order or jump around, but keep this order in the plan, as we are using the numbers to find quickly a topic.

If you can't complete the challenge, it's not a problem. If one topic is really too much out of your comfort zone or too much difficult to fulfill, you can use the Wild Card and read something else for this week (reader's choice or past suggestions).

For those four weeks, you choose 4 different books that are all linked by the elements. For Week 4, you read a book that has Earth in the title, on the cover, related to the author or the main characters or the theme. For Week 14, you read a book that has Fire in the title, on the cover, related to the author or the main characters or the theme. Same for Week 28 with Water and Week 46 with Air.

Aren't Q 42 and 28 somewhat the same Thing?

And: would you mind me to join if only part of the books I read are in English (I am German), some in German, some in French?
I will translate titles litarally + give the title if translated already where needed to specify the task has been covered...I sincerely have to read some of the books waiting for me ;-)

You can have books in whatever language you want (I used some French books in my plans these past years). If you give the English titles, it'll help people recognize the books, so it's always nicer if you want to discuss your reads :)

Good idea. Hm. I already read "Exit West","The Hate U Give" and "The Keeper of lost Things" and really liked each of them a lot. But this topic will definitely not help to reduce my tbr pile ;-)

I have a question on 15: book with an unique format/writing structure
Would a book count that has a different chapter writing by different Author's , because my sister just got me Inherit the Dead, and though out the book each part of the story is wrote by a different author,

Yes, I would say it is quite unique to have so many authors collaborating on a single story.

For #4, the element is Earth. Does World count for this, as in Brave New World?

In Brave New World, World is for society not planet, so I wouldn't count it. Other books with the 2nd meaning could count I suppose.

Thank you! I'm trying to use books that I own, and this is the only element I don't have. World was as close as I got, lol. I'll just have to go to the library ;)

Number 33 - a lot of the words are in fact phrases e.g. meter maid do you have to use meter maid or just meter or maid

The intent is to use the full expression, but if you find nothing that fits and use only 1 word, we won't bother you ;)

Yes Ruth, you're supposed to choose one of the prompts listed and choose a book that fits in it. They are classified by polls, because that's how we organised the making of the 2018 list, but just look at the prompts and choose one you like.

I have an interesting one. I have a book that's a choose your own adventure. How do I know when I have finished the book. Is it just when I have finished the adventure I chose or not?

If you complete the story once, it should count as "read". Just try to not die in the first 10 pages :p

You're not a dunce at all! :) How you do the challenge is entirely up to you. There are a lot of people who go in order and try to read a book a week (give or take), so you would read a book with a text-only cover (prompt #26) in the 26th week of 2018. From what I understand, there are also a lot of people who just read in any order they want, and that's okay, too. If I recall correctly, they do ask that you keep the prompts numbered the way they have them in the list, if you're keeping a list here on 카지노싸이트. That way, everyone is still on the same page in discussions, etc., even though you can read your list straight through, or pick & choose what you're going to read when.

They only have to be linked by the element. The books themselves can be part of a series, or you can do completely different authors, different genres, fiction/non-fiction, whatever you want to do. :)

On 4 books linked by the 4 elements: Book #1 Earth (in title, cover, content, setting, author...) Do you mean that they have to be in a series? Or can they be individual books?

They are linked by elements only. You can pick whatever book with water on the cover, then a 2nd book with air in the title, a 3rd book about a firefighter and a 4th book by an author named Land :)

Question: Can 1 book fulfill more than 1 week's challenge? If I read, say, a book originally written in a foreign language, with a location in its title, and which a friend has rated 5 stars ...

The spirit of the challenge is to read 52 books, so one book should fit one slot. BUT we are really open in the way any of you want to do the challenge, so if you still want to complete the 52 but give yourself the liberty to double or triple count a book, feel free to do it.

Some members know they won't be able to read 52 books, so instead of counting one book for several prompts, they just select their 20 or 30 favourite prompts and use that as their challenge.

For anyone that uses Habitica, I created a challenge for this if you want to use Habitica to track your progress.

Michele, what it means by "born", is that the words on the list came into existence/usage in that particular year. So yes, you choose a word from the list from your birth year and find a book connected to it.

Can’t wait to get started but first I need to finish 2017! 4 books to go in such little time.
