At least, I've got my obsession out (spent last night and most of today putting this together) LOL
I really don't need another challenge either but... when you're obsessed, you just can't help yourself!

@Dee, we're rolling 1 dice - I just can't link it to just 1 dice, I tried and it worked once but the second time, the link reverted to the home page of the dice roller.
@LynnB, do you mean if you can crossover books with the bday games? yes, you can - this is a separate game altogether :) And I see that you've read your first book already! Woo hoo!
@Ebony, great choice for your first book :) That was fun to read. I hoped you like Palace Walk too -this was such cultural shock for me.

Well, I messed it up again. I didn't realize it was just one die. I've just been rolling from your link (which is two dice-- and explains why my first roll was a 7). I'll go back and re-roll, except for the first 7 (already read the book).
LOL - I was trying to be discrete ha ha ha
I'm glad to see that the link seems to be working better now, yay!

You have got to be the most creative challenge person ever, Tien. I am going to skip this one (at least for now) as I have too many things going and am pretty sure I would not beat Nellie's record.

You can start anytime you like, Lyn, should you feel the niggling push ;)

I feel I did my penance anyway because that first roll series made me read a romance LOL!

I do, I do....I am thinking January. December is horrible for me and I don't think I will even finish one book. ;(

Re-reading. I may jump in sooner than I planned. No will power. :)

published during a specific year - you could use the goodreads popular books, or do a generic google search for books published XXXX (being the year) - for translated books...soo many choices - lots of stuff from the scandinavian countries - all oing to depend on what you like
@Susan: I've just been to your bookshelves to check out your books :)
For your 'Shelf Setting' - tick 'date pub' then sort (desc) - it will usually show you the first publication year and I saw that you have a range of books published in Bly's lifetime.
With translated work, you had some books on your shelf too! Gabriel Garcia Marquez & Arturo Perez-Reverte wrote in Spanish whilst Haruki Murakami wrote in Japanese. I believe you'd be reading their books in English?
And of course, as per Dee's comments (scandinavian countries) - Stieg Larsson wrote in Swedish and there seems to be a lot of scandinavian crime novels these days ;)

Of course Not, Dee! I've just started my 6th book which allows me to plan my second stage ;)
You read a lot faster and a lot more than I do but you're probably concentrating your effort on the Seasonal Challenge whilst I try to fit these books onto the Seasonal challenge and it's working so far though it's all over the place!

Square 27 - Lose Next Throw

I have lots of good African books, but few set in Egypt. I just read Anatomy of a Disappearance: A Novel which is set in Egypt and some European countries. It was good (not excellent, but good).
@LynnB - "We plan itineraries to travel, so you may plan your readings ahead BUT only up to the point where you lose throw/s as there is always a bit of uncertainties with travel. When you start to read for your lose throw/s, you may roll again and plan the next stage of your ‘travel’ up to the lose throw/s again. Then repeat above steps."
Erm, I wasn't checking your 'itinerary' but it looks like you should be on the 4th or 5th stage of travel, lol

@Dee - books set in Egypt:
River God by Wilbur Smith
(I actually started reading the sequel for this for my 'book set in Egypt' but it's not actually set in Egypt! *@*@#* so I ended up reading:
Death Comes as The End by Agatha Christie
Some other suggestions:
The Egyptologist: A Novel
Palace Walk
Every Last Kiss -YA/time travel ()

Actually, I thought a stage was determined by when you lost a turn. That was the end of the previous stage of travel/throws.
So far I am still working on my first book. Slow start.

I think that's right, Bea. @Tien - You are just too detailed for me :) Think I have to study these plans more thoroughly before I get going on them! I seem to have made a mess on this one, lol! I do enjoy all these games, though.

I’ve just finished reading Eighty Days:Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History-Making Race Around the World yesterday and was totally inspired by the ladies and since I saw a boardgame was developed in relation to Nellie Bly’s travel around the world, what else popped into my head but a reading challenge?!
I am guessing that I might be the only one excited but hoping this excitement is contagious ;)
I’ve not written a review for the book yet. I’ve only finished reading it yesterday and got carried away writing up this challenge. Nevertheless, review will not be published til closer to publication date (Feb 2013). Suffice to say, it was an enjoyable read about 2 inspiring ladies with many historical anecdotes in between, the 19th century was brought to life in this narrative non-fiction work (4 stars from me).
If you are curious, you can check out Nellie Bly’s entry on Wikipedia.
For this challenge, I’ve tried to relate some events to the tasks on the day / square however as the book does not specify day by day, I’ve also included some bits about Nellie Bly and incorporate tasks that way.
Note: The boardgame seems to have taken some liberties as I found events are quite as per the book, dates being a little bit off etc but don’t worry too much about this aspect as we’re here to have fun.
Rules of the Challenge:
The challenge is to beat Nellie Bly’s record of 72 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes and 14 seconds. So, the time will start ticking when you roll your first dice.
Everyone starts at Day 1 (New York Harbor –Departure Point)
Random.org provides a timestamp for each roll, so be sure to record your first roll’s timestamp, exactly as shown on the site, just underneath your dice, like this:
Timestamp: 2012-11-28 23:40:11 UTC
Move the number of squares as indicated by your die rolls.
When you first landed on a square, follow the “Task on Board” however if you landed on that square again (2nd or 3rd etc), follow “Challenge Task”. It is, therefore, important for you to record which squares you have landed on.
If there is NO “Task on Board”, do the “Challenge Task” for that square.
If there is NO “Challenge Task”, do the “Task on Board” for that square (even if it is your second / third visit to this square).
Books must be read in order of the rolls. You can read 2 books at the same time but the books must be in consecutive order. For example, you're reading Book B and Book C. If you've finished Book C first, you can't read Book D until you have finished Book B.
We plan itineraries to travel, so you may plan your readings ahead BUT only up to the point where you lose throw/s as there is always a bit of uncertainties with travel. When you start to read for your lose throw/s, you may roll again and plan the next stage of your ‘travel’ up to the lose throw/s again. Then repeat above steps.
Lose next / x throw = Stay where you are and read x book/s of your choice. For example, if you lose 2 throws, you read 2 books of your choice
IF a task refers to word in title of books, we are discounting any subtitle / series name.
If you’re planning ahead –please update your post when you’ve read your book. BUT, if your travel is delayed (lose throw/s), please advised of your next stage of travel in a new post.
FINISH LINE = You have finished as soon as you landed on the last square. Record the roll which brings you to the last square however to complete the tour, just roll a die (the result doesn't matter, we're just after the timestamp) right after you finished reading your last book for this challenge. Post your final timestamp as a new comment so I'll receive a notification as well :)
