I like it because it's funny and yet it's not just fluff, it's actually quite thought provoking and even touching at times. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
I had to laugh at Mama's system for diseases. It sure sounds like cruel and inhumane punishment to me! I had heard of people doing this for the Chicken Pox, but I didn't know that they did this for the Mumps and Measels too. Sure am glad we have vaccinations for these diseases now!
One of the things that I like about this book is that sometimes it's hard to tell if Tom is a good kid or a bad kid. He is most definitely an extremely bright 10 year old boy and sometimes he uses his "Great Brain" to help people, but does he only do it for a financial prophet or is he really a kid with a Great Brain and a big heart? I like that Tom's character doesn't fit into the usual "good guy" mold or "bad guy" mold because real people don't fit into these molds anyway. Also, giving the hero weaknesses makes it even more thought provoking.
Making each chapter a separate short story makes it perfect if you want to read it aloud to your kids because you can read a chapter and then discuss it, then go onto the next one.
I also got a kick out of the way that he ended the book. The book ended with Tom's great reformation, it leaves you with the idea that Tom has completely changed and that things get really dull, "so dull that there is no more to tell." But he went on to write several more books!?!...more

I think it would make a great read aloud. Ida Early is referred to as a "mountain Mary Poppins", but I see her more as a Calamity Jane kind of person. One of the reasons that I liked the book was because I felt like I could relate to Ida. She is a socially awkward person and since all of us have some social anxieties in one form or another, Ida is a character all of us can identify with or at least sympathize for.
I understand that there are more of these "Ida books". I'd be interested in finding out if the others are as good as the first. ...more

The setting is 1925, a time when education wasn't as important as farm chores, especially for girls. I love stories about spunky young ladies and I love stories about people who value education, so this book is a good combination. It doesn't hurt that the book was written by one of my favorite authors.

I would have given the book a two or a three star rating except it has one major flaw that I wasn't able to overlook. The main character, a 6th graderI would have given the book a two or a three star rating except it has one major flaw that I wasn't able to overlook. The main character, a 6th grader named Greg, is selfish, dishonest, and disloyal to his friends and family. All through the entire book every time something goes wrong he blames everyone around him, he never learns to accept responsiblity for his actions. I understand that this is completely normal for a 6th grader to behave this way, but as a mother, I don't want to encourage this behavior. I think that when we as adults (parents, teachers, librarians)make these kind of books available to kids, we unwittingly send them the message that it's ok to act like this.
I understand that this is supposed to be humorous and that many will say that I need to lighten up, but as a mother of three teenagers, I don't see it as funny, I just think it's sad. ...more

I've been reading this series to my ten year old son and I think that I am enjoying it just as much as he is. He loves adventure stories and he loves animals so this series seems to be perfect for him. The only thing that he didn't like in this book was the romance, it was a little too sappy for him.
