While this classic early sci-fi story is plot and action driven, it is well written and interesting because of the character of John Carter. The narrator, Scott Brick, brings this story to life! If you have seen the movie, John Carter, you will be familiar with the story.

Robbie and Azure, 2 small 11 year old girls with a chance to go to Lattertop Academy, are best friends; one wants to attend and the other does not.
I enjoyed this very short audiobook (just 2 disks) even though it was read like a play with different voices and sound effects.
I found it somewhat annoying that it ended with a cliffhanger; other than that it was very interesting....more

I wonder what Freud would say about the explosion of this genre. Maybe deep in our subconscious we fear that we are leaving the rising generation a damaged world and we are hoping the good in young people will be able to right the wrongs previous generations have allowed to multiply.
I thought the beginning was a little slow, but as our hero begins to take action, it improves.
I liked that the characters adapted the English language with some expressive words that eliminate the need for profanity. If you have ever read A Clockwork Orange, you will know what I am talking about.

After the deaths of her parents, she remained with her village until a strange disease kills everyone except Abby.
The year is 2088; Abby leaves the village and learns that her grandfather has left a message for her to reintroduce Americans to Christianity as there are few believers left in the U.S.
Abby had loved her missionary life in the jungle, but she accepts her grandfather's challenge although she faces derision and persecution.
If all science fiction and mystery could be written more about human ideals (as this one is) and less about cool weapons, I would become a big fan!
Interesting ideas about eternal life VS living forever.
While characters do discuss religion, this book does not come off as preachy or sappy.

Rigg meets other interesting characters in this other world they inhabit and they go on a journey. It was a fun journey for me!
I am not a big fan of time travel in books because it is impossible, so I just reject the premise and the entire book from the beginning. However, even though the author went into a little more detail than I needed about how this time travel ability actually works in the world created by Orson Scott Card, I actually liked this story!
This would be a good audiobook for a family trip for kids over 10 or 11. More of a boy than girl book.

If you would like a PG rated Lost (), you will like this. The plot is different, but you will notice some similarities starting with the names and an airplane!
Margaret Peterson Haddix is a prolific writer who knows how to draw a young reader into her stories and make them want more. That is a good thing because this book is the first in a series.

My 4 year old A scientist experiments and turns himself into a gigantic lizard (still wearing shirt and pants.) The X-Men are called in to the rescue. My 4 year old grandson found this while we were looking for a Hulk graphic novel in the teen section of the library. He was impressed with all of the illustrations of the lizardman. He confused the storyline with the Hulk a few times while we were reading it and discussing it. There are some obvious similarities. I think AJ would have rated this book higher than I did....more

Cowboys and Aliens...it was a movie first, then they make it into a book, ah-h-h. The county library had the audiobook available for download, so I did.
The premise is actually kind of interesting to think about. What would happen if some aliens (I don't mean the illegal kind) came down and attacked some cowboy town and abducted a few of the folk?
If that happened in present time, the lucky abducted victim would think, "Oh yeah, I heard about this, but I didn't believe it. Guess I was wrong!"
What do the cowboys think? Demons have come for them!
I could follow all of the action, but I didn't really care what happened to the characters. Even with the attack of the "demons" I felt no fear, no empathy. No need to keep reading.
Maybe when the movie comes on TV it will be worth a try....more

I didn't have the graphic novel version, but if I did, I would know that a boov (what they call the aliens) looks like this:
The boov that befriends Tip reminded me of Jar Jar Binks. The kids are amused by him and the adults aren't. After trying to get past my annoyance of the boov, I decided to shelve this book. I think I would have really enjoyed this book when I was 10, so I don't want to rate it. But I don't want to read it, or listen to the audiobook.
J.Lo can't sell Tip on the idea, but maybe he can sell you on this book:

A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop: the Twilight Zone!
You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... the Twilight Zone.
There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call "The Twilight Zone".
As I picked up this 5 cd set audio book at the library, I had a walk down memory lane. My dad, brothers, and I loved watching this (and The Outer Limits) when I was about 6 years old. My mom thought it was too creepy for children--and that made it even more exciting!
These 5 stories were more thought provoking than scary--and in some cases, a little over acted. I almost wanted to laugh out loud during one of the stories. I thought the best story was about a gun fighter that lost it and became a drunk only to have something happen that brought about another change. I really like novels that are about change, what makes people change, and how they handle it.

I do not believe time travel will ever be possible, and have a hard time buying into it even in fiction. I found it distracting to go back and forth in time during the story. This book could not hold a candle to Mildred Taylor's books (Roll of Thunder, The Land, etc.) or The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. I decided to put this book aside without finishing it and get on with Atlas Shrugged--an excellent, but long book!...more
