I really, really enjoyed I am Legend. The battle for survival is an extremely scary thought for me, because I am a big chicken who completely loses her head in emergency situations (great for a former 911 dispatcher, huh?). How Robert survived, and his drive to just get through the days was really enjoyable to read.
The explanation of vampire mythology was especially enjoyable. Why the hell WOULD vampires freak about garlic? And the cross/religious aspect was especially enjoyable.
This story, along with the short stories, are very Twilight Zone. Made me enjoy them all the more. The ending was especially good....more

The storyline is really interesting, and the attempted graphing of future relationships reminded me of Numb3rs for the teen set. Also, it was funny as hell. I cracked up quite a lot in my car listening to this.
The ending was lacking, though. I don't know why, I just expected something...more. I also was hoping for the story of each Katherine spread out through the book itself, as opposed to lump summed at the end. I do understand why it was done that way, because he wasn't a proper storyteller until then. But still.
I am also jealous that I can't anagram like he can.
Also, the narrator sounded a lot like Neil Patrick Harris. I kept forgetting it wasn't him. Great delivery on the lines.

I'm actually amazed at how many subtle little touches I missed when first reading this. It was 10th grade, so I'm not entirely surprised, but it adds so much to what I do remember of the story.
This is such an incredible book. I think it should be required reading for all high schoolers. So enjoyable, and so touching.
Also, Ron Rifkin is a really great narrator. Five stars for him, as well....more

These books are *truly* wonderful in her voice. These are books I've enjoyed since childhood, and hearing them read in Rizzo's voice is just too good to be true.

These aren't two of my favorite stories. These are two stories I could honestly care less about. Tabitha King doesn't have a bad voice, but she has a Maine accent, and as a Southernor, that RIPS ON MY NERVES like you couldn't believe. The gentleman who read "Umney's Last Case" wasn't bad, but his voice was rather boring.
This was like eating an apple. Not bad, but not the most exciting thing ever to happen....more

Save for "Crouch End", these are actually some of my favorite short stories by King. I've ALWAYS loved "Dolan's Cadillac", for the very sick reason that I love reading the meticulous details of precisely how he exacts his revenge on Dolan. Not because of the revenge, necessarily, just the planning. I'm sick, I need help.
But these stories with these voices? I enjoyed it even more than I thought I would. And with Crouch End, which is a little *too* out there for my enjoyment, hearing Tim Curry read it in that creepy-ass Pennywise-esque voice of his? Shivers up my spine, people.
Rob Lowe had entirely too much fun voicing Dolan's Cadillac. I'm just saying.
All that said, however. I will not be listening to any audio books done by King himself. I adore the man, I really do. But listening to his voice during the introduction grated every single inch of nerve ending I have. So no.

That's because I could hardly follow the short stories.
I should've read the book first. But after listening to M is for Magic, I felt confident I could follow along with this one. And I really couldn't.
I'm not going to say anything positive or negative about the stories until I read the book. The stories I could follow were either very very good or very very confusing. I blame it on the format of the audio books. There was no break between the main stories, but there were breaks inside of each story, and I was having a hard time figuring out when one started and another began. Stories that I thought had ended were still going, and vice versa.

My wonderful librarians asked if I wanted to hear an author speak, and handed me the flyer. Being psychotically protective of my home state, despite it's flaws, I went in to listen, thinking I would probably not be buying the book but it would be nice to hear her speak.
This book is wonderful. This isn't a dry retelling of heritage, a grocery list of Places To Go In New Orleans. This is actually informative, and brilliant, and wonderful, and I actually teared up while looking through the pages. This book, more than most any other books I've attempted to look at, really and truly sums up what it is that makes New Orleans a wonderful place to live and visit.
I highly recommend this book, not just to people actually living here, but to people who may never live here. People who've vacationed here and fallen in love with the beauty and laid-back attitude. In short, EVERY SINGLE PERSON who has me friended on Good Reads should go pick up this book and give it a look. Just amazing.
I had her autograph this for Falon. She has pride for this state, too, even though I don't believe she's ever set foot in the city of New Orleans. That's coming, she's got time. She was terribly excited when I told her I had a book for her (that she didn't have to READ like a normal book, SIGH) that was autographed especially to her from the author....more

10/20 - I'm not saying I will never read another book by Sue Grafton. However, I will have to apply two rules to this.
1) I will NEVER read another book narrated by whoever this woman is. She sounds like an incompetent Ellen Degeneres, and since I don't have a problem with Ellen's voice, I find it grating that I have a problem with hers. Her male voices are literally laughable, and her female voices sound like a man trying to mimick a woman. GOD that's irritating.
2) I will go into these books knowing that Grafton can write some SERIOUSLY convoluted stories. I don't understand WTF I just listened to/read. She took too long getting to some parts, and not long enough explaining others.
I do enjoy a good murder mystery. This was not a good murder mystery. But, if I happen to stumble across a free version of another book in this series, I might be willing to give it a try....more
