What inspired you to write El Deafo?

Cece Bell I read Raina Telgemeier's SMILE, and soon after reading it, realized that the graphic novel form would be the perfect way to tell my own story. The speech bubbles are especially useful in conveying what I can and can't hear. I was also simply ready to tell my own story!
