So for young writers I generally recommend making sure to spend time living and doing things and studying the subjects you are passionate about. That way you have filled your reservoir to draw from in knowledge and experiences so when you write (which you should also do all along; one way is to practice writing short stories about your adventures) you have so much more to pour back out. Your stories are made of YOU so make your life interesting. Your fight scenes will be be better if you know what it feels like to hit something (and be hit). Your descriptions of riding a horse, shooting an arrow, or exploring a castle will be much easier to write (and read) if you've done those things. If you know a lot about chemistry or geography or medical care or ghosts of the Revolutionary War...those things will find their way into your stories and give them substance.
Then write what you would want to read, write for a younger you. Someone else out there is looking for exactly that. Trust me.

I just finished your book, about 20 seconds ago and I am very upset that the second book isn't out yet. Please write as fast as you can to get that second book out, Mrs. Beaty! I believe in you. In case it's not clear, this book has become my favorite book. And that is a title, no other book has really had. So as you can see, I desperately need this second book. Will it stop at a trilogy? I am desperate! :)
