She thought she was the only one lying about her identity. Until she stepped into her sister’s life.
Charlotte Kane has always dreamed of a different life, one where she isn’t living paycheck to paycheck. An existence worlds away from the chaos of her own. Then her estranged mother dies, and Charlotte makes a stunning discovery—she has an identical twin who was given up for adoption.

Twist, after twist, after twist! Sometimes it was a little hard to keep everything straight. Who doesn’t love a good stolen identity trope and twins make it much more appealing. This thriller kept me guessing from start to finish. Just when I thought I knew where the plot was going, something would occur that was unexpected. The narration masterfully brought the story to life adding intensity, suspense, and emotion. The Petal chapters gave me chills. They were haunting, and frightening, while keeping me engaged and curious. The story is original and twisted in all the right ways. Thank you, NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for my audiobook.
“Want is an open grave that needs to be constantly filled.”
This quote has stayed with me for days since finishing Jessica Patch’s psychological thriller, The Other Sister. Patch’s characters are constantly on the move figuring out ways to keep shovelling.
You’ll meet Charlotte Kane who is struggling to make ends meet in Chicago when she learns that her mom has passed away. While going through her mom’s things, she finds a photo that shocks her. She has a sister - an identical twin! Charlotte drops everything to meet with her … and both sisters' lives are changed forever.
Masquerading is one of the most prominent themes in this book. I was feverishly turning pages to see if the characters were able to hang on long enough to ‘fake it until they made it.’ Patch made sure I was entertained, was left gasping, and that Charlotte and Acelynn buried themselves deep in my mind. I’m still thinking about them!
“This community of social butterflies is masquerading. Underneath they’re yellow jackets, and I’m not safe until I know what is truly going on.”
I was reminded that: ✔️A change of setting doesn’t mean a change of events ✔️Trying to be one step ahead is tiring and joy gets trampled ✔️Abandonment deeply affects our personality ✔️Being angry at God is a bumpy journey
This was a great story, my first by this author, but to use the cover as an example, I’d have loved a wider gap between the light and dark.
If you love 5-star twisty psychological thrillers with a very light Christian thread and dark undertones, a behind-the-curtain peek into the effects of long-term foster care, murder and plenty of deception, this one’s for you!
I was gifted this copy by the publisher through NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Jessica R. Patch delivers a psychological thriller in The Other Sister that probes the effects of trauma, the complexity of human depravity, and the faint glimmers of redemption. The story’s layered characters and twist-filled plot make for a compelling read, but the book’s darker tone and explicit content suggest it’s written with general market readers in mind, despite elements of faith woven into the narrative.
The story captures the raw realities of abuse, betrayal, and manipulation. Patch explores weighty topics like addiction and mental illness with unflinching honesty, but scenes such as Charlotte walking in on a couple engaged in sexual activity or her confronting violence and murder push the boundaries of what many Christian fiction readers may expect. While these moments enhance the novel’s gritty tone, they may alienate those seeking cleaner content or overt spiritual resolutions.
The faith element is present but understated, manifesting more as a subtle undercurrent than a guiding theme. Charlotte’s eventual reflections on mercy and redemption are impactful, yet they often feel secondary to the intense psychological and physical struggles she endures. Readers looking for clear depictions of Christian hope might find themselves wishing for greater balance between the darkness and light.
For fans of thrillers who can navigate mature and unsettling themes, The Other Sister offers an expertly crafted read. However, it leans heavily into the conventions of general market fiction and may not align with the expectations of more conservative Christian audiences.
Twisted tale! Charlotte Kane has had a rough start in life..addict mother, time in the foster system, strained finances and more. She learns that she has a twin. A twin with a mother, father and brother. A twin with a successful career and financial security. Charlotte covets a different life.
There are a number of unlikable characters in this novel, which means there a whole lot of possibilities for who is behind the bad things occurring. I guessed one of the bends in the road, but many others caught me by surprise. This novel grabbed from the beginning and didn't let go. The cover is perfect for the pages within.
My gratitude to publisher Harlequin Love Inspired for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
"Truth hidden in darkness always comes to light, and secrets with it. Sins always find you out." The Other Sister is a story full of surprises and secrets, hard to put down as the story unfolds. It begins with Charlotte, living in Chicago, who finds out when going through her deceased drug addict mother's things that she has an identical twin, Acelynn, who was adopted into a wealthy Savannah family. The two get together in Chicago but things go deadly for Acelynn with bad guys and Charlotte flees to Savannah to escape and becomes Acelynn. Did she escape one scary situation to move to another? Acelynn's friends and family are a narcissistic group of people full of unbelievable secrets and twists. Just when you think you have an idea of who did what, you have it wrong. A serial killer is on the loose on top of everything else. Evil lurks in the darkness but how can Charlotte brings events into the light and not cause problems for herself. Who would believe her? I hope that there is another book as this one left some dangles. Outstanding read. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. These are my thoughts.
The Other Sister opens with a tight, menacing setup: upon the death of her mother, Charlotte discovers that she has a twin sister who was adopted by another family shortly after birth. She quickly becomes obsessed with Acelynn and decides to reach out to this long-lost sister. When the two meet, tragedy soon strikes, and Charlotte assumes Acelynn's identity to protect herself. Charlotte finds that Acelynn was not all she seemed, however, under the veneer of her wealthy and successful life. Will Charlotte be able to keep up appearances, or will Acelynn's former life bring her crumbling down?
While I found the book intriguing and initially promising, the fast and furious plot twists towards the end took away from its dark impact and made the plot a bit more difficult to follow. The clear standout character was Petal — a child with a genuinely dark and dangerous core that gives the book its sharpest edge. It’s obvious early on that Petal is a younger version of one of the adult characters, yet because the reveal must stay hidden, her adult counterpart never quite carries the same haunting characterization, which blunted the impact overall. I wanted to be able to look back and say "oh of COURSE that was Petal, it's all so obvious now that I see it" but that gotcha tie-in just didn't seem to be there. Still, the book is entertaining with enough surprises to keep you turning the page. Romy Evans did a great performance on the audiobook narration, with seamless audiobook production by Harlequin Audio.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin Audio, and Jessica R. Patch for an advance listening copy for honest review. 3.75 stars rounded up.
“I learned very early in life to never burn a bridge, even if someone else lights the match….”
Very wise advice from the heroine of Jessica R. Patch’s psychological thriller, The Other Sister. I applaud the author on delving into the mind of someone who was in the foster care system and struggles with wounds of abandonment. As an ex-Extended Foster Care social worker, I know there are some youth who carry a heart of bitterness. And foster youth or not, who wouldn’t want a carve out a better life for themselves? But poor Charlotte. Circumstances had her in a real pickle.
I wish there was a little more faith development after Charlotte met Christian. She’s angry at God, which is a real issue and if done right, makes the story stick with me. Not saying that this one won’t. There are a lot of twists and turns in this unpredictable story.
This story will be great for those who love psychological thrillers, mind games, whodunits, serial killers, secrets, drama, women’s fiction, domestic thrillers, dark, twisted, family sagas, chilling beach reads, elements of horror, and maybe even split time novels.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All words are my own.
6⭐. A Thrill ride from start to finish. Twisty and dark, and right now stands as my favorite book by this author. It had me holding my breath and waiting to see who I could trust, and then...bam! The author threw a wrench into the mix.
I absolutely love a dark psychological thriller and this one did not disappoint. I binged it in less than twelve hours. If you love suspenseful stories that keep you guessing then you have to pick this one up! Just make sure you have plenty of time to read in one sitting. This is the type of story I would love to write myself someday.
*thank you to the author for a complimentary copy of this book, all thoughts are my own.
I've never seen a case of assumed/mistaken identity done so well! These characters were immense, vivid, and ever evolving. I was guessing what was going to happen right to the end! There were so many weird and wonderful things to follow in the story that at no point was I ever bored.
The audio, however, was a bit of a problem for me. There were many times it sounded like parts of audio were cut into the original and so they didn't match, increasing in frequency toward the end of the book. Each time it took me out of the story.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author Jessica R. Patch, and Harlequin Audio for my ARC of this audiobook.
This book is NOT for the faint of heart. This book is dark but also full of light. It doesn't shy away from the dark side of humanity or how absolutely twisted life without Jesus can become.
My goodness did this book take my on a journey of the most mind bending tale of my life. There were at least 4 different endings I anticipated. But like usual, Miss Patch made guessing the ending completely impossible, and I love her for it.
This book had me completely in its grip and I held no qualms. It took me 2 days to finish...after the first 5 chapters it took tremendous effort for me to set it down.
Again, this book is not for anyone who is only looking for light reads. Because this book was heavy. It was dark. But again, in true Jessica R. Patch fashion, the light of Jesus broke through the darkness. Like I said before, this book was a journey. And I absolutely adored every second. There wasn't romance in this book. And if you know me at all...that's not a norm for me. Like ever. But man am I glad I still read it. This story is for the Christian girls who love twisted, thriller tales that keep them on the edge of their seat and guessing until the very last page.
Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Love for providing a copy of this book.
What if stepping into your twin’s life reveals secrets that could destroy yours?
When struggling Charlotte Kane discovers she has an identical twin, Acelynn Benedict—raised in comfort and affluence—she can’t resist peering into a world she’s always longed for. But a tragic twist forces Charlotte to assume her sister’s identity, and the glamorous existence she once envied quickly proves darker than she ever imagined.
Suddenly, no one in Acelynn’s circle is who they seem. Deceptions, betrayals, and brutal crimes lie just beneath the polished surface. As Charlotte scrambles to untangle the truth, every step drags her further into a lethal web. Yet the alternative—returning to her old life—promises a fate just as dire.
Why You’ll Love It • Psychological Thriller Edge: With twists around every corner, the suspense and tension never let up. • Layered Characters: Charlotte’s desperation, Acelynn’s secrets, and a cast of both compassionate and chilling personalities keep you guessing. • Dark & Gritty Tone: Themes of abandonment, abuse, and murder will appeal to readers seeking a more intense thriller experience. • Subtle Faith Element: Threads of mercy and hope weave throughout, although the spiritual aspects remain understated compared to typical Christian fiction.
Content Note • Scenes of violence, addiction, and sexual content • Mature themes that may not align with conservative Christian fiction expectations
The Other Sister is an enthralling read for fans of gritty thrillers who don’t shy away from tough realities. With its pulse-pounding plot and moral complexity, it challenges you to ask: How far would you go for a chance at a new life—and what shadows might you discover in the darkness?
I read a lot, and I also read across a wide range of genres. Psychological thrillers aren't always my favorite, mainly because if a book is labeled "psychological" I expect certain things in that genre - an unreliable narrator, crazy plot twists, and not knowing what's happening at any given point in the story until the end when the pieces fall into place. Most seem to fall short for me - maybe it's a great story, but it doesn't seem to have that edge that gets in my head and makes me question my own sanity along with the characters'. But Jessica R. Patch nails the psychological thriller with The Other Sister. This is what a psychological thriller should be!
We have Charlotte, and she's a bit unreliable. We know she tries to be good, but has a dark past and is known for pretending to be someone she isn't. When she discovers that she has a twin sister, rich socialite Acelynn, Charlotte winds up assuming her life. But what she finds is that Aceylynn's life is complicated and very dark.
We also have lots of plot twists. The story took me down several paths only to leave me with whip lash. I couldn't possibly guess the ending. The characters are all a bit unhinged and any one of them could be the bad guys of the story. I love Jessica's story telling abilities and they way she reveals just enough information to string me along until the payoff at the end. And it's a fantastic ending. This isn't a traditional romantic suspense where everything is wrapped up neatly with a bow by the end. This thriller will have you thinking about the story long after you've put the book down. Get ready to binge read in one sitting!
I received an ebook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Another twisty thrill ride from Jessica Patch! This story hit the ground running and never let up! This one is a full-on Psychological thriller, and I would classify it as "Christian-light", but completely clean. There is a subtle faith thread hovering under the surface that comes to light at the end, but by and large, this one has a lighter faith thread than I'm used to with this author. It worked well for the story though. When Charlotte Kane learns she has a twin sister she was separated at birth from, she understandably wants to get to know her twin and seeks her out. When she has an opportunity to step into her sister's life, she learns that not all that glitters is gold. This story has a bit of a time shift as well, as a few chapters (headed simply as "Then") are journal entries from the past. Having both voices in first person threw me a bit at first, but once you are aware that the past are journal entries, it flows easier. While I thought I was smart enough to stay on top of what was happening, and the author kept proving me right in my assumptions, I got thrown for a couple of major curveballs at the end that I did not see coming. And the epilogue at the tail end, threw me even further as I still have questions. All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable ride and I can easily recommend this one to fans of suspense and psychological thrillers. Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
The Other Sister was a fascinating psychological thriller. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I found that I didn't have it all. And the ending. I totally wasn't ready for that!
The Other Sister by Jessica R Patch is a psychological thriller that had my head spinning, trying to keep up with all the mystery involved. Jessica had so many surprises, I was kept in the dark until the very end. I love the cover, but even that has a mystery connected to it.
Charlotte Kane wanted to live a different life. When she discovers she has an identical twin, she gets her chance. But, everyone has secrets and she walks a minefield, not knowing who she can believe. The deeper she gets involved in her sister’s life, the more dangerous it is.
As far as characters go, it’s hard to root for any of them, but they are fascinating.
If you think you can solve this puzzle, you might be in for a rude awakening. Every time I thought I had something figured out, Jessica would twist the plot in a new direction. The pacing kept the suspense level rising and me flipping pages.
This is my first Jessica R Patch novel, but now I have her on my radar.
Wow. This was a mind trip of deceit, lies and truly chilling moments that left me guessing at every turn of the page. Jessica Patch has once again proven that she can expertly craft a sinister plot that twists and turns until literally the last page. This story kept me hooked! I truly didn’t know who to trust, what was real and what was a crafted illusion. Each flawed character fits like a puzzle piece into this dark and unpredictable plot and all comes together in the end for a shocking conclusion!
The Other Sister was an intriguing story that had a lot of suspense, built tension, and had deep rooted family secrets. I had no idea where the story was heading, and the curiosity kept me invested to see how these sisters’ stories would play out. Despite my attempts to figure out how everything would unfold, this ended up being a completely unexpected turn of events that I did not see coming. I would definitely be reading more novels by Jessica R. Patch. The narrator in this audiobook brought a lot of emotion and depth to the characters, making it easy to stay immersed in the story.
Charlotte finds out that she has an identical, twin sister that was given up for adoption as a baby. Due to tragic and unforeseen circumstances, Charlotte is forced to assume her sister Acelynn’s identity, but she soon realizes that her sister‘s secrets are just as bad as the ones that she is harboring.
Overall, a good listen with an unexpected & satisfying ending. Recommend for those that enjoy twisty, keep you guessing thrillers. Thank you Harlequin Audio and NetGalley for this advanced listening copy. All opinions are my own.
The Other Sister was written in a gripping way and for the majority of the book I was enjoying the story and couldn't wait to read more...but, the story got way too dark and twisted for me and I didn't like it. I enjoy good thrillers and can handle a lot, but this one was too much.

Man this book!!!!! It had like twist after twist. And I mean ones I didn’t see coming and that’s saying something with how many domestic thrillers I read! It did a great job giving you bits about the past making you wonder who the heck this could be about and having you racing towards the end to find out! I also loved we got a little love story thrown in there and that always makes my romantic butt happy hehehhehe. But seriously great thriller and I need more from this author! If you love Jeneva rose, Greer Hendricks, or Frieda McFadden this book is for you!!!!! Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin for giving me a chance to read this early!!!!
Here’s the thing, I’ve read a ton of general market thrillers and quite a bit of Christian fiction. So when I tell you that this book is way more disturbing and icky than many of the general market thrillers I’ve read, that should really grab your attention. I found nothing remotely Christian about this book. The one positive I can say here is that there’s no profanity, but honestly I’d rather have dealt with that as opposed to some of this content. I cannot recommend this book.
Truth hidden in darkness always comes to light, and secrets with it. Sins always find you out.
The first person POV created a dark, thrilling atmosphere throughout the story and linked in to the third person POV in a way that made this reader think she had it all figured out, until the author revealed she had some few unexpected revelations up her writing sleeve.
Charlotte’s longing for a family was easy to understand and I found that I was rooting for her to fit into her sister’s life and use this opportunity to make better choices. The darkness and secrets involved in this life made me hope that she will just survive!
I really thought I had the ending figured out, but was glad to be proven totally wrong. Not a lot of authors manage to blindside me mainly because I read so many mystery/suspense stories.
There was an open-ended twist, so not sure yet if I want a sequel to get closure, or am happy being left to make up my own ending.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Charlotte Kane has lived a life of trauma and turmoil. The daughter of a lifelong addict, Charlotte was in and out of foster care her entire childhood. She saw the best and worst of what foster care could provide, but unfortunately the best portion was so brief it sits a a vague memory in her mind. Now, she is faced with some disturbing truths one, her estranged biological mother has fatally overdosed. Two, she has an identical twin sister, Acelynn Benedict, that is living the life that she’s always dreamed of living.
This is where the twisted tale begins. Nothing is as it seems and everyone has secrets. Lies, Murder, Manipulation, and a very disturbing diary of a mother with a child that possess evil within her.
There is a subtle undertone of faith, but it is smothered by the darker tones of a traditional psychological thriller. As a reader of Christian content, I would not categorize this as a Christian fiction thriller. There are very disturbing themes that I am sure are often found in mainstream thrillers, but to include them in Christian fiction is a stretch. One theme in particular was introduced near the end of the book, and it made me very uncomfortable. However, the book is free from profanity.
The author has a compelling writing style with a clear ability to tell a story, make you see glimmers of hope, and weave a tale that twists and turns continuously keeping you guessing and a little unsettled the way a thriller should.
Overall, the storyline started out as a very engaging read, but the edgy, crude and uncomfortable content was too much at times. Sadly, I cannot recommend this book to others seeking Christian content. This is terribly unfortunate, because the writing is so good but the story would have been just as convincing without the difficult to stomach content.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Netgalley and Harlequin in exchange for my honest review.
"Want is an open grave that needs to be constantly filled."
Jessica R Patch is the queen of suspense and psychological thrillers. This book had a little less gore than her previous but had equally matched intensity and stomach-dropping twists and turns in the plot. We got a quick glimpse of Special Agent Asa Kodiak from the Strange Crimes Unit series but this book had a serial killer on the outskirts of the plot and not as the central point of the plot.
The unnamed first person voice from "Then" was chilling and quite ominous juxtaposed with Charlotte's present first person voice. Charlotte was easy to love - a survivor who's lived through a lot of darkness and tragedy but still clinging to a shard of hope for a better future. When that hope turns into a desperate obsession to grasp at a better life, her plans unravel and she lands in the midst of high society where everyone is hiding their own secret darkness. All the characters, including Charlotte, drove home the propensity of man to sin while trying to justify the reasons for perpetuating such terrible acts. Faith and pursuit of truth held Detective Christian Patrick steadfast and set him apart from the other characters. Though he didn't have a voice in the story, I felt that we got to know him pretty well from his interactions with Charlotte. Faith wasn't overt in the story but did make an impact in Charlotte's life. There was very little romance between Charlotte and Christian but I wonder if we will see more of them in other books to come. And just when I thought the crazy rollercoaster ride of surprises had come to an end, the epilogue completely knocked me sideways. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, this is a must-read. You'll stay up way past your bedtime.

Great Twists and Turns. The Other Sister by Jessica R. Patch is a unique story. What if you could trade your life with a twin that you never knew existed? What would your life look like? What issues or joys would you find? Patch does a wonderful job at answering the questions. The suspense is pretty interesting and kept my attention. The Then chapters gave me the chills. What a horrible little girl. I kept trying to guess who she was in the regular chapters. Patch had me guessing to the very end. When she showed who it was, I was surprised, which takes a lot to do for me. She did a good job at keeping the actual villain a secret. Even at the end of the novel, there is another twist that I kind of figured out, but I needed Patch to show me. I really like her stories, and I hope she keeps writing them. Overall, The Other Sister by Jessica R. Patch thrilled this reader who LOVES to be surprised in a suspense book. This story definitely kept me engrossed the entire time. I can't wait to read her next book.
I received a complimentary copy of The Other Sister by Jessica R. Patch, but the opinions stated are all my own.
The Other Sister was a fascinating psychological thriller. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I found that I didn't have it all. And the ending. I totally wasn't ready for that!
I received this book from the author as part of a JustRead tour. I wasn’t asked to review it at the time, so it sat on my shelf for a few months. But I recently had some extra time for reading, and I’ve been wanting to focus on authors who will be at the Rendezvous 2025 Event. also knew I wanted to read something a little different for me—but not too different—so I went with a Love Inspired Trade.
If, oh, people of the bookish world, you will allow me to summarize my thoughts on this book in just a few sentences… here they are: I may never sleep again. Oh, the clever mind that wove this tale. I may be just a little bit afraid of meeting Jessica.
You will be on the edge of your seat for this entire ride. I truly never saw the ending coming—not even for a minute. Charlotte Kane is the MC throughout the book, but there are also snippets from the past labeled “Then.” Reading the two timelines together sends chills down your spine. Charlotte has a best friend, Tillie, and at times I questioned the things she said and did. But as the story unfolds, you slowly begin to understand her motives. Once Charlotte has to become her twin, Acelynn Benedict, you realize Tillie is an absolute dream of a friend. If you’ve ever longed for that perfect Instagram life, you definitely won’t after reading this.
This book was so good that, other than work, nothing else got done while I was reading it. No workout, no Bible study, and certainly no sleep.
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗖𝗞 𝗣𝗟𝗢𝗧 𝗣𝗘𝗘𝗞 Charlotte Kane discovers she has an identical twin, Acelynn Benedict, who was adopted into a life of wealth and privilege. When tragedy strikes, Charlotte steps into Acelynn’s world - only to find herself tangled in deadly secrets where no one is who they seem.
𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗡 I read and listened to this one and enjoyed both. The narrator did a great job matching the light vibe, and I especially loved her southern accent.
The story alternates between Charlotte’s perspective and a mysterious journal written by a woman who believes her daughter is a psychopath. These journal chapters were some of my favorites. I loved the intrigue and guessing how it related and who was who.
Acelynn’s wealthy, awful family and friends were fun to read about, but her internal musings sometimes slowed the story down. Some of the reflections felt repetitive, and I found myself wanting more action, less thoughts.
The ending sped up and there were so many twists I didn’t see coming which was fun, and I really enjoyed the final scene!
𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗛 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗? If you love messy rich people and the secrets they hide, this one’s for you. And if you enjoy a lot of introspection in your thrillers - plus the shenanigans of someone stepping into another’s life - run to read it!

This book is twisty and mind bending. I took my time reading it, because I was trying to wrap my head around what was happening. It turned out that it didn't help me anyway, I was, for the most part, in the dark about the who and the what as the story unfolded. I did guess one thing correctly though. :)
This is the first book I've read by this author, although I have multiple books by her on by TBR. I think it took me longer because I was afraid of some of the content/trigger warnings that she had listed. I anticipated not liking it because it's not a genre that I normally read, but instead I found myself sucked into the story from the beginning and wanting to know the ending. It was definitely hard to know who to trust and what was real and what was a facade. One of the characters was extremely unlikeable, but who was masquerading as that character in the present? Or were they?
It was a well-crafted story that left me with a bunch of questions but had a satisfying end too. The faith element in the story was very understated. There certainly was character growth between the past and the present/light vs. dark. Thank you to the author and the publisher for a complimentary copy. This is my honest review.
