The Pulitzer Prize was first awarded in 1917, intended to be "an incentive to excellence." There are 22 Pulitzer categories, with seven awarded for books, drama, and music. Prizes are announced in April and presented by the president of Columbia University.
The Booker Prize has been awarded yearly since 1969 for the best work of fiction written in English and published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Its aim has been to stimulate the reading and discussion of contemporary fiction. Since 1969, 35 men and 18 women have won the prize.
Established in 1950, the National Book Awards celebrate the best literature in the United States and ensure books have a prominent place in American culture. Awards are given in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translated literature, and young people's literature. Winners are announced in November.
The Women's Prize for Fiction is given to fiction written exclusively by women, regardless of age, race, nationality, or background. It recently celebrated its 25th year. Founders wanted the prize to recognize women’s critical views and creative achievements in fiction.
The Nobel Prize rewards discoveries that provide the greatest benefits to humankind. The awards presentation to new laureates takes place annually on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. Named for William Faulkner, the PEN/Faulkner Award honors the best fiction written by an American citizen each year. A panel of three writers choose the winner—it is the only major literary award given by writers to writers, with new judges each year. The first prize was presented in 1981.
Andrew Carnegie believed in the power of books to change the world. Since 2012, this award has recognized the best fiction for adult readers published in the U.S. to honor this belief. Given by the American Library Association, the winner is chosen by a seven-member committee of library professionals.
The National Book Critics Circle awards celebrate literature published in the United States in six categories—autobiography, biography, criticism, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. These are the only national literary awards chosen by critics. Winners are picked by committee and announced each March.
