It’s the summer of 1941. Europe is at war, but New York's Thousand Islands are at the height of the tourist season. Kennet Fiskare, son of a hotel proprietor, is having the summer of a lifetime, having fallen deeply in love with a Swedish-Brazilian guest named Astrid Virtanen. But the affair is cut short and the young lovers permanently parted, first by Astrid’s family obligations, then by America’s entry into the war.
The rigors of military life help dull his heartache, but when Kennet’s battalion reaches France, he is thrown into the crucible of front line combat. As his unit crosses Europe, from the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium to Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, Kennet falls into a different kind of love: the intense camaraderie between soldiers. It's a bond fierce yet fragile, vital yet expendable, here today and gone tomorrow. Sustained by his friendships, Kennet both witnesses and commits the unthinkable atrocities of warfare, altering his view of the world and himself. To the point where a second chance with Astrid in peacetime might be the most terrifying and consequential battle he’s ever fought.
With her signature blend of soul-stirring prose and emotional complexity, Laqueur takes readers on a journey through events that shape an American family’s weakest moments and finest hours. A Small Hotel illuminates the experience of ordinary people thrown into extraordinary circumstances, and their once-in-a-generation camaraderie, courage and resiliency. It’s a novel for the world, a heartbreaking, uplifting story of family, love and human endurance.

An Exaltation of Larks wins First Place in North Street Book Prize
Winning Writers is pleased to from its fifth annual North Street Book Prize for Self-Published Books. 1,657 entries were received from around the world, resulting in one grand prize and six category winners.
Suanne Laqueur of Somers, New York won First Prize in Genre Fiction for An Exaltation of Larks, an ambitious family saga spanning world events from the 1973 CIA-backed coup in Chile to the aftermath of September 11, 2001.
"An exploration of how people find a new family and home base after traumatic displacement ... the strength of this book was the characters' rich inner lives—their yearning for love and their devotion to one another, and the men's vulnerability as they overcame the taboo of same-sex attraction. There were not enough books in the contest where I genuinely felt something for the characters. This was one of them. Halfway through the novel, I was putting the sequels on my 카지노싸이트 wishlist."

Juleón "Jude" Tholet has survival in his DNA. His father, Cleón, lived through imprisonment and torture during Pinochet's military coup in Chile. His mother, Penny, risked everything to gain her husband's freedom and flee the country with their newborn son. But as a closeted gay teenager growing up in Vancouver, Jude is targeted by a neighborhood bully called El Cóndor, culminating in a vicious hate crime that forces the Tholets to flee their country again.
Jude cautiously rebuilds his life in Seattle, becoming an accomplished pianist, but his his wings have been clipped and he cannot seem to soar in his relationships. Only family remains a constant source of strength and joy, until a DNA test reveals something that shocks all the Tholets: Jude is not their child.
Stunned by the test results, the Tholets must dig into their painful past, re-examine their lives in 1973 Santiago and the events surrounding Jude's birth story. It’s a tale rooted in South America’s Operation Condor. It spreads through Pinochet’s terrifying regime of detention camps, torture, disappeared civilians and stolen children. The journey forces Penny Tholet to confront the gaps in her memory while Cleón must re-live an ordeal he’s long kept hidden away in a secret world. The tale ends with Jude digging through his genetic code in a quest to find his biological parents. Are they alive? Or are they among Los Desaparecidos—the Disappeared Ones?
Suanne Laqueur’s third book in the Venery series explores the desperate acts of love made in times of war, and the many ways family can be defined.

The Voyages of Trueblood Cay: Cover Reveal and Pre-Order
The Voyages of Trueblood Cay
After 1 year of research, 2 notebooks, 3 do-overs and a non-stop street fight, The Voyages of Trueblood Cay will release on January 24, 2019.
Huge kudos and bouquets to Tracy Kopsachilis for a STUNNING cover. (If you want the numbers it was 82 fonts, 67 images and 149 emails.)
This novel-within-a-novel from the Venery series follows the adventures of Pelippé Trueblood and the voyage he makes to find the Tree of Life. He's accompanied by Fen il-Kheir, half-man and half-horse, who proves to be an unwilling passenger. The quest to find the Tree overlaps with the emotional journey of Trueblood and Fen, from enemies to friends to lovers.
Essentially this book is... Well, I'll let Jav explain:
"You hold in your hands both the story I promised Flip Trueblood, and a love letter to my life. All the people and things that touched me, shaped me, hired me, abused me, valued me, found me and loved me are in its pages. This is the first book I wrote while I was in love, the first I wrote as an openly bisexual man and the first I wrote when I wasn’t for sale. All of which makes Trueblood priceless to me."
This is a fantasy novel. It isn't the genre I typically write. It might not be the genre you typically read. But rest assured it's a love story and an exploration of relationships and courage and resilience. It just takes place in a different world with giants and flying horses. If you'd like to come along, the ship is now boarding.
PRE-ORDER LINKS***
***Due to technical difficulties, print copies of Trueblood Cay are not available for pre-order. They will be on sale at Amazon on January 24th. Or order a signed copy
Giants have a word, gelang, which means "at hand" or "together with." I thank you all for being gelangos to me.

Cover Reveal: A Charm of Finches
I'm so excited to reveal the cover art for A Charm of Finches, the second book of the Venery series. My amazing cover designer, Tracy Kopsachilis, reversed the color palette of An Exaltation of Larks and created a custom trio of finches in oil paints. The two covers are beautiful side-by-side and I couldn't be happier with them.
Finches releases on November 1st and is now available for pre-order:

Pots and Lids (and Finches)
Old Jewish saying: "For every pot, there is a lid."
My awesome editor's saying: "If nobody hates what you wrote, nobody loves what you wrote."
I finished writing A Charm of Finches a couple days ago. To date, the hardest book and the most important book I've written.
Steffen Finch is an art therapist who works with male survivors of sexual assault. At the same time, he's beginning a passionate relationship with a male lover. Stef stands at the center of a range of human behavior, experiencing how men make love and war on each other. Parts of it are harrowing and horrible and they may push people's limits. Other parts are beautiful and sexy but may also push limits.
I'm proud of this work and I think it has a lot for readers to connect with. But it won't be for everyone. Some will grab it, some will pass. Some will read and love it, some will read and hate it. That's OK. I made a pot and there will be lids for it. There are millions of books for readers, and millions of readers for authors to connect with.
