“We were not designed rationally, but are products of a convoluted history.”

“Each galaxy, star, or person is the temporary owner of particles that have passed through the births and deaths of entities across vast reaches of time and space. The particles that make us have traveled billions of years across the universe; long after we and our planet are gone, they will be a part of other worlds.”

“In a perfectly designed world —one with no history— we would not have to suffer everything from hemorrhoids to cancer.”

Neil I'm thrilled to reveal the cover of my new book, coming Feb. 2025! ENDS OF THE EARTH: Journeys to Polar Regions in Search of Life, the Cosmos, and our Future.

Polar science tells us surprising things about the origins and inner workings of our world. And, the more we look, the more we find that we are deeply connected to these remote and fragile places.

It's been a privilege to tell the epic stories of discovery in the Arctic and Antarctica. Having worked in both polar regions over 3 decades, they have become part of me. It's hard to be there without feeling connected to those who've also discovered here both past and present.
