Somewhere near the crossroads of experience and imagination, if you search hard enough—and catch it in the right light, you may find a story worth telling. I was lucky to have found the thread of FORTUNATE SON in a small memory from my adolescence. The rest came from my somewhat dark imagination. The characters in the book were ladled from an old bucket brimming with memories of friends and strangers I've crashed into over the years.

I did a lot of living before I started writing. I sold stuff to people, sang jazz, and played rugby. Those experiences were helpful to my writing. But without the love of a strong woman and her insistence that I shine this dim light of mine, there would be no words...no book. Her name is Kathy and she's put up

If you're a writer you're sure to experience the dread of 'what comes next.' What I've found is that, in my writing, it's usually a symptom of a problem that is behind me, not in front of me—something I've written has boxed me in. In those situations, I back up and find the last place where things were humming. Did I make the story turn down a dead-end road? If I did, I scrap everything past that spot and turn the story in another direction. This isn't always the case with writer's block, but it seems to be the most likely issue when it happens to me. Thanks for the question.(less)

It's my debut novel, so there's a lot of joy in finally seeing that land in the reader's lap. The second book, A NOBLE SIN, is with the publisher now. That should release at the end of May (2025). So, what am I working on now? I have to come up with the next book in the Emma Noble Series. I'm thinking Book #3 might take place in Florence, Italy. The working title is A NOBLE KILL. I haven't written a word of it yet, and I'm feeling the procrastination anxiety of that!(less)

Why I Write Thrillers

"What's your book about?"

When literary agent Janet Reid asked me that question at the 2019 Writer's Digest Conference in New York City, I thought I had an answer. I'd been writing for three years, crafting what I believed was a compelling historical novel set in 1740s New Hampshire. I had characters with depth, dialogue that rang true, and sentences that were crisp and literary.

But as I stammered Read more of this blog post »
