The hidden message on my Taiwanese cover

Here's something cool. My mom informs me that there's a hidden pun on the traditional Chinese cover (available in Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc.)

Look carefully at characters at top right and bottom left--see how the bottom half of each is shaded out, almost ghostly? At top right, the radical for "ear" (耳) is shaded out; at bottom left, the radical for "mouth" (口) is shaded out. A nod to how no one in this family speaks (or listens)...

I really love this cover, but love it even more now that I know this.

I'm a judge for the PEN Open Book Award!

I'm delighted to share that I'm a judge (along with Héctor Tobar and Rachel Eliza Griffiths) for the .

The Pen Open Book Award is given annually to an exceptional book-length work of literature by a writer of color. It's truly an honor to help judge it--and I have been reading like a madwoman (40+ books over the past 2 months) as part of the process! It's opened my eyes to many new writers and many new forms, and I hope the award itself will do the same for others.

Our longlist will be announced in December, and in the meantime, you can read more about the award .
