In writing "Jane and Dan At The End Of The World" were you inspired by the Ann Patchett novel "Bel Canto"?
Colleen Oakley Absolutely! While my book is obviously satire and comedy, I certainly drew inspiration from Bel Canto (one of my favorite books!) and the way Ann was able to distill the small poignant moments of humanity in both the hostages and the hostage takers during such an intense situation.

I just finished 'The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise' and I loved it. Given your anecdote about Sybil Ludington and at least two characters named after towns in Connecticut (Danbury and Trumbull), I had to ask: did you grow up there? Congrats on the book's success. Fingers crossed that the movie works out.

Thank you so much for reading! I did not grow up in Connecticut, but I do love the story about Sybil. Danbury and Trumbull were just coincidental—had no idea they were towns in CT but I love that they are.

I have never, ever in my lifetime cried when reading a book. I'm a pretty emotionally strong guy- BEFORE I GO put me under the covers for a few minutes while the tears poured into the weaving of my pillow. What a phenomenal piece. As a writer I feel the emotion I am writing- and I wonder- did you feel it yourself when writing it as heavily as I felt it when reading it?

Colleen Oakley Thank you! My advice is to keep writing and keep reading— study how your favorite authors construct sentences/scenes/dialogue. Also, if you haven't read these books, I highly recommend: Stephen King's On Writing or Ann Patchett's This is the Story of a Happy Marriage ( a book of essays, but so much great writing advice included). Colleen Oakley Hi Anna! I don't currently have plans to write anymore on them, but I never say never. Who knows? In a few years, I may be curious what they're up to and start writing about them again. Thank you for your question!
