Still debating whether or not to give it 2 stars. Have gone with three because it did manage to get me invested.

One huge positive was that Mahurin is VERY good at her one-liner quotes being impactful.
Additionally, it was very easy to grow attached to her characters. I also really enjoyed the world building, and the unique way magic works - love it when fantasy books break the mould, and Serpent & Dove definitely succeeded here.

It is a Lot easier
