Keith (kgf0) | 374 comments Is there someone with higher-than-Super permissions who can do that, or who can teach me how? Someone appears not to know the difference between Author and Subject:

http://www.africa-eu.com/author/edit/...

No need for merging, and not the primary author on anything I can see, so it seems to be a straight deletion, but I'd rather not have to edit all those books individually and I can't see how to make the profile disappear.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments There is no delete ability for authors, the books need sorting manually and it is the auto imports adding biology by the looks of the Change log on the ones I looked at.

Keith (kgf0) | 374 comments Fantastic. I'll come back to it if no one beats me to it.

Shouldn't someone open a thread in Feedback about that, so a ticket gets made?

For what? To create a filter to prevent the dozen or so books that got tagged with Biology from being so tagged?

To prevent books that should be tagged Biology from being listed with author Biology. (Or did I somehow read this thread wrong?)

I'm not talking just Biology BTW, but any subject. (Is it possible that there was just no author in the import record, so the subject was accidentally grabbed instead?)

My point was that there was a very small number of affected books. Not worth the programming time.

Peter (pete_c) | 388 comments Sensible. Cost vs. benefit.

Keith (kgf0) | 374 comments Thanks to whoever beat me to that.

Peter's question made me curious how widespread the problem might be, and that led me to find another one that's a little bit trickier.

Author Chemistry actually exists, and should, but mostly appears as a secondary author-subject like Biology was above.

Physics, thankfully, does not appear to have the same problem. (Yet?)

I know that this is OT, but since started here I wanted to reply here. Maybe someone with the privileges to do so can move it to the proper thread (or start a new thread).

Out of 52 distinct works from Chemistry, I found only 1 book (Almost Doesn't Count) where Chemistry was an author; the rest were using Chemistry as a tag.

That is not counting the following titles and tags that were entered as authors:
Chemistry, and Computer 카지노싸이트 (1988 Dubrovnik, Croatia) International Course and Conference on t ( 1 distinct work)
Chemistry of the Cyclopropyl ( 1 distinct work)
Chemistry Study ( 1 distinct work)
Chemistry of the Quinonoid Com ( 1 distinct work)
Some other similar problem "authors" (there are many more.):
Study Abroad
Study Dangala (Thesis by Paul Dangala)
Study Group Staff (should be name of Study Group)
Study Commission (should be name of Study Group)
Study Media
Study Guide (25 distinct works}
Study Chem
study guides by John P. J. Pinal
Study Pubs
History Collection
History (Ancient)
History Of Britain
History Revolutionary
Text in French
Text Study
Book Prayer
Book Development Division
Book Division
Book And Cassette Classc
Math Books
math matiques math matiques et phys
Physics (227 distinct works) [sorry, Keith]
Physics Study Guides
Advanced Placement (43 distinct works)

ETA: The above (including all research and my slow typing) only took about 90 minutes to find and verify (including fixing 2 editions that I found with other errors that I did not list). There are many more examples out there.

I have also found dozens of examples where Author and Title were swapped by imports.

If imports were perfect, there'd be no need for librarians.

Those should all be fixed. (I can work on some tonight.) But I doubt there is a realistic way to filter out issues like these without also filtering out lots of correct/desired data.

All too true.

For anyone else wanting to find more of these kinds of errors, just choose your favorite (or least favorite) subject, and do an author search. Unless someone else already chose that one, I'll guarantee that you will find at least a few records needing fixing.

And if we know in what ways they are most frequently imperfect, we can hopefully also find ways to code around them when the cost/benefit justifies it.

I, for one, wish there were an easier way for Librarians to search for common errors (e.g., the above, dates included in the author_name field, variations in diacritic marks or high/low ASCII/UTF characters) but I'm not holding my breath until that becomes a priority.
