This thread is to discuss current reading. It doesn't have to be in a particular category.

Right now I'm listening to The Haunted by Bentley Little on audio at work. So far, it's got some serious creepy moments in it. I just hope that the ending doesn't go bad.

I'm also reading The Drowning Girl by Caitlin R. Kiernan. It is a beautifully written book with very much a classic weird in mind.

message 4: by Ken B (new)

Ken B I am currently reading The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Ectoplasmic Man by Daniel Stashower.

Sherlock Holmes meets Harry Houdini!

message 5: by Gwenyth (new)

Gwenyth Love (everythinggwenny) I am currently reading Real Mermaids Don't Hold Their Breath for review (ARC from the publisher) and A Game of Thrones for myself. As well as various textbooks for school (ick).

William Thomas (williamthomasmooore) | 5 comments Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons. Suddenly I realize what some of the hype surrounding him is for.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 61 comments Mod
I'm juggling several books at this moment. I started Hellblazer: War Lord, which is based on the Hellblazer: Constantine comic books. This is probably my darkest read right now.

message 8: by Ken B (new)

Ken B I am currently reading The Blackstone Chronicles by John Saul

Ken, is The Blackstone Chronicles the book that Saul released chapter by chapter about 15 years ago?

Ken B Jason wrote: "Ken, is The Blackstone Chronicles the book that Saul released chapter by chapter about 15 years ago?"

Correct! The edition that I am reading is everything from the serial in one volume.

I remember reading that as it was released! I loved that series. I should dig them out and read them again.

message 13: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine Also reading Disturb by J.A. Konrath!

message 14: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine Move over sparkling vampires, onto The Fall by Guillermo del Toro, what vampires should be...

Ken B Marc-antoine wrote: "Move over sparkling vampires, onto The Fall by Guillermo del Toro, what vampires should be..."

I did not like that series at all! Was too Dean Koontz-ish to me!

message 16: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine I like it so far, will let you know if it changes.

message 17: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I'm with you, Marc. I liked it.

message 18: by Marc-Antoine (last edited Jun 02, 2012 04:10AM) (new)

Marc-Antoine Yep, I'm really enjoying the fall, loved the Strain, and although inconsistent, and I can't say that I have enjoyed all of his books, and his endings mostly seem rushed But I also enjoy Koontz.

Ken, still a fan of yours as well, especially your comment on the death by, and death watch list. Hope you don't hold my different tastes than yours against me, lol...

Eileen, you rock!!!

message 19: by William Thomas (new)

William Thomas (williamthomasmooore) | 5 comments Just finished Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway which was more a mash-up of genres but just an absolutely perfect book.

message 20: by Ken B (new)

Ken B I just finished reading The Radleys by Matt Haig.

The Radleys are a pretty average middle class, British family. Except...they are vampires...and they forgot to tell their kids...and they also forgot to mention the rogue vampire that is their uncle. And then the problems start.

A pretty decent book. No sparkly vampires!

4 STARS

message 21: by Ken B (new)

Ken B Just started Water Witch by Deborah Leblanc. The reviews aren't great on this one but it looks to be a quick read.

message 22: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine Just finished Enemies & Allies, just o.k. Now starting The Passage by Justin Cronin for which I have high hopes.

message 23: by Ken B (new)

Ken B I just finished Water Witch by Deborah Leblanc.

This book frustrated me. Parts of it I really enjoyed and other parts seemed to drag on forever. Some of the characters were well developed and interesting and others were poorly defined and ended up playing a bigger role than I anticipated. I was glad to be able to finish it.

3 STARS

Ken B Just started The Beast House by Richard Laymon. Didn't realize I was stepping into the second book of a series. I don't think it was meant to stand alone, but as I am 1/3 of the way through it already, I think it will work.

message 25: by Ken B (new)

Ken B Just finished The Beast House by Richard Laymon.

Pretty average as far as I am concerned.

I read back through several of the other reviews and they ran the gamut from "Richard Laymon is the second coming of Christ" to "this book sucks, nothing but pornography and gratuitous sex". Well, it was neither.

Just a pretty average horror novel.

3 STARS

Ken B I just started The Spook's Sacrifice by Joseph Delaney. It is the 6th book in the The Last Apprentice / Wardstone Chronicles series. This has been a great (and I think under-rated) YA series.

Jason (darkfiction) | 54 comments Mod
That series looks really interesting, Ken. I think that I'll check it out.

message 28: by Ken B (new)

Ken B I just finished The Spook's Sacrifice by Joseph Delaney.

This is the sixth book in The Last Apprentice / Wardstone Chronicles series but the first book that feels like you are immersed in the battle between Tom Ward and the Fiend.

True to the previous books, Delaney weaves a decent tale of dark versus light.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who reads dark YA books without sparkly vampires or ridiculous romantic undertones.

Marc-Antoine Wow, Ken, your on fire.

message 31: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 31 comments I'm about one third through The Wind Through the Keyhole: A Dark Tower Novel. Not sure what I think so far. I also finished Lucky Bastard, which was really fun.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 61 comments Mod
I finished Hellblazer: War Lord. It was quite dark but surprisingly funny. Constantine is a character, but some of the side characters are the ones that had me laughing.

message 33: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) I'm currently reading The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. I'll probably read something lighter next, like Larklight or Nightwings next.

message 34: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine So far I am really enjoying The Passage

message 35: by Bill (new)

Bill (billymac) | 3 comments I'm reading Last Argument of Kings, the last in this fantasy trilogy. I begrudgingly started it because after the 2nd book I promised myself I was going to finish the series.
I say begrudgingly not to hone my typing skills, but because I have way too many other books I've been excited to read. Well, as soon as I got it into my Kindle I was hooked again. This series has such great characters and it's great to be back into it again!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 61 comments Mod
I just finished Dominion. Dark vampire action horror. Some parts are kind of disturbing. But those who crave really depraved vamps, look no further.

message 37: by Ken B (new)

Ken B I just finished The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen.

A skull with obvious signs of foul play is dug up in a garden, bringing to the surface a mystery dating the back to the 1830's.

The story flashes back from modern times as our protagonist attempts to solve the century and a half old mystery back to 1830's Boston as the crime is committed.

I really enjoyed this book. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that it doesn't appear Ms. Gerritsen has written anything else quite like it. More, Ms. Gerritsen, more!

4 STARS

Now back to The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel.

message 38: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine The Passage was very good, 4 stars. Now onto Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton.

message 39: by Ken B (new)

Ken B Just started Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

message 40: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) I'm gearing up to re-read Corum: The Coming of Chaos. It's been twelve years so I think I'm due.

message 41: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine Dog Blood, so far, very good

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 61 comments Mod
Reading Spider's Bite. Very gritty UF with a truly dangerous female lead. They don't call her the Spider for no reason.

message 43: by Bill (new)

Bill (billymac) | 3 comments I finished Last Argument of Kings so I can put that trilogy to bed.

I have just started Full Dark, No Stars and read more than I intended last night. Today I'm tired :)
King can sure pull me along.

message 45: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine Another great read with Unholy Night! Now starting A Canticle for Leibowitz

message 46: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 31 comments Still reading The Stand but also picked up Shadow Show: All-New Stories in Celebration of Ray Bradbury. Have only read the first story by Neil Gaiman but that was excellent.

message 47: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) I'm re-reading The Etched City and The Three Of Swords: Swords And Deviltry, Swords Against Death, Swords In The Mist at the moment. I'm not sure what I'll read next.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 61 comments Mod
Just finished The Cleaner and now I'm reading Delusion in Death.

message 49: by Ken B (new)

Ken B I am currently reading The People Next Door by Christopher Ransom. It has some pretty crappy reviews but I was one of the few that enjoyed another of Ransom's books, The Birthing House. So far, its got a pretty creepy feel to it.
