This is the Official Thread for The Patchwork Challenge!

Here you post your Challenge with what you think you are going to read etc. You can edit your post everytime your finish something or when you want to add a new idea. No need to repost the whole time.

If you can't edit, let me know!

You can however just make a post when you are done with a challenge:

"I just finished nr1"

I can then add your points at The Points Thread.

We also have a Suggestions Thread where you can have a look if you need an idea for what book to read, or where you can ask people for help with ideas.

This Starts on the 20th of July 2010 and last till the 20th of July 2011. You can jump in anytime and use the books you have read from the starting date. I know everyone will be honest :)

A book only counts once and lets keep it above 150 pages please! Audio books are allowed!

If you were before the half of a book when this challenge started you can use it!

Oh and yes I think of everything (i hope)

The winner gets to use this as their avatar for a week!

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lu: I can't believe the Da Vinci Code won awards! Were they based on sales?!

Sonette: I'll do a genre challenge with you, as I don't like love stories. What genres don't you read?

Naz: I did a search on your name, but nothing particularly interesting came up. What's your surname? If you can't find anything, we can always work something out with an alternatively spelt name or somethig.

message 13: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments Lauren, you're a star! I don't really read drama, westerns, historical fiction, chick lit, mystery and anything non-fiction. I basically read horror, fantasy, sci-fi, romance and thrillers. I'm a very plain, uncomplicated girl! Hehehe!

message 14: by Lauren (last edited Jul 21, 2010 05:26AM) (new)

Lauren Smith Oh, crap, I mostly read the same genres you do! The only thing I (occasionally) read that you don't is non-fiction (although that's not really a genre). When I read non-fiction it's normally philosophy, feminism, literature, or theology - not sure if you want to read anything in those fields? You can check out the non-fiction tag in my library and see if there's anything you're willing to read. The Pocket Penguins don't count though, as they're very short.

Otherwise, we can try subgenres. Sci fi subgenres I read are: cyberpunk, feminist sci fi, space opera (mostly Iain M. Banks), post-apocalyptic. If you don't like any of those, I'll pick a novel from one of those genres.

Are there any types of fantasy you don't like?

message 15: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments Hmmm, not really. I'll tell you what! You can pick any two random non-fiction books which you liked, then I have one for the non-fiction challenge two. Then you can pick one of the genres that neither of us reads and I'll look for a very interesting book for you? What do you think? If its not interesting then you know you don't want to swap genres with me again next year! Hehe! Just kidding!

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Well the whole point of swapping genres is to be able to talk about it with the other person, so if I read a book that you haven't read, it kind of defeats the purpose for me. If you do a non-fiction challenge with me though, you can recommend one of your love stories.

If I had to pick two non-fiction books for you, I'd choose No Logo: No Space, No Choice, No Jobs by Naomi Klein and The Philosopher and the Wolf: Lessons in Love, Death, and Happiness by Mark Rowlands.

You will probably have to buy both, but they're readily available at EB. No Logo is pretty thick, but interesting. The Philosopher and the Wolf is a much easier, more enjoyable read, especially if you love animals, dogs in particular. It's sort of autobiographical, mixed with light philosophy.

You can pick either of these, and then recommend a love story for me (something on the literary side, if possible, please!). It's up to you if you read the other for the non-fiction challenge :)

message 17: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments Lauren, I tend to read Mills & Boon and/or Harlequin romance books and therefore I can hardly say any of the romance books that I have read are literary. And to make matters worse I tend to lean towards Historical Romance. Do you want to try Sense and Sensibility?

message 18: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments Or the Notebook by Nicholas Sparks?

message 19: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'd take Sense and Sensibility, but I'd feel a bit bad about it, since I don't mind reading classics, and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite stories, so it's not really a genre I avoid.

I'll read The Notebook :) Otherwise, if you'd prefer to recommend a Mills and Boon or Harlequin romance, that's fine too. After all, this one is about trying new things :)

Are you ok with the non-fiction I suggested?
