Welcome :)

message 55: by Amy (new)

Amy Well that was helpful. I added two more books. So I only have four holes in my list now. I wish you could search goodreads by letter.

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Amy - I was thinking the same thing. I just wanted to search my TBR list by title...it would have made things so much easier. LOL!

message 57: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Ooh Angela, this looks like so much fun! I'm going to try & do this too!

message 58: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) You can sort your to-read list by title if you click on the header. That's what I did, too!

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Thanks Angela. Off to try that.

message 60: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments That's what I did. I also have a TBR-own shelf so I went there first :)

message 63: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I'm going to have to stop looking at everyone else's lists! Sooo many good books!!

*puts fingers in ears and closes eyes*

message 64: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Lol!

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments I so know what you mean Angela. Oh, since I haven't done the task/challenges before do you just submit a comment with what you read and how many points?

Thanks.

message 66: by Angela Sunshine (last edited Jun 28, 2010 01:29PM) (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I will start up a new thread for reporting points on Thursday. And yes, you'll just comment with the info. I'll ask that you give me the title, author, tasks the book works for (i.e. award winner, Kellee's challenge for July) and total points you calculated for that book.

I've got an Excel workbook set up with formulas galore, so I'm hoping it will work to keep our tallies straight. :)

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Thanks Angela...

Laura (apenandzen) Hey Angela - I've got a couple questions. Will books we start reading prior to 7/1 count, as long as more than half the book is read after 7/1? And do you have to read books from A to Z before doubling up on letters? Also, are we going to earn any extra points if books are over a certain length?

Thanks for doing this. It can be time-consuming to setup and run a Challenge, so we appreciate you doing this. Bet your spreadsheet is awesome! That should help a lot.

Great questions, thanks Laura! You guys think of things I don't! Sooo, I'll say yes to books less than 50% read on 7/1. No, you don't have to read all the letters before doubling up (extra letters are worth less points anyway). And, no extra points for longer books. But keep in mind if there's a tie at the end total pages read will come into play.

message 70: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Did you guys notice in the rules that I copied Misty and am giving away two prizes at the end? I liked the bonus participation prize idea. :-)

message 71: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Woot for prizes! :-D

message 72: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments With the +5 points for being an award winner- Is that just a one +5, or is that +5 per award it has won?
I know that The House of the Scorpion won a Newbery and a Printz honor, and I believe it might have also been and ALA notable or something similar.
So, is is +5 per award, or just +5 per book?

message 73: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I was curious if any award works, or does it have to be a major award like Newbery or Printz? Can it be ALA Top Ten, for example?

message 74: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) +5 for it winning one or more awards, not +5 per award

I'm pretty lax on award standards, but I think it should be an actual award (honor or main) and not just part of a Barnes & Noble's booklist or something. Does that make sense?

message 75: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah. I think if GR lists it in the awards on the book's profile, it should work.

message 76: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Laura wrote: "Yeah. I think if GR lists it in the awards on the book's profile, it should work."

That's what I did. If GR has it with an award, I gave myself 5 points.

message 77: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Works for me!

message 78: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I also updated WT's awards link with the current year winners.

message 79: by Amy (new)

Amy Oh so goodreads lists the awards on the book page? I didn't realize it.

message 80: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Amy wrote: "Oh so goodreads lists the awards on the book page? I didn't realize it."

Yep- Just click on the book and in the description box it lists any awards.

message 81: by Amy (new)

Amy Excellent. I was trying to figure out how to do all the awards stuff.

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Wow! I am learning so many new things about GoodReads. HaHa!! Thanks for all the tips.

message 83: by Amy (new)

Amy This is just making me more obsessed with goodreads.

message 86: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments Okay, soooo... I'm kinda sorta going to be attempting this challenge. At least, it's making me order (and make LISTS!) the books that I'm going to be reading over the next few months. (I say read, but I'm mostly going to be listening to these at work.) So, here are the YA books that I'll be reading (because I'm sure everyone wants to know **rolls her eyes self-deprecatingly**)

A: The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents
C: Catching Fire
H: The Hunger Games
I: Interworld
J: Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow
L: Leviathan
Q: Quaking
U: Uglies
X: The Adoration of Jenna Fox
Y: The Red Pyramid
Z: Zombie Queen of Newbury High

message 87: by Amy (new)

Amy Thanks for posting your list. Yours actually helped me fill in a few holes in my list!

message 88: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments Amy wrote: "Thanks for posting your list. Yours actually helped me fill in a few holes in my list!"

Sweet! Which ones are you going to try out?

message 89: by Amy (new)

Amy Jake Ranson and th Adoration of Jenna Fox.

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Amy - Adoration of Jenna Fox is wonderful though it starts out slow but I felt that was intentionally (or at least it felt that way at the end).

message 91: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments Amy wrote: "Jake Ranson and th Adoration of Jenna Fox."

Very cool - I'm going to be reading Jake Ransom in August and Jenna Fox in September, if you'd like to read them with me. Then, we can chitter on about them!

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Okay, if I wanted to start posting for points how do i do it? And curious, if I have an ARC of a book that won't be released until November would that count?

message 93: by Amy (last edited Jul 05, 2010 10:53AM) (new)

Amy Sounds good Jesi! Hopefully I'll be able to get them from the library around that time!

Not sure Alyson. Isn't there a thread where people have posted already? I think so. From what I remember I think everyone is posting their book, all the categories it fits into and then the points.

Quick question about paranormal: do Angels cound as paranormal?

message 94: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mldavisreads) | 210 comments Alyson, I think ARCs still count, as long as you read them during the challenge months. At least I hope so because I was planning on reading some of mine for the challenge. Jesi, if you're going to be listening to the books you listed, I thought The Adoration of Jenna Fox was really good on audio.

message 95: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Sorry, I've been busy with the holiday weekend...

Yes, I think ARCs are fine. If the book is listed on GR, we'll use the page total it gives here. If it's too new, then we'll use whatever the actual page count is for your copy.

Alyson, to post points, you go to the "Reading Challenge #5 - Report Points Here" thread and just post them in a comment. I will be updating the leaderboard as often as possible. Be sure to list for me all of the points your book qualifies for (whether it's an award winner, or fits Kellee's challenges or whatever).

I'm pretty easy on the genres.. I'd say angels would fit paranormal or fantasy/supernatural. Your call. :)

Excellent! That was how I was going to do it (I listen at work - books are vital for my job!) but hearing this makes me look forward to it even more!

message 99: by Amy (new)

Amy Okay great. I was planning on using it as paranormal.

message 100: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) So- I just had to complain!! I am currently reading Redwall and it is really good so far, but the writing is really small and I broke my nose on Tuesday and have a really hard time reading... and the small print IS NOT helping. :( I was hoping to read 15-20 books this month, but it is not going so well so far.

And I know, you are going to say switch books, but I can't do that. Part of my mild OCD is I have an order and I have to follow it... :P

UGH! Okay, done venting. Thank for listening.
