Amanda Orlich Ahern (kittymeowxcore) | 56 comments I didn't see a discussion involving introductions, so I thought I'd make a topic for this! First of all, I am SO excited to see a young adult fiction groups for adults. I get annoyed somewhat easily, so some of the other groups that focus on young adult series are very...painful for me. (makes me feel like I'm in middle school again.)

Hello, my name is Amanda. I literally joined this group about 5 minutes ago. I love to read; I've been reading obsessively for about 10 years. I really started getting into romance novels when I was 14 or 15, and then branched out to other fiction novels, paranormal romance, and urban fantasy. About 2 years ago my little sister gave me the Twilight book to read, and I actually liked it. From then on, I've accepted that I can be an adult and still enjoy young adult books.

I've only read a few YA series, and am looking for more. I love how I can read them so fast; they just fly by. In the last year I've read the Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr, The Seer series by Linda Joy Singleton, The Twilight series and The Host by Stephenie Meyer, and most recently The House of Night series by P.C. Cast.

Next on the agenda is (at some point) Vampire Academy, The Summoning, Tithe, and Fallen.

Rhonda (helpmerhonda72) hi, recently joined myself, I have some suggestions on a few books. All 3 Maggie Stiefvater books. Suzanne Collins: The Hunger Games, and "Catching Fire"
Kristin Cashore; "Graceling" and "Fire"

Maria V. Snyder (maria_v_snyder) | 14 comments Hello! I'm new as well :) I saw this group on a recent friend's page and lurked for a while before joining.

Obviously I enjoy reading YA books - fun, fast and there are some excellent books being published in this genre.

I agree with Rhonda - Collins and Cashore are both good - I haven't read any of Stiefvater's yet, but I have a signed advanced reading copy of Shiver on my shelf (one of the perks of being a writer :)

message 4: by Alisha (new)

Alisha Burtt | 2 comments Hey I just saw this on one of my friends pages and thought it would fit me.

Im kind of at the in between age of 20. where i really like YA books but i also like adult. I have a lot of younger friends and I like to be able to pass on really good books that I think they'll really like too. I read through books really quickly and love it because I have a really vivid imagination.

Lately some of my favorite authors have been Cinda Chima, Maria V. Snyder, and Cassandra Clair.

message 5: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (fairysky) | 1 comments I just joined after seeing this post on my update. I seem to have spent the last few years deciding once past 18 I should concentrate on adult fiction. Now I just laugh at my younger self as there are far to many good Young Adult novels I've over looked.

I think I have to agree with nearly every book on this page that has been mentioned, as for the ones I haven't read, I'm sure they'll make it onto my to-read list.

Defintie favourite authors have to be Maria V. Snyder (thanks so much for the fab books Maria :) ), Kristin Cashore, Trudi Canavan, Cassandra Clare, Alison Croggon, Maggie Stiefvater, Suzanne Collins and Lian Hearn

message 6: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan (jonathan_maberry) | 10 comments Hello all, I just joined the group. I'm Jonathan Maberry, a NY Times bestselling author. I have my first YA coming out in September --ROT & RUIN (Simon & Schuster). It introduces Benny Imura, a fifteen year old boy growing up in a dystopian world filled with zombies and treacherous bounty-hunters.

My other books are for the mainstream adult crowd (thrillers for St. Martins Griffin; horror for Pinnacle; movie tie-ins for Tor; and nonfic books on the supernatural and pop culture for Citadel).

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm 38 and love YA books. Mostly YA paranormal but other YA too. The Twilight series hooked me on paranormal books but Judy Blume was my fave YA author growing up. YA paranormal and YA romance are my favorites.

I've also read the Harry Potter series, House of Night series and all of Maggie Stiefvater's books. Absolutely LOVED Shiver and Lament but found Ballad a little more difficult to get through even though I liked the characters.

In case it isn't obvious, I tend to read series books as I hate when a good story ends. :)

message 8: by Rhonda (last edited Feb 16, 2010 01:08PM) (new)

Rhonda (helpmerhonda72) I like series as well. Have you read the Vampire Academy books yet??? I wasn't sure when I started them, but they're wonderful!!!

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I keep meaning to add those to my list. Are those Richelle Meade?

Ooo, Yes. Don't miss out on those.

message 11: by Chachic (new)

Chachic Hi, I'm new here! I'm new to 카지노싸이트 in general but I saw this group and decided to join since I enjoy reading YA books and the group has some interesting discussions. :)

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Hi everyone, I'm relatively new here as well, although I jumped right into the Hunger Games forum because I LOVE those books. I love all kinds of books, but when I just want to sit and read and not so much think I tend to pick up YA books. I don't think I'm nearly as well read on the subject as most of you because I tend to get the majority of books from recommendations from friends and they aren't all YA readers. I'm 24 and love to read something good and interesting. I do lean toward fiction and classics.

Some of my favorite books of all time include...
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston LeRoux
anything (and I mean anything) by Christopher Moore
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder (non-fiction)
The Bridget Jones Series by Helen Fielding
anything by David Sedaris

Some of my favorite YA material includes...
The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling (yes the later books are definitely YA)
Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer (although I confess BD cheapened the series for me immensely and the writing itself isn't that great, I did enjoy reading them at the time. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next)

Anyway, I wanted to say hi. I think I'm thoroughly addicted to this site and group now, so I look forward to hearing from all of you.

message 13: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Hello Brittany! Welcome. I too love Bridget Jones, Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games. So glad to hear a fan of the Twlight series being honest about it. I always want to throw something when I see reviewers on here say "best book ever" about Breaking Dawn. That was the biggest piece of gargabe I have ever read. Anyway - I am very sarcastic, so please know in advance I mean no harm :) It always nice to find new friends on here. Please jump right in - I did when I started!

message 14: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Hi Brittany and welcome also! Good to see you here and feel free to jump right in wherever you want. We're all a good bunch here. Lot's of great recommendations, great arguments discussions, and a great mix of snark and sarcasm. You'll love it here.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments I think I already do. You ladies are great. I don't know how I'm ever going to actually get any work done while I'm actually at work now. Sigh.

message 16: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Britanny, my work ethic has definatley taken a nose dive since finding this group. It has been worth it though :)

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments That's good I guess seeing as I'm at work right this second.

message 18: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments I feel you - I just started with this group a little bit ago and I find myself hanging out here all day. The other group I am in? not so much.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to all our newbies! My work turnout has also gone down the crapper since I started posting in this group. I'm in other groups but hardly ever check those now that I've met all you ladies. :)

message 20: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I don't work, but even still this group is cutting into my reading time. It would be much harder if you gals weren't so dern likable.

message 21: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Right back at you Blue Moon and Peep :)

message 22: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 21, 2010 07:36PM) (new)

Exactly! Everyone here is awesome! But I'm thinking I must be sadistic to put up with all the anti-Twilight abuse. LOL!

message 23: by S.S. (last edited Mar 21, 2010 05:47PM) (new)

S.S. (ssrice) | 75 comments Hello everyone. I am also new here, but have been on GoodReads a while.
I am a YA writer and have two teenagers. We all read the same books. I prefer the Fantasy ones.
My favs: Lian Hearn's Tales of the Otori series, Maggie Stiefvater (met her at a conference) and Cassandra Clair.

BTW, my family just watched "New Moon" together, and my husband kept making comments like "Did this even have, a director? Why does Bella look like she's stoned in every scene?",etc. The rest of us rolled our eyes. ;-)

message 24: by Heidi (new)

Heidi S.S. welcome! I can't believe you got your husband to watch New Moon (not that I disagree with a thing he said!)
Blue Moon - I know you gave Breaking Dawn 4 stars (I checked) and am very disappointed! That book was horrid.

message 25: by S.S. (last edited Mar 26, 2010 12:05PM) (new)

S.S. (ssrice) | 75 comments Oops! That was def. a mistake. I thought NM was the weakest of Stephanie Myers's books.

message 26: by Heidi (new)

Heidi What??? Your cousin controls your stars??? Come on - give it the 1 star it deserves. I double dog dare you!

message 27: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Just a bump to remind new people to introduce yourselves :)

message 28: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Hi Everyone. My name is Sheila and I live in Illinois on the Mississippi River. I am 58, married, mom of 2 , grandma of 2. I very recently retired after 37 years as a respiratory therapist.

My hobbies are quilting, reading and anything techie. I rarely buy books. I am very fortunate that I live only about 2 blocks from our new million $$ library. I have a difficult time reading regular or paperback print so usually order everything either in LP or audio. Our library is in a network with a whole bunch of other libraries so I can usually get what I need delivered to my local libary. I LOVE my library.

I like to read all kinds of books but I guess my favorite genre is mystery/thriller books. I like to read YA books as a break from the heavier and longer books I normally read. I'm looking forward to your recommendations of books/authors and series to read in the YA category.

I am currently reading 5 books. (My hubby says I am the Queen of Multitasking. I just discovered 카지노싸이트 last month and have been busy putting in my book list. (I am only up to the J's). Anyway I look forward to meeting you folks and sharing as well.

Sheila

message 29: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Sheila - I live in IL too. I grew up on the Mississippi in MN and I miss it terribly- being in central IL is soooo boring. Anyway, I love audio books too and get everything from the library. I wonder if your library is in my network, because it includes a ton of libraries. I like mysteries too and also belong to a cozy mystery group. Anyway -- welcome again :)

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Glad you're here, Sheila! There's lots of good YA books to choose from. Sounds like you are living the life...grandkids, retired, quilting and all this reading! I'm envious! I think we are all working towards a wonderful life like that. :) I think of myself as an excellent multi-tasker but no way could I read more than one book at a time.

message 31: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments Welcome to the group Sheila!

message 32: by Josie (last edited Mar 26, 2010 02:53PM) (new)

Josie (maid_marian) | 41 comments Wow, this group has certainly found a new lease on life! Hi all, I'm Josie, 23 from Adelaide, Australia. I've actually been in the group for over a year, but only commented sporadically, and thought I'd introduce myself to all you newbies. Some of my fave books are Harry Potter (of course), The Sherwood Ring, I Capture the Castle, The Hollow Kingdom, The Hunger Games, The Only Alien on the Planet, Summers at Castle Auburn, and the AMAZING Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. Although I'm always up for reading great new books, I love re-reading old favourites!

message 33: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Hello Josie. I am reading The Thief now and love all the HP books. Geez! Some of the "others" on here really monopolize these threads, but not me! *cough *cough.

message 34: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Thanks for the very nice welcome.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Nope, I NEVER talk on here either. And we agree on everything and NEVER have, shall we call them "spirited debates".

;) it's all in good fun though.

Hee hee :)

message 37: by MG (new)

MG | 1 comments Hi I'm MG. I'm 28 and a teacher living in California. I've been a goodreads member since august, but am new to groups. I've rekindled my love for fantasy and paranormal YA after a decade-long addiction to "chick-lit," especially after I read The Hunger Games. I've gotten a lot of my students into it as well.

message 38: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Hi MG - Welcome to the group. I'm glad you are here because now I'm not the new kid on the block. "TAG" you're it!

But seriously I'm thinking this group will be a whole lot of fun from what I've seen so far.

message 39: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Welcome MG :)

message 40: by Annie (new)

Annie Oosterwyk Welcome to the group,
I don't think I ever introduced myself either. I am an east coast transplant from WI and have really been enjoying the banter that goes on here as well as the great book recommendations.
I am a middle school librarian (the perfect disguise for an adult who loves YA) so I try to read a wide variety and as much as possible in my spare time.

message 41: by Susan (new)

Susan Annie, I'm the opposite of you. I am from New Jersey, born and raised and now live in Southeast Wisconsin.

message 42: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Hi new/old everyone! Glad to see meet you all. Hugs all around!

message 43: by Annie (new)

Annie Oosterwyk Susan,
How are you liking those winters?

message 44: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellezink) | 168 comments Welcome, Sheila!

I'm not the best emissary for this group as I can't spend as much time here as I'd like (I'm a writer and single mom of four), but I'm glad you're here!

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments This is great. Welcome to everyone, although I'm relatively new here myself (not that you can tell). I look forward to chatting and debating with you all.

message 49: by Alan (new)

Alan (coachmt) | 72 comments Just found this site and this group — better late than never, right? ; ) I'm soon to be 44 (when did I get so old?) and not only reader but writer as well. I've just finished my first YA novel: A Measure of Disorder, the first chapter is posted in my writing if you'd like to have a look and comment.

I'm looking forward to participating in the discussions here!
