Patrizia's new challenge takes us to a beloved pilgrimage trail in Scandinavia.
The most famous pilgrimage trails in Europe are those of Santiago and the Via Francigena; few know that there is another one by the name of Saint Olav Way. As with the Camino de Santiago, there are multiple routes available, although the final destination is always Trondheim in Norway. Let's take a look at the various routes together.
✱ Also known as The Pilgrim's Route, (Pilegrimsleden) or the Old Kings' Road, the many variations of this pilgrimage all end at the cathedral that houses the tomb of St. Olav.
✱ Much of the journey takes place in Norway, where eight different routes are available (one is by sea). There are two other routes starting from other countries in Scandinavia.
✱ Schedule your arrival in Trondheim for the end of July to participate in the great festival of Olavfestdagene which celebrates St. Olav.
✱ Like the other European pilgrimages, here, too, a credential is available on which to affix various stamps along the route. While visiting the Trondheim cathedral you can collect a certificate at the end of the pilgrimage.
Complete 12 tasks (one from each section).
Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

Trail and Tasks
1. Saint Olav
Let's start by learning a little about the man behind the trail. Olav Haraldson was born around 995 and became king of Norway in 1016. Two years earlier he had converted to Christianity and imposed this religion on his kingdom. In 1028 he was driven out by the Danish king Cnut the Great and died two years later trying to regain his kingdom. Considered a national hero in Norway, he was canonized as early as 1031 and Trondheim Cathedral was built specifically to house his remains.
✱ Read a book with a character that is a king (share name) OR
✱ Read a book with the word HERO found in the text (share text) OR
✱ Read a book with an author name or title that starts with the letter O (ignore A, An or The).
2. Gudbrandsdalsleden
The Gudbrandsdalsleden is the longest of the eight routes in Norway (643 km or 400 mi), and can be covered in 32 stages. It's the most popular among pilgrims, although it takes around 4 weeks to walk. It starts in Oslo, the current Norwegian capital, and crosses the Gudbrandsdalen Valley, from which it takes its name. Along the way you will visit six national parks and the Olympic city of Lillehammer. This region is known for the richness of local products, traditional architecture (including the famous wooden churches typical of Scandinavia) ,and very varied landscape. All this makes it one of the major tourist destinations in the nation.
✱ Read a series book #8 or #4 OR
✱ Read a book over 400 pages long (share page count) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in GUDBRANDSDALSLEDEN VALLEY (3 word minimum).
3. St. Olavsleden
This route begins in Sweden in Selånger and has high symbolic value because it retraces the last journey undertaken by Saint Olav when he tried to reconquer his kingdom. The route is 580 km (360 mi) long and includes 30 stages. The climax is reached in the village of Stiklestad where a battle took place in which the holy king lost his life on 29 July 1030. It should be noted that Norway now follows the Lutheran religion and the actual remains of the holy king were lost, perhaps burned. Today the pilgrimage does not have a true religious value, but instead pays homage to this great historical figure.
✱ Read a book that includes a death of a character (briefly share details) OR
✱ Read a book published in July (share publication date) OR
✱ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL in its GR homepage.
4. Østerdalsleden
This is the wildest of the Norwegian routes, so much so that it is recommended only for the most experienced hikers. Furthermore, its 320 km (199 mi), divided into 21 stages, can only be done in summer. During the Middle Ages this path was very popular with pilgrims because following it you could go from Trondheim to Vadstena, where the Swedish Saint Birgitta was venerated.
✱ Read a book set primarily in summer OR
✱ Read a book with a male AND female MC (they don't have to be a couple) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initial is found in OSTERDALSLEDEN.
5. Nordleden
This is the shortest of the Norwegian routes: it is, in fact, only 135 km (84 mi) long, which can be covered in 7 stages. It starts from Gløshaug Church, north of Trondheim, and passes through Stiklestad, where its route and that of the St. Olavsleden trail join together. Despite its brevity, along this route you pass through several locations linked to St. Olav.
✱ Read a short book (between 100 and 150 pages; share page count) OR
✱ Read a book belonging to a series with at least 7 published volumes (share series name and number of volumes) OR
✱ Read a book with an MC whose first name begins with a letter found in NORDLEDEN.
6. Romboleden
This is the oldest of the pilgrimage routes in Norway, and a very important trade route with Sweden. Most of the 150 kms (93 mi), which are divided into 7 stages, pass through mountains and woods and is reserved for expert hikers. In some places it is essential to have a tent and camping gear because there are no accommodations available. The route starts at the Swedish border, which can be reached by two different paths.
✱ Read one of the books that has been on your TBR the longest (tell us when it was added) OR
✱ Read a book where the characters camp (briefly share details) OR
✱ Read a book that has been published with two different titles (share both titles; translations don't count).
7. Borgleden
This route, 176 km (109 mi) long and doable in 9 stages, crosses the southeast of Norway, and can also be covered by bicycle. With this route you reach Oslo, from where it will then be necessary to travel along the Gudbrandsdalsleden. This route does not stray far from the coast and passes through several villages and towns. Among the most unmissable stops is the Fredriksten Fortress, dating back to the mid-17th century.
✱ Read a book with a coastline on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book where the MC rides a bicycle (briefly share details)OR
✱ Read a book set in a location that starts with a letter found in BORGLEDEN (tell us where).
8. Valldalsleden
About 150 km (93 mi) long and practicable in 7-8 stages, this route connects Valldal, on the coast, to Mount Dovre, where it merges into the Gudbrandsdalsleden. The greatest attraction of this route is that it allows you to admire one of the symbols of Norway: its fjords. According to legend, Saint Olav followed this path when he was forced to flee Norway in the winter of 1029.
✱ Read a book that has both the letter F and J in the title (they do not need to be together) OR
✱ Read a book set primarily in winter OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initial is found in VALLDALSLEDEN.
9. Tunsbergleden
This route starts in Larvik, near the Oslo Fjord. In its 190 kms (118 mi) and 9 stages, it leads to Baerum, crossing small towns and countryside. You pass through the county of Vestfold which is rich in medieval remains, some of which are certainly worth a visit. It is a very relaxing itinerary, which eventually joins the more famous Gudbrandsdalsleden.
✱ Read a book set in the countryside or a small town (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book that you found relaxing (tell us why) OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in TUNSBERGLEDEN (ignore A, An, and The).
10. Kystpilegrimsleia
This maritime itinerary, 1080 km (671 mi) long, requires the use of boats because it is not entirely accessible on foot. Here we start from Egersund and after touching, among other villages, Stavanger, Bergen and Alesund, we reach Trondheim after 24 days. The sea route has always been important for trade and travel in Norway since the Middle Ages, although not everyone could pay for a passage by ship.
✱ Read a book with some kind of water craft on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book where travel is important to the plot (tell us how) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in KYSTPILEGRIMSLEIA (3 word minimum).
11. St. Olav Waterway
This route starts from the Turku Cathedral in Finland. After 5 stops on the mainland, this pilgrimage includes another 6 stops through the Åland Islands, some of which involve the use of boats (the more adventurous can use a canoe or a kayak). Once you land in Sweden, you can use several local trails to reach Norway, but all make use of the Østerdalsleden. In the end the pilgrim will have traveled approximately 1200 km (746 mi).
✱ Read a series book #5 or #6 OR
✱ Read a book set in two or more countries (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book with over 1,200 reviews on its GR Homepage (share number).
12. Trondheim Cathedral
The final destination of the pilgrimage is Trondheim Cathedral, which was built starting in 1070 to house the remains of Saint Olaf. As we have already said, the mortal remains of the saint were lost after Norway embraced the Lutheran religion, but the cathedral continued to play an important role in Norwegian history. Saint Olaf is now venerated as a national hero and not as a saint. The Catholics still have their own cathedral dedicated to the holy king and consecrated in 2016; it is a replacement for a smaller church.
✱ Read a book where the MC visits a church (tell us why) OR
✱ Read a book published in 2016 (share publication date) OR
✱ Read the final/last book in a series (share series name).
