Audrey (niceyackerman) | 341 comments Lord of the Rings has a really slow start and slow ending but is beautiful writing and contains really suspenseful scenes. No sex or swearing.

Game of Thrones is grittier with lots of adult content and isn't finished.

So whichever sounds good, go for it.

Rafe Shaw | 4 comments The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings with the Tolkien Gateway website to help you.

Amanda (has no self-control re: books) (ajosephine) | 67 comments The thing is - and I don’t think I’m alone here - there currently is no ending to Game of Thrones, nor do we know if there will EVER truly be, so if that bothers you…

Whatever George R. R. Martin says, and whatever the rumor mill spits out, just remember he just keeps writing/editing and, not only that, he keeps taking on new projects! He has more money than he’ll ever need and the ending of the HBO series was already ruined bc the show surpassed the book material - that’s the legacy he’s leaving right now. House of the Dragon is on track to do exactly the same thing. How about we don’t buy the rights to anything that’s not complete? He’s set a terrible precedent.

Plus - without Tolkien we would have a vast hole in what we know literature today; so much is owed to him and just reading about him is fascinating. Lord of the Rings is challenging when you have to start flipping back and forth to the appendices - if you choose to, to understand the timelines/backstories, which I did, I have to know everything - but I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Thank you so much for this reply! I can't tell you how helpful this was. I thought I was leaning that direction anyway but after this informative comment I'm sure. thank you again!

Amanda (has no self-control re: books) (ajosephine) | 67 comments Haha, I’m so so glad to have helped. I wasn’t trying to be a downer, but I have important questions from Game of Thrones that I’m worried will never be answered…I feel for the people who are older than me who have REALLY been waiting.

This shouldn't even be a question: the Lord of the rings is way better. It's not like I don't like game of thrones, but everything that's been written after the lord of the rings has been already written by Tolkien.

~☆~Autumn | 1 comments I am guessing The Lord of the Rings is a classic?

message 12: by Michael (new)

Michael | 70 comments I prefer Game of Thrones. Even though it is unfinished I found the writing to be far more engaging than that of Tolkien, but that's just a taste thing because after 6 attempts I never managed to finish The Lord of the Rings.

Isabel ♡ (dinioskol) | 44 comments I found LotR excruciatingly boring. I understand that Tolkier is a groundbreaking author and A Song of Ice and Fire- and most of the Fantasy genre- wouldn't exist without him and his works. However, I do not care. LotR is a snoozefest.

J would never read Got. so bad

Jeremiah (GOOOOOOOO ISRAEL!!!) Lord of the Rings

message 23: by Saige (new)

Saige (lannister807) | 6 comments Depends how fast-paced of a series you want. I find LoTR really rewarding to read, but it's definitely not as quick/action packed as GoT

message 24: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (wearywanderer) | 179 comments Definitely prefer Lord of the Rings better. I find it such an evocative story. Also ... I like it because it's a fully finished series. I mean, JRR Tolkien wrote the entirety of the world he created.

Believe me, I like Game of Thrones. I do. I own them all as well ... but with no ending in sight and George RR Martin not really working on it full-time ... it's hard to like.

message 25: by Maia (new)

Maia | 4 comments Lord of the Rings for sure!

message 26: by Plume (new)

Plume | 56 comments Lord of The Rings 100%, but start with The Hobbit. It's a prequel and imo essential to read before LoTR. It also serves as an introduction to Middle Earth and some of the characters.
Just a heads up that LoTR is a book to be enjoyed slowly as it's very descriptive and beautifully told.

GoT is very long and unlikely to ever get completed.
