20.8 - Nickels & Dimes - MegSCL's Task: Getting to Know Seasonal Reading Challengers

Choose one of the following four options and read one book:
Required: Indicate the option.

1. Where do you live?
Read a book set in (at least 50%) the city or state/county/province where you currently live, or a book by an author who was born or currently lives in your city/state/county/province.
-must be based on the place you currently live, even if it's not where you are originally from
-alternate versions of the place are allowed (or past/future versions) as long as it IS the place, not just similar to the place
-if the author is deceased, you can use the place they were living at the time of their death
Required: state where you live and how the book fits the task. If using the author option the 카지노싸이트 profile should indicate the place or include a reference when you post.

2. What do you do for work?
Read a book in which the main character does a similar job to you or read a non-fiction book about your area of work. For example, if you are a teacher, read a book with a teacher as a main character or a non-fiction book about education.
If you’re not working, or you are retired, parenting, or studying; read a book where the main character is also not working, retired, parenting, studying, or in your situation. Or read a non-fiction book relevant to a former area of work or about your current situation (e.g. parenting, being in retirement etc.).
Required: state what you do and how the book fits the task

3. Do you have any pets or kids?
Read a book with a title (subtitles excluded) or author’s name (first, middle, or last) that includes your child’s or pet’s name. If you don't have children or a pet you may read a book with the word "None" in the title.
Words and names must stand alone and the spelling must match exactly, plurals and possessives are OK.
-first names only; no nicknames or middle names allowed
-past pets are allowed
Required: state the name/word and whether it belongs to a child, cat, dog or other pet

4. Stay anonymous
If you want to keep all this to yourself, that’s fine! Stay anonymous by reading a book which was authored by ‘Anonymous.’

Meg (megscl) | 2445 comments a few notes;

OPTION 1
-must be based on the place you currently live, even if it's not where you are originally from
-alternate versions of the place are allowed (or past/future versions) as long as it is the place, not just similar to the place
-if the author is deceased, you can use the place they were living at the time of their death
-country is not specific enough, must be a more local region

OPTION 3
-first names only; no nicknames or middle names allowed
-past pets are allowed

OPTION 4
-'Unknown' is not the same as 'Anonymous'

Morgan (faeriesfolly) | 923 comments If we use option 1 and go with where the author lives, is that the place we currently reside or the place we consider home ("your state")?

My state is WV, but I currently live in Maryland. If I think of home or "my state" it's WV. (Maryland clearly will have more options in either case, but my brain always wants to say WV even though I've been here 3 years.)

Probably a silly question, but the heat's out and I'm distracting myself moving things around. :P

Thanks!

Hi Morgan. It will have to be the place where you currently live. I think that the concept of 'home' is a bit too open to interpretation. I hope you get warmed up soon!

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3612 comments Can it be an alternative version of your home town? I'm in London, and there are a lot of steampunk and urban fantasy books set here which I wouldn't mind reading.

Yes, an alternative London is fine as long as it is clearly London. By that I mean it can't be a fantasy city similar to London but must actually BE London, even if it's not quite a real version of London. I hope that makes sense!

Yep. That makes sense. Thank you.

Sorry Erin, it has to be a first name. But thanks for the question, I'll make sure to clarify that in the task.

Yes main character is a teacher

Hi Teri, good question, but sorry no that won't work. In this task I am looking specifically at your job (or non-job situation) so that is the part that needs to match.

No problem, I just needed that clarification of which part was most important. Thanks.

LouLouReads | 221 comments Can I use a graphic novel or sequential comic book for this task, if they conform to other SRC requirements? I'm specifically wanting to read PhD Chapter 5: Adventures in Thesisland, which is all about PhD students & therefore well-matched to my current situation.

Sorry - that sounds like a great read, but I haven't allowed graphic novels/comics/manga for this task.

Understandable :)
I was half through a list I was making in my head of books by WV authors before I was like, "Waaaaaaaaaiiiiiiitttt .... you don't live there any more." lol. So I figured it was worth a shot. ;)
Maryland it is!

Ahh fair enough. In that case, at least I have a place to stick one of the tedious preparing-for-your-viva textbooks that I have to read anyway, right? :-)

Stephanie | 396 comments I am a student, and so am unemployed, and at the beginning of May I will not technically live anywhere...I am going to be traveling across the country and through Europe until the middle of August.

Will The Road by Cormac McCarthy work for this? It is post-apocalyptic, so they don't have a job and I believe just wander around.

Julia (julia103) | 2662 comments For Option 1, can the author live in the same state but a different city? I live in Baltimore Maryland. Elizabeth Peters lived in Frederick Maryland.

In typing this question I realized that the task says "an author who was born or currently lives in your city/state/county/province." If the author is deceased, can we use the place she was living at the time of her death in lieu of "currently living"?

Yes, another city in the same state is OK.
Good point on deceased authors. I am happy to use place at time of death in lieu of currently living.

Lulu (robotwitch) Can I use Nick Harkaway for London? He was born in Cornwall, but on his website (), down at the bottom of the 'about me', he references living in a house in London (the sentence is: "...and I still feel content and safe when a gale blows up and whistles around the corner of my home in London").

Is that enough to assert he's in London?

Hi Christine, Sorry I will have to say no to this! I read goodreads descriptions of the meanings of 'anonymous' and 'unknown' and they do have distinct meanings.

For option 2, the task says "similar job to you." How close do the jobs have to be to be "similar"? I'm a lawyer, can I read a book in which the MC is a judge? Higher up in the food chain, certainly, but overall same general line of work. Or, moving down the food chain, what about a law student?

Thanks!

Good question! I am happy for 'similar' to be flexible, so judge and lawyer are the same 'industry' and therefore acceptable. Law student on the other hand, I would say no, because the job/field of work is really 'student' rather than working in the law field. However, if a significant part of the story involves them participating in on the job training or interning, where they are actually out involved in real law practice (rather than just in the classroom), I would say yes. Hope that isn't too vague!
