I rated this book 3 stars. My review :
"Have you noticed...how difficult it is to be improper without men?”
I loved the opening of this book. Four women, strangers, team up to rent a castle in Italy for a month. The leave behind dreary London and demanding husbands. Unfortunately it didn't do much with this great set up. I kept getting distracted and losing interest in the story.

So: an unexpected 5 stars from me...
I did find my mind wandered a bit while I was reading, but it didn't matter to the story, so it was a bit like watching a relaxing TV show.
Edit: I'm happy The Thursday Murder Club was such a disappointment (and now on my dnf list), otherwise I would never have picked this up.

This actually ended up being the perfect book for my current state of mind and exhaustion. It is just so gentle and relaxing, and it doesn't demand much in the way of thought or reflection. The female characters were interesting, there was a lot of quiet humor, and there wasn't a lot of plot to keep up with.
I only gave it 3* because I feel like if I had been in my normal reading mode I would have found it too slow, but it was the right book at the right time for me. I'm actually curious about the movie!

All in all a good read with some issues, 3 stars from me too.

This is a book I never read for school, and despite working in a video store for 5 years I never saw the film either. But I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will likely watch the film in the near future, if only just for the lovely scenery.
Having the 4 women at different ages and/or stages of life was brilliant. It made things much more layered and interesting than if they were all single friends in their 20's. I found their reactions to things and ways they treated the castle staff to be fascinating.

I listened to the audio version and am grateful that at 1.5 speed, it wasn't too long. I was tempted to DNF this one, but muddled through with the SRC winding down. It didn't keep my interest and was a one-star read at best.

I did enjoy the language of the piece though. The descriptions were lovely and did invoke a feeling of the beauty of the moment and the place. Each of the women had their positives and negatives, I think I maybe liked Rose best for al her seeming confidence she was perhaps the most nerve racked underneath. But there wasn't a lot of actual character development so much as the insta-love of the place magically fixed their lives and brought love home to them.
Still I took this book at a leisurely pace and didn't force myself through any of it. It was enjoyable to read and I appreciated being able to knock off another classic that I never previously got around to reading.
