Ellen | 3451 comments Being the son of the Chief of the Hairy Hooligans Viking tribe has always put a lot of pressure on Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. He is expected to be brave in the face of all danger but Hiccup is quiet, thoughtful and has a big heart. Constantly bullied by some of the larger boys, Hiccup knows that he needs to find his backbone. The young boys of the tribe are about to enter the initiation phase of the Hooligan tribe. Step one is to capture a baby dragon. When Fishface, one of Hiccup's friends, is unable to catch one, Hiccup gives Fishface the one he had taken and then blindly reached out for another. What Hiccup got was a tiny, toothless dragon with a bad attitude. Step two is to train your dragon. Fortunately, Hiccup speaks Dragonese and can converse with "Toothless" who stubbornly refuses to cooperate unless Hiccup promises to tell jokes. The big initiation festival will test all of the boys and their dragons for obedience, performance and retrieving fish. It does not go well especially when an enormous sea dragon emerges from the salty depths to threaten all of the Hooligan tribe. Since Hiccup can speak the language he is the one selected to face the mighty behemoth. Will he be brave enough and save everyone?

This is such a cute and funny book. I have watched the movies and enjoyed them quite a lot so this was a treat to read. I can see why youngsters would like it.

Susie We LOVED this series. I had such fun reading it aloud and doing Viking accents.

Idit | 1028 comments I’m reading it now with my 8 years old. Just in chapter 3 so will take us few months.
So far it’s fun and I love how different it is than the movie (although no girls...)
