Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

Everyone is invited to join us in our Group Read for March & April.

**Please use spoilers when posting your comments.

Trevor Noah is one of the comedy world’s brightest new voices, a light-footed but sharp-minded observer of the absurdities of politics, race, and identity, sharing jokes and insights drawn from the wealth of experience acquired in his relatively young life. As host of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, he provides viewers in America and around the globe with their nightly dose of biting satire, but here Noah turns his focus inward, giving readers a deeply personal, heartfelt, and humorous look at the world that shaped him.

This collection of eighteen personal essays, tells the story of Trevor as a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. Born a Crime is equally the story of that young man’s fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that ultimately threatens her own life.

His stories weave together a moving and funny portrait of a lovable delinquent making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed with only a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.

Jan | 20406 comments I've heard nothing but great things about this book and am looking forward to it. I know several of you have already read this but I hope there are a couple members who will be joining me. I'll be listening to the audio.

Karen | 621 comments I've got The Goose Girl in audio next and then I'll join you. Also audio most likely. Especially since the reserve list for the book is a mile long in my library system. It sounds good. People love him on The Daily Show.

I would love a re read of this one but I just did it last year, I will try to jump in on comments if I can. I hope you guys love it!!!

It seems unlikely that the ENTIRE book would be free on You Tube.

Jan | 20406 comments BC - I know lots of people that find full length audio books on YouTube. But I never can seem to find the though.

Uhhhh you think me too tech savvy, Jan!

All I did was search “born a crime audiobook” and it came up right away. The first one that came up says full audiobook and I went for it :)

That’s how I listen to 90% of my audiobooks! You’d be surprised how many are on there :)

But if someone wants to check just to be safe....this said “full audiobook” and is 8 hours and 47 mins long. (And in the first few mins it says it came from Audible.)

Allison | 1001 comments Jan wrote: "Oh!! Comments?????"

I’m liking it more than I thought I would. Although I don’t think it would be the same book for me if I was actually reading it. It seems like I would get bored. But in audiobooks, narration is key and he’s the perfect narrator for his own work.

Really soothing voice to listen to as well.

Denise | 2854 comments We just had a huge wind storm and I haven't had internet connection for three days - so I only got to listen to Chapter 1. so far. I'm at the library doing some work on the computer but it's very frustrating not having easier access. Luckily enough another huge storm is to begin tomorrow night so who knows when I'll be back.
