Zaz | 2969 comments The seven deadly sins are a list of vices: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth. These sins are often excessive versions of normal abilities or passions.
The sin can be in the title or the content of the book.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I've never read Jane Austen so this is my year !

Pride and Prejudice

Lets see what all the fuss is about?

message 3: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments I plan to read Greed, Lust & Gender: A History of Economic Ideas, which sounds fascinating. But it will be a bit of work. If I need something lighter, I'll go with Eligible, a modernization of Pride and Prejudice. I don't generally like that sort of thing, but this has been recommended by a friend.

message 5: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3780 comments The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy. He has a personality prone to self-destructive pride and temper. Perfect for this week!

Thank you for sharing! I will check it out.

I read Eligible this year, and it was so, so funny. I'm not a big P&P fan, but this was a good light read.

The link for the GR shelf for greed isn't working for me. I'm not sure what's up?

Also, note that the Pride shelf has a lot of LGBTQ books for Pride, instead of it being about the deadly sin. Just wanted to give a heads up!

I had trouble finding books on the list that I wanted to read, but I have a funny feeling, I'll be reading books for other prompts and end up using one of them for this category. As it stands, I have these on my list:

A Christmas Carol (Greed)
The Corrections (Lust)
A Game of Thrones (Greed, Gluttony)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Wrath)

message 10: by Kara (new)

Kara (kara2u) | 13 comments Anne Zouroudi

She wrote a series of books set in Greece that are each based on one of the seven deadly sins. I've only read a couple, but I loved them! Will read another for this prompt.

Arielle Young | 34 comments Rachel wrote: "Would The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue work for this?"

That is the one I chose for this category!

message 12: by Mely (new)

Mely (mneg) | 28 comments I've had Lolita on my TBR for awhile. I'll be using it for lust.

Thank you for this! I was struggling to find books for this category, but now I'm tempted to use The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women!

Hope this is a good one! It had good reviews and was on my TBR for awhile.

I have it down for a few different categories, but this one was a hard one to fill so I may just use it for this one!

message 17: by Beth (new)

Beth | 146 comments I also have The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women on my TBR for the year and nothing for this category. Thanks for the idea!

Laura • lauralovestoread | 89 comments Glad to help! Happy reading :)

message 19: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristia) | 18 comments The Odyssey? Also do you have to read Iliad first? I really want to read Margaret Atwood's 'The Penelopiad for another prompt which is connected to The Odyssey - which is why I am trying to fit it in!

message 20: by Mel (new)

Mel | 176 comments I'm planning on reading The Water Knife because it seems like it tackles greed pretty well.

message 22: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Kristi, I’ve heard it’s recommended to read The Iliad first.

message 23: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Finished The Enormous Crocodile for AtYRC children edition, I consider the crocodile as greedy and glutton, so prompt checked. Still no decision made for my normal plan.

Rachel > I'm currently reading it and, for me, it's a yes or no, depending on how you want your sins. The main character is written as a depiction of lust, pride and sloth and considered as it by outsiders (in a current context, I wouldn't considerer him as all of these, especially with his background and personality, but for this time he's a sinner). So, it's up to you :)

Emily > sorry, an unfortunate copy/paste. It's fixed ;)

message 24: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristia) | 18 comments Thanks Jodi!

message 25: by Hellie (new)

Hellie | 35 comments Moby-Dick or, The Whale by Herman Melville
I'm tackling the wrath of Moby Dick. So far I'm really enjoying it.

message 26: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2276 comments I love historical romance, it's my not-really-very-guilty pleasure, and I don't often choose a romance novel for a Challenge category, so that's what I'm reading for this, whatever historical romance catches my eye when I'm ready to read a book for this category. Pretty much any historical romance is going to be about LUST!

message 27: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I plan on reading Revenge by Yoko Ogawa. I think it’ll fit in as “wrath”.

message 28: by Carol (new)

Carol | 67 comments Love these books about Pride

Jill Sanders - Red Hot Christmas (The Pride, #5) by Jill Sanders

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11021 comments Mod
I just finished The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty, which was off plan, but it fit so well in this category and I really needed a win in book choices so I went with it.

Lust and wrath, for sure!

message 30: by Conny (new)

Conny | 638 comments For thriller fans, I highly recommend Envy by Sandra Brown. One of her best, in my opinion.

message 31: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments - What are you reading for this category? The Picture of Dorian Gray
- Which sin did you choose? Pride - I didn't know anything about this book before the beginning of the year. My other group is doing it as a group read. I've read about a third of it. I'm really enjoying it. It is beautifully written. I like it when these surprise books come up that I don't know anything about. It also checks off a classic for the 12 I want to read this year.

message 32: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) | 542 comments What are you reading for this category?
The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women

Which sin did you choose?
Greed. Lots of men were willing to sacrifice the lives of these young women just to make more money.

message 33: by Shannan (new)

Shannan | 36 comments I'm currently reading Letters from the Earth: Uncensored Writings by Mark Twain and will likely use it for this topic. The first half of the book is letters written by Satan from Earth to the Archangels in heaven and he covers pretty much all the deadly sins in examining man's behavior. Definitely not for religious folks, but it's Twain's trademark biting wit and intelligent humor.

message 34: by Ann (new)

Ann S | 624 comments I just finished Let Him Go as a preread for book club. Not sure it will fly with them, but will try it. I decided it plugged into this prompt quite well. The vices being pride (family clans) and greed.

message 35: by Maris (new)

Maris (maristocratic) | 36 comments I chose to read Crooked Kingdom for this prompt. I think this book represents both greed and pride, so fits perfectly :)

message 36: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley Stoeger brzozowski | 42 comments I will be reading Curious Minds as the plot is based on a missing gold and the Federal Reserve (greed).

message 37: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (tricia_nelson) I read The Atomic City Girls by Janet Beard for this, as I felt it dealt with the deadly sin of Wrath. The book was well written and told the story of a lesser-known aspect of the race for the bomb and the effects on those working on it.

/book/show/3...

message 38: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments I'm reading Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan, an overblown, madcap parody of some obscenely rich people. There are some very funny moments here and obviously the sin is greed.

message 39: by Elise (new)

Elise (theblackhorizon) I was going to read another one by Emile Zola for this prompt, but ended up reading The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton with another group. It represents pride because Lily desires to fit in with upper-class society, but doesn't think that she needs to follow their cultural rules.

message 40: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3780 comments I'm reading an ARC of Macbeth by Jo Nesbø. I am pretty sure there is an element of greed in this book! Macbeth by Jo Nesbø

message 41: by Aine (new)

Aine | 179 comments What are you reading for this category?
Jennifer Government by Max Barry

What sin did you choose?
Greed - the greed of hyper-capitalism

message 42: by Hafsa | حفصہ (new)

Hafsa | حفصہ (vibingwithabook) Would Seven Ways We Lie by Riley Redgate count for this prompt?

Pamela | 2003 comments Mod
- What are you reading for this category? Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI
- Which sin did you choose? Greed. This book made me so upset and angry over what people did out of greed. Murder for gain is bad enough but in this book it is so cruel and horrid.

message 44: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments - What are you reading for this category?
Ponzi's Scheme: The True Story of a Financial Legend

Greed

The Bling Ring: How a Gang of Fame-Obsessed Teens Ripped Off Hollywood and Shocked the World

Greed/Envy? I think this book covers a few sins

message 46: by Emily (new)

Emily (momoftwins89) | 59 comments What are you reading for this category?
I read Lies You Never Told Me by Jennifer Donaldson

Which sin did you choose?
Mostly for envy, but you could probably add lust and wrath as well.

message 47: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleym99) What are you reading for this category?
I read Pride and Prejudice.

Which sin did you choose?
Pride

message 48: by Anna (new)

Anna | 1007 comments What are you reading for this category?

Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett deals with several of the 7 deadly sins, although mostly with pride, greed and wrath.

Judgement in Death by JD Robb.
The deadly sin in this case would be wrath.

- Which sin did you choose? Gluttony

message 50: by Pam (new)
