This thread is open to discuss A Twist in Time by Julie McElwain.

Synopsis

Former FBI agent Kendra Donovan’s attempts to return to the twenty-first century have failed, leaving her stuck at Aldridge Castle in 1815. And her problems have just begun: in London, the Duke of Aldridge’s nephew Alec—Kendra’s confidante and lover—has come under suspicion for murdering his former mistress, Lady Dover, who was found viciously stabbed with a stiletto, her face carved up in a bizarre and brutal way.

Lady Dover had plenty of secrets, and her past wasn’t quite what she’d made it out to be. Nor is it entirely in the past—which becomes frighteningly clear when a crime lord emerges from London’s seamy underbelly to threaten Alec. Joining forces with Bow Street Runner Sam Kelly, Kendra must navigate the treacherous nineteenth century while she picks through the strands of Lady Dover’s life.

As the noose tightens around Alec’s neck, Kendra will do anything to save him, including following every twist and turn through London’s glittering ballrooms, where deception is the norm—and any attempt to uncover the truth will get someone killed.

maria helena (mariahel) | 1916 comments Chapter 5

Compared to the first book, I think this one is starting a bit slow. (view spoiler) I'm hoping it will pick up the pace soon.

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1386 comments I'll start to read today. Sorry!

No worry. I haven't gotten that far.

maria helena (mariahel) | 1916 comments What is your first impressions of the book?

(view spoiler)

message 11: by MelanieJoy (new)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1386 comments I'm in chapter 5 right now. Sorry it's so slow!

I'm intrigued by the writing style; it's very believable so far. I'm curious to see where I get impatient with the plot since you said it was slow. My first impression is good because I'm reading it via hardback book, and I'm enjoying the slow pace during public transportation and my slow breaks. It gives me time to digest the sights and sounds described. (view spoiler) I'm only in chapter 5 though, so we'll see! I'm at the very least intrigued!

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1386 comments Finished chapter 9

I can see what you mean. The book's pace is very slow. I'm enjoying it so far but hopefully it'll feel like it picks up. I wonder what makes it a big book...

maria helena (mariahel) | 1916 comments I agree with your comment about the reason for Kendra's behavior (but I liked the "old" Kendra better).

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1386 comments Finished chapter 20
It's starting to get interesting!
(view spoiler) Honestly I'm intrigued by it. I'm enjoying (view spoiler) I can see how it moves slowly, but I wonder if that is to set up all the suspects and such. I can see how the slow pace can get boring, but there's a lot of building the setting and connecting to the reader's understanding of the 1800s that she's doing that helps me really be there. So far so good for me. But yes the storyline and pace and suspense was probably better in the first one.

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1386 comments Finished! What are your thoughts?

maria helena (mariahel) | 1916 comments MelanieJoy wrote: "Finished! What are your thoughts?"

Even thought there were some things that I liked (like the kidnapping), I thought the book was moving too slow, and I didn't actually like Kendra's inner dialogue. Maybe I was not in the right mindset to read this one right now (and I kept comparing it with the first book and not liking it as much).

message 17: by MelanieJoy (new)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1386 comments Interesting thoughts. I was pre-disposed to like it because I had liked the first one and I really wanted to be involved with Kendra. Honestly her inner dialogue helped make her believable for me. When I can't understand the mindset of some characters, they feel less realistic and believable. I understood Kendra; didn't always agree with her but I understood her. And the book kept bringing new evidence which made me go back and forth between who I thought committed the murder. (view spoiler) All in all, I honestly really enjoyed it. Sorry you didn't!

maria helena (mariahel) | 1916 comments It's interesting when we have the opposite opinions about the same things in the book :-)

Hopefully I like the next book we buddy read a lot more.

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1386 comments It is interesting! I definitely was thinking along the same vein as you when we read The Travelers by Chris Pavone and it neither of our favorite that year, haha.

I had completely forgotten about that one! I just remember being so frustrated while we were reading that.
