Around the Year in 52 Books discussion

Welcome!

We'll read (more or less) one book each week, all along the year. You can't change the topics, but you're free to choose whatever book you're interested in for each category.

It's better if you create your own plan (using "create a new topic" and choosing "2017 Plans" for the folder) so you can keep track of your progress and share your choices with the other members. If you need help to find ideas, you can have a look at the suggestions or ask in the Off Topic folder.

You can read in order or jump around, but keep this order in the plan, as we are using the numbers to find quickly a topic.

If you can't complete the challenge, it's not a problem. If one topic is really too much out of your comfort zone or too much difficult to fulfill, you can use the Wild Card and read something else for this week (reader's choice or past suggestions).

Don't forgot to add your books in the A-Z folders (using the 1st letter of the title) and to tell us what you read in the Progress Posts.

How do I create a new topic?

Go to the 2017 folder: /topic/group...
Then you have a "new topic" link at the top right.

Do we start on January 1st?

Yes, the first week begins January 1st.

Exciting, hoping to read books in order this year as I'm starting on day 1!! Just a question when is the 2017 A-Z open is this Jan 1st?

I've gone through planning the first quarter, am saving up the rest of my pledge reads for cold and wet winter days.

Wend, we'd like to avoid having posts for the 2017 categories and then late posts for the 2016 ones (in the same book topic), so probably on January 1. We'll do an announcement + change the dates in the header to indicate when things are opened :)

how many wild card I have?

Normally one. You can choose to not complete the whole challenge if it's too much for you, but it's better to just remove one annoying/difficult category rather than several of them if you read the 52 books.

Question: For the title with no E are we counting the word "the" if it starts the title? like "The Martian"?

Personally, I would count it and wouldn't use that title. But different members are more or less strict with what they include so others may allow it. It's really up to you :)

What if you finish a book before the week is up? Are you allowed to read on and go on to your next read? Just checking. Thanks!

Shauna, definitely. You don't even have to read in order if you don't want to. It's all up to you.

As a Finn, I would like to point out that Finland is in fact not part of Scandinavia. :D It gets confusing, I know. Here's a thing!

Okay, nitpick over. Cool categories. Will have to start thinking about what to do for them.

Saara, it's kind of in Scandinavia, no? Just the "Fenno" thing is added at the front :D
The goal of the prompt is to read something Nordic, so with Finland included, people have more choices :)

Thank you for sharing that, Sara! I never realised that Finland wasn't part of Scandinavia- that page was really interesting, as we're done of the comments. :)

Of course Stephanie, you're free to choose whatever you want. The suggestions are here to give you inspiration and show you what type of books can be used to fill each category. Only the prompts based on a specific list have a finite number of books to choose from.

You'll see, were really open with our members and won't bother you if you interpret prompts more freely than other members ;)

For topic 15 (a book written or set in Scandanavia) I would recommend The Core of the Sun. I read this for the 2016 challenge as a book originally written in another language and really enjoyed it. It's about a future dystopian Scandinavia/alternate history.

I am having a difficult time finding out if books on my TBR have more than one POV. I know that most Fantasy and Sci-Fi books do, but most do not list in the synopsis if they have more that POV.

How is everyone else handling this prompt? Help!

Anastasia, you can have a look at the ebook sample (on Amazon, you can check online, no need to download), if the chapters aren't too long, you can have a look at the POV.

I never thought of that. So silly I have used that same idea for other reasons, LOL.

For Week 6: a book being released as a movie in 2017, I have a couple of books in mind, but the release date for the movies is around Christmas 2016. They will still be in theatres in the new year, so technically, would they qualify?

Nothing on the most recent 2017 movie release lists (from Oct) has interested me. Does anyone have a more updated list for reference?

Stacey, as Zaz answered to you here, you can stretch the prompt a bit and count movies that are released in other countries in 2017, like A Monster Calls.

I've audio previews on GR but no ebook ones (it's probably a "near/in US only" feature).

That's cool! I just came on here to ask if A Monster Calls would count, since I live in the UK and it's being released here on January 1st, and I really want to read the book and see it :)

I might have to make this my first book so I can read it before I see the movie.

I just googled books with multiple perspectives.

Does it count if a book meets more than one challenge? Or do I have to read two different books that meet both challenges?

Lauren > usually it's a 52 books challenge, so 1 book per category. If you don't read enough in a year, you can do a reduced challenge, rather than counting 1 book for several categories :)

I had to laugh at the movie based on a book that was never written, I Am Not Your Negro. Um, not sure that really counts as a book to movie adaptation but OK. lol

Thanks for the list though. I had trouble coming up with one 2017 book to movie adaptation to read and now I need TWO for two separate challenges. I can use all the help I can get on that topic!

I just re-read that in the list, Amy. Pretty funny. So, does that even qualify as a book? It's more of an "as told to" tale. Meanwhile, I chose Silence for my Week 6, which is due to open in limited US release in two days (wide release on 1/6), but have seen no trailers - nothing - about it so far. Very weird.

I am going to try join in on this one :)
