Please post your general questions about the Summer 2014 challenge here. Specific questions about individual tasks should be posted in the Help Threads for those tasks.

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I just wanted to clear up a question about the challenge :

I have listed all the categories so far posted. I understand there are other tasks yet to be listed at a later date .

I'm trying to make sure I have all the "extras" listed --
Group reads --you get points for reading them ,and all you need to do is post a comment in the appropriate thread ? or also post the book in a different area too ?

We get bonus points for GoodReads Authors ,for any book read ?
Do we post them at the time we post the book for the task or elsewhere ?

Big Books --also do they get posted in the task they are for, or a separate place ?

Am I missing any extra point tasks ?

Sorry for all the Dingbat questions -- just didn't want to miss anything for my first try at this .

GREAT JOB to the people who put this together and all the ideas for summer . This should be fun !

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11182 comments Welcome to the challenge, Kaye!

Re Group Reads: In order to get points for the Group Reads, you must read the book and make at least one comment about the contents of the book or your reaction to the book in the appropriate Group Reads Discussion Thread.

To get points for any book (including a Group Read), the completed task must be claimed in the Completed Tasks thread, including all required information. The Summer Completed Tasks thread hasn't been set up, yet, since the challenge doesn't start until June 1. For more about posting completed tasks, please see Posting Requirements and General Guidelines for Posting

Re 카지노싸이트 Authors: 카지노싸이트 authors (GRA) are specific authors who have signed up with the 카지노싸이트 Author program. In the upper right-hand corner of a GRA profile, you will see a black circle with a white G and the words 카지노싸이트 Author - see Cassandra Clare for an example. Other authors have light grey words that just say Author profile - see Nora Roberts for comparison. You post GRA claims when you claim the book.

Re Big Books: You also claim Big Book tickets when you claim the book. For both GRA and Big Books, you must specifically say you are claiming those tickets in your post. When we review books, we're looking for the words "카지노싸이트 Author," "GR author," or "GRA" or "Big Books ticket" or "BB ticket" in your post. Updating a tally at the bottom of your is NOT enough. See #4 in General Guidelines for Posting for a template for the best way of handling GRA and BB ticket requests.

Hope that helps! If you have other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks Kristi
Yep, that info was all explained very clearly, it does help !
Thank you for your time -- I won't start reading til the 1st. Just writing down all the tasks and looking for books on all the web pages listed to find books that will fit into the slots .
You guys are GOOD --some great ideas listed . It keeps my brain cells from corroding faster . :)

Can a group read book also be claimed for a 5 point task ? I have one that'd work for both .
Thank you !

You can only claim a book once in the challenge. So, while you can certainly use a group reads book for a different task, you would then need to read a different group reads book for the 20 point task.

Ok, thanks, Sandy !

message 8: by Fandury (new)

Fandury | 957 comments After having spent quite some time looking through my TBR-list to find books for Ty's task, I stumbled upon a question.

As I read mostly ebooks, I have to check for the MMP or paperback version for the pagecount. I know that I have to use the paperback version if there is no MMP, but which paperback version should I use then? ALways the most popular one, or the one with the same cover as the Kindle version I have?

For example:

I have this kindle version:

The Secret Rooms A True Gothic Mystery by Catherine Bailey

The most popular paperback version is
The Secret Rooms A True Story of a Haunted Castle, a Plotting Duchess, and a Family Secret by Catherine Bailey

As this has a page count of 425 this would not fit Ty's task.

But there is also a paperback version with the same cover as the Kindle version I have:

The Secret Rooms A castle filled with intrigue, a plotting Duchess, and a Mysterious Death by Catherine Bailey

As this has 480 pages, this would work.

I have no problem to use always the most popular version, but I do not want to limit my choices if I don't have to.

I'm curious about your review contest :
Do most of the people write reviews for the challenge books they read, and do you get bonus points for writing a review ?
Also, would all of your reviews get put into the review contest ,or only reviews people submit here at the end, like they just did this week ?
Thanks -

People write reviews if they feel like it, and there are no bonus points for it. You can submit one review in the season, to be considered in the voting.

We've talked this through, and think that the best way to do this is, if there's no MMPB edition listed, to use the most popular paperback edition, based on which has the most ratings.

If you click on "all editions" on the book page, you can filter by paperback and then sort by ratings. The top listing is the one you should use.

writing reviews can be fun, but it's time consuming. I usually can't get inspired to write a review of most of the books I read, but if I found the book particularly helpful or intriguing, or if I really disliked something about the book, then I find it more interesting to write one. Not for SRC purposes, but just in general.

Susan A | 1633 comments I have difficulty with determining whether or not a children's book is a transitional book.

Are Newbery Award winners acceptable, or is that sometimes yes, sometimes no?

Specifically:
Does this book work for a 15 pt task?

Call It Courage

From amazon:

Publication Date: March 20, 2012 | Age Level: 10 - 14 | Grade Level: 5 - 9

If the answer is yes, should I include a link to this post in the post when I report it read?

Thanks for your help.

***I've posted a million questions in the past few days. I'm one of those who likes to plan out the challenge before hand. I very much appreciate all of the moderators and task writers efforts in answering these questions.

After talking this over with the other moderators, the census is that yes, Call It Courage is OK for a 15-point task.

In response to your general question about Newbery Award winners the answer is: it depends on the specific book.

I have the hardcover version on order at my library
Lost States 160 pgs

The paperback version of this book
Lost States: Real Quests for American Statehood is listed at 94 pages

Is this book okay for a 15 pt task, as long as I post the hardback version that I intend to read?

If you read the hardcover edition include the link to that edition.
But always check book details to make sure the GR data matches when you have the book in hand (and that you receive the edition you requested from the library- covers, page numbers, etc don't always come in as expected)

Susan A | 1633 comments Will do.

None of that occurred to me. Good to order these things early then.

message 19: by Tesla (new)

Tesla Fields (teslafields) | 16 comments If there is not a specific page requirement for a task then does that mean the page length of the book is free game? I'm asking because there are a couple of books that are 90-150 pages that I'm considering, but I'm just not used to reading books that short.

message 20: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8876 comments the minimum pg count for tasks is 100pgs - however, you can use one conditional book (between 80-100pgs) for a 5 point task (or something like that)

Yes, I see that under Rule #3 there is this proviso:
One book between 80 -99 pages may be used for ONE 5 point task.

QUESTION - does this include books with "childrens" or "kids" on main page? I'm thinking specifically of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Thanks, Dee ... but I would like one of the moderators to answer this question officially - because it is a "CHILDREN'S" book ... and the "children's" rule states it must be 100+ pages.

1 book that's 80-99 pages can be used for a 5 point task. Since we allow 100 page children's books for 5 point tasks, this falls within that loophole.

Lee McLean-Houle (leemcleanhoule) Hi all
This is my very first foray into this and I am looking forward to it even though it seems very daunting.

When I go to the tasks and then the help thread under the first one (for instance) people there are posting books they are going to read. Is that what I am supposed to do? And they posted them there 2 weeks ago and I understand the challenge does not start until June 1? What am I missing?

Thanks for reading and answering!

Lee

Welcome, Lee.
The posts in the help threads are to check to make sure that a planned book works. You do not have to get books pre-approved in the help thread, but you may want reassurance that a book will work and that you understand what kind of book the task needs.
SRC Explained and Getting Started may answer some of your questions.

You're correct that the challenge doesn't start until June, so you can't start reading books for the summer challenge until then, with the exception of reading up to half of a book that's over 500 pages.

But, as soon as the tasks start being posted for the next season, many people like to start planning what they'll read - particularly helpful if you need to get on the list at the library to get a specific book.

The day that the first bunch of new tasks get posted is pretty exciting around here!

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

The rules say that "plays or books of poetry may be combined to reach the 100 page minimum."

Am I correct in thinking that if I combine to hit the 100 page limit, everything I combine has to meet the task requirements? Or can I read one play that fulfills the task requirements, and then whatever other play I want to make up the remaining pages?

I don't have any specific task in mind at the moment, I've just wondered this in the past and never got around to asking.

message 36: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8876 comments If you use multiple plays/poetry to meet the task requirement - they all have to fit the task

message 37: by Karen (new)

Karen Is there a minimum requirement of completed tasks or points? I feel faint after reading that task list. No way I can do all those! Are we in competition with each other or ourselves? You really put the effort in here. seems fun, but overwhelming until I get in the groove.

message 38: by Lindsey (last edited Jun 01, 2014 03:25PM) (new)

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 498 comments Nope, you can score only 5 points for the entire season, and you will still be listed on the readerboard (scoreboard) for that season. It's mostly a competition with yourself. The only way it's a competition with others is the race to have the highest score by the midpoint of the challenge; that person gets to design the 50 point task. Of course, it's up to you to choose if you want to try to achieve this or not. Also, everyone's scores are listed on the readerboard throughout the challenge season, so you can compare yourself to others. It's totally up to you how much weight/attention you give to individual or competition against others. Don't worry, you will get the hang of the challenge eventually. It's well worth it; it's so fun!

absolutely not. Look at the Readerboard from Spring - no way most people finish. And I suppose how you compete depends on you - but I think you'll have more fun with it if you compete with yourself. Maybe challenge yourself to read a couple books outside your normal reading comfort zone, or to read a certain number of books or pages.

I can assure you that there are no big $$$ prizes here!!!

Susan, the book has to be located on GR for the mods to verify that it meets task requirements. I do not know in general about unpublished books...but ARCs are allowed. I guess I would need to defer to a mod review for the unpublished book issue.

Yes, free on-line reads can work for SRC tasks. Watch for serialized works: it needs to be complete, not in-process. And they need ebook verification like any other work without a print edition. You may want to get that done before you start reading in case issues come up.

message 46: by Fandury (new)

Fandury | 957 comments I think as long it is considered published by 카지노싸이트 standards, that it will be allowed.

Last infos what is considered published according to Rivka is this:

Posted on a fic site does constitute self-published by 카지노싸이트 standards. And the guidelines for fics continue to be only completed works, no WIPs (works-in-progress, i.e., incomplete fics).

Alt-POV chapters and other extras are not generally complete stories. However, when they are released as independent ebooks (e.g. Kindle editions), we allow them.

So I think if it is a official finished Story on a website, and so can be entered into 카지노싸이트, the mods will allow this (depending on word count approval).

But I think this is something the mods have to decide.

Vicky (librovert) | 240 comments I'd like to read The Kraken King by Meljean Brook this challenge. It is being released as an e-serial in 8 parts, the last of which will be out tomorrow.

There will be a paperback release eventually - but the dates on 카지노싸이트 are incorrect. The author expects it to release in Late Fall/Winter.

What's the best way to go about recording this to make it easy for the mods? Should I get ebook verification for it and list all the parts when I complete the task?
