Kate S | 6459 comments Celebrating authors who served in their country's military.

20.1 Veterans

In honor of Veterans Day/Remembrance Day/Armistice Day, read any author who has served in his/her nation's armed forces. All authors for this task must be approved prior to claiming this task for points or combos.
Some ideas, who are pre-approved:

20.2 Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl-(1916-1990) was a WWII flying ace. Better known for his children's fiction, he also wrote short fiction for adults, many of which were adapted to film. Read any short story collection or anthology that includes a short story that has been adapted to film, or read a novella of fewer than 150 pages that has been adapted into a film. Your link for the movie qualifier will need to be in the task help thread, not in the completed tasks thread, and please also include the title and author of the book you will claim..

20.3 Poets

Wilfred Owen (1893-1918), recognised as one of the leading poets of the First World War, died in service in 1918, almost a week before Armistice was signed. And ee cummings (1894-1962) was an ambulance driver in WWI before becoming an eminent poet. Read a book of poetry by one of these OR OR .

20.4 Evelyn Waugh

Evelyn Waugh-(1903-1966) served as a commando with the British forces in WWII. He is considered by many to be the greatest satirical novelist of his day. Read one of the top 125 from this list There Ought to be a Band on which is found his novel Vile Bodies.

20.5 John dos Passos

John dos Passos-(1896-1970) volunteered for the S.S.U. 60 of the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps. He is considered to be one of the Lost Generation, a term originating with Gertrude Stein to describe those who fought in World War I. The members of the lost generation were typically born between 1883 and 1900. Read a book by an author born between 1883 and 1900.

20.6 John Buchan

John Buchan-(1875-1940) was simultaneously a best-selling author, war correspondent and uniformed officer in the Intelligence Corps, WWI. Read any work by an author who has worked as a journalist. For suggestions, see the .

20.7 The Long Con: Louise Bro's Task

20.8 J.D. Salinger Amanda's Task

J.D. Salinger was drafted into the army during WWII. Read a book by an author who publishes using their initials rather than first name.

20.9 Edgar Allen Poe Kate's Task

Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849)-served in the US Army 1827-1829. In honor of his Dark Romanticism style, read a book with one of the following words related to the genre in the title: Satan, devil(s), ghost(s), werewolf (ves), vampire(s), or ghoul(s).
