25.3 Sirena's task: Hey Baby, It's Cold Outside...So Pick a Side!
This is a two book task. I flipped heads and so my alliance is USA. I chose option 3 and option 4.

Book 1 – option 3 - Read a fiction or non-fiction book with the main page genre "Espionage".

My word is "Hanging". HANGING Woman Creek
This is book is fiction.

Terri FL (territhemuse) | 615 comments 20.2 - Rookie at the Top - Karen D's task: The Cameron Crazies

Option 1 Cover is primarily Duke (dark blue)

Read The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta. Cover looks quite dark blue to me.

The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta

25.13 - M1nks's task: Art Can Set You Free

Option 3 - Celebrates human artistry

Read The $12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art by Don Thompson. This whole book was about many aspects of contemporary art. While you may end up not agreeing with the astronomical prices of what may seem like crap (sometimes literally), it certainly celebrates modern and contemporary artists and the art they create.

Option 4 - Struggle for freedom of the individual from an oppressive society.

Read The Sea Wolf by Jack London. Though the 'society' in this book may seem small, being just aboard a ship, it was the whole society for the sailors and main character for quite a long time. The main character, Humphrey, definitely struggles against it, first because he was taken captive against his will, and then even more so after he quickly realizes how the captain, Wolf Larson, was a horrible, brutal tyrant. His struggle to regain his freedom by any way possible, from escape all the way to considering murder, is the essence of this story.

I wasn't sure whether a ship would be considered its own society, but, everything I read seemed to conclude that it was. The ship was a sealing ship, similar to a whaling ship. This quote was from the Whaling Museum website - "Learn about the isolated society and daily life aboard a whaleship."

The Sea Wolf was first published in 1904, so, I claim 1 Golden Oldie ticket.

Thank you to all the moderators for your hard work and making sure we have this fun challenge!

30.6 - Donna Jo's task: Winter in Iowa circa 1950s
Chose 2 books, using 2 different options. The two books combined should have a total of at least 500 pages.

1. Read a book with one of the following words in the title (title only, no subtitles): Cold, Snow, Ice, Freeze, or Frozen. Plurals and the endings -er, -est, or -ing will work. No other variations are allowed.

Fury of Ice - Kindle - Furie de Glace - paperback pgs. 456 by Coreene Callahan
"Ice"

Fury of Ice (Dragonfury, #2) by Coreene Callahan

2. Read a book written by an author whose first and last name have initials in the phrase "DRESSING WARMLY". Letters may be in any order, but may only be used as many times as they appear in the phrase (i.e., the only letters that can be used more than once are R and S). Multiple authors are fine as long as at least one author has initials found in the phrase.

Embrace the Darkness - kindle Viper - paperback pgs. 416 by Alexandra Ivy

DressIng Warmly

416 + 456 = 872

Embrace the Darkness (Guardians of Eternity) by Alexandra Ivy

20.1 Most Improved - Megan W's task: (Super)Heroes

Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis by Timothy Egan

Option 2 - Heroic character
I find Edward Curtis, the subject of the book, to be heroic because of his perseverance and devotion over thirty years to his vision of “capturing on film the Native American nation before it disappeared.” It was a monumental anthropological task! Against all odds (but at the cost of his family and friends) he was successful, but yet died penniless, in creating “one of America's most stunning cultural achievements.”
