25.6 - Elizabeth B's Task: Sochi 2014 - Hot. Cool. Yours.

The XXII Olympic Winter Games are scheduled to take place 7 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi, Russia

Read 2 books

Each book should be set for at least 50% of the book in one of the countries participating at the Winter Olympics. (see post 2 for countries as the list in the link is subject to change)


~You may not choose a book set in the country you are currently living in.

~You must select countries from 2 different continents. Use this list to determine continents: i.e. Russia = Europe, Uzbekistan = Asia, etc.

Required: Include the name of the country where you’re currently living when you post.
Identify the book's setting if it is not obvious in the book's GR description

cool task and hopefully a way for me to knock a couple more countries off my around the world journey

Is my phone acting wacky? The link doesn't take me to a list of participating countries

i'm seeing it Susan - it might be your phone - its a wikipedia page

Ill check at home. I see the page and number of countries participating but no link to list of countries

the full list is towards the bottom of the page - try scrolling down

Susan from your phone open The Games link and you can see the participating commitees

If anyone is having trouble finding books that fit, you can search Listopia by just typing in the name of the country. I found a lot that would fit the task that way!

there is also this group - /group/show/... - it has threads for each of the countries...personal pet peeve (view spoiler)[was the author of all those country listopia's went through this group and took all the work of members to make them, then posted about them in the group (hide spoiler)]

Congratulations Elizabeth - nice task. I just want to clarify that it is OK that one of the countries is on the same continent that you live, right? I live in the US and wanted to use Canada for one of my books

Thanks Sheila! Yes, you can use Canada or any other country in America except of the US. And then you should find another country from a different continent.

I decided to go with 2 other books. If one book is set in both Canada and Japan......do I just choose the country I'd like to use it for?

At least 50% of the book should be set in the country you're going to use it for.

Sorry Deborah, Malaysia is not one of the participating countries. The first book is OK.

It looks like the list on Wikipedia got an update, there are 83 countries listed now and there were definitely 40-some last time I checked!

i think someone went in and edited that...according to stuff I can find only 35 countries have qualified - not the 80 some listed

It's not finalized yet, 35 is awfully low. The Vancouver games in 2010 had 82 nations participate.

The Two Hotel Francforts take place in Portugal. I assume this will work for one book?

ok i am a little dense, but Portugal is not on the above list. Does this mean Portugal is not going to participate in the Olympics?
