I first read it at ... 9? I hadn't re-read it in some years. I do recall that when I first read it I had no idea what was happening in "There Shall Come Soft Rains"; I had never heard of the concept of "nuclear shadows." I realized this time what a magnificent short story it is.

Angle of Repose
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
My Antonia
Gilead A Novel
Cold Sassy Tree
The Poisonwood Bible
Life of Pi

City of God A Novel of Passion and Wonder in Old New York by Beverly Swerling - the latest in her historical fiction series chronicling the lives of families in New York (this one takes place during the years leading up to the civil war)
The Virgin Queen's Daughter by Ella March Chase (historical fiction about the possibility that Queen Elizabeth i.e. The Virgin Queen wasn't quite so virginal and actually had a daughter)

I'm so impressed! I'm still working on it.!

Sort of recent five stars:
The Book Thief
Skeletons at the Feast

((Kind of over the top feminist, and reads like a women's lib book more than a fantasy novel... but it's still extremely enjoyable none the less))
First, let me say this is a great idea for a thread!
Seond, I am going to post a link to my Far Better Than Most shelf here, which is where I place all my 5 stars.

im like Fiona i feel guilty about 2s and 3s have only given about 3 x 1stars (the poor people probably took years to write em lol) - however ive also recalibrated recently and my fives now have to be really really special - theres a lot more in the 4s now lol
my recents:
The Hours
The God of Small Things
The Bone People
The Joy Luck Club(actually ive been having palpitations over whether to drop this down to a four, but feel too mean as i loved the film so much and am convinced it was only cos i allready knew the story/script so well that it took the edge off the book for me, i think it would have been unquestionable 5 if i was completely new to it - what to do!
oh where was I
Middlesex
Music & Silence/rose tremain
To Kill a Mockingbird

The Loop, The Loop . . . that may be my next one . .
