The provides a unique experience, as the tender and engaging narrator adds something to the impactful story of Lily.

One of the areas in which the book shines is its characterization. The development of the characters of Lily and Kath is well-executed. The themes of love, identity, and resilience are interwoven throughout the entire book, and the story makes you feel connected to the characters and their struggles. The book also does a nice job of underlining the intersectionality of Lily’s identities as a lesbian and Chinese-American.
Listen:

Something that might be hard for some people is the pace. At times it can be slow, which is particularly difficult for listeners, when there are pages about historical facts. While it was enriching details, I think some people will think it was a slog. Also, depending on how familiar you are with the time period, it may take a bit to adjust to the cultural norms, and signals of the time.

Overall, I liked the audiobook for the richness of its emotional depth!
