Hallelujah Junction: Composing an American Life

John Adams has given us a wonderful memoir of his life to date. He describes the circumstances of composing each piece, his thoughts on the composition and other details. He talks about music, both in general, such as the transition from Romantic to 20th century music, and specifically, about the differences in how the orchestra players respond to his music. I particularly enjoyed the chapters about the music scene in San Francisco and Oakland (Mills College) in the 1970s.
