This is a very boring book to read. But so encouraging, and helpful as a new artist. Or potentially even any type of artist.

It gives ideas on how to make being an artist profitable for you. But it also dispels the myth that to be a successful and true artist that you have to be poor or suffer. It says that sometimes you might find that doing other types of art will make you valuable money while you are making your masterpieces. Or that there are other jobs you can do as an artist to make some money to keep you afloat.
It is extremely practical giving information about even boring things like how many pixels to scan and print to. How to contact people, how to turn down requests on your time, how to choose work to accept, how to write artist statements etc. and usefully she not only gives you information to make your own choices about things, such as printers to use, but she will also say this is what i use. So if you really dont get it, you can just go with what she does, initially at least. ...more

The thoughts in it are perfection, it helps make art accessible, and for me was great because it is along my line of thinking about art, and how i've been trying to educate and express my thoughts on art through my blog on art-thunk.co.nz. It has helped to clarify to me a lot of my thinking, and has refined several thoughts that seemed a bit convoluted.
Quite a good place to start in the art world. However i always think a book about art with only black and white images is dumb being that so much of aQuite a good place to start in the art world. I also thought i would have liked more picture examples of what she was talking about as some of the artists i didnt know.
The layout of the book was great. 2 pages for each idea. And a timeline running along the bottom of the first page of each idea. Plus a few quotes, the basic condensed idea laid out at the end, and some boxes with more information.
As i say a great place to start, and a good overview. I would encourage people not to stop here though. ...more

I have trouble with landscapes so reading the little notes is really useful for me. Im reading another nz landscapes book also with notes about each painting and im getting the sense that meaning isn't important in the artworks, which has always been what I have issues with in landscape art. ...more
