This was a very nice collection, all things considered. Tbh I’m not a fan of Bécquer’s classical style of writing, but certainly can’t deny the value of some of his ideas, or the way he carries them to completion. Also surprised by a notable degree of versatility, in this collection mostly fiction, but sometimes also borderline horror, and even fairy taley, if nothing else. Or maybe this was just an excellent compilation nailed by the editor. Anywho, kudos to both.
Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh.

Una colección de cuentos cortos por Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, uno de los más grandes escritores españoles del siglo XIX.
Esta fue una colección muy interesante, considerando todo. Sinceramente, no soy un fanático del estilo clásico de escritura de Bécquer, pero ciertamente no puedo negar el valor de algunas de sus ideas, o la forma en que las lleva a completitud. Sorprende también su notable versatilidad, en esta colección mayormente ficción, pero también a veces terror, e incluso estilo cuento de hadas, si no es que más. O tal vez esto fue sólo una excelente compilación realizada por el editor. De cualquier modo, felicitaciones a ambos.
Ir por lo Mejor, considerar lo Bueno, loquesea lo Meh.

At a shanty house in a humble neighborhood of Sevilla, a small-town festival takes place. An anonymous tourist arrives and, moved and inspired by the merry scene, starts drawing a sketch of the lead chorus singer, the young and charming Amparo, adopted daughter of the local innkeeper.
This was nice, very nice, tragic nice in that special way of Marquez or Allende. As always the extensive overly descriptive style of Bécquer threw me off but gratefully, by now, I've learned to automatically and swiftly skim like a bandit, which helps, A LOT. Still good. Very good. Recommendable.

En una casa precaria de un barrio humilde de Sevilla, se celebra una fiesta pueblerina. A esto llega un turista anónimo que, conmovido e inspirado por la alegre escena, se pone a dibujar un boceto de la cantante principal del coro, la joven y encantadora Amparo, hija adoptiva del posadero local.
Esto estuvo bien, muy bien, trágico bien en esa manera especial de Márquez o Allende. Como siempre el estilo de escritura extenso y sobredescriptivo de Bécquer me desconcertó, pero afortunadamente, para estas alturas, ya he aprendido a rápida y automáticamente salter como un bandido, lo que ayuda, MUCHO. Igual sigue siendo bueno. Muy bueno. Recomendable.

The exceptionally beautiful girl incessantly getting marriage proposals, but always refusing them all, to his father's great chagrin, whose patience keeps wearing thin.
Kinda antisemitic, but I guess I can go along with it, for plot's sake. Maybe not the best or politically correct work by Bécquer, but definitely the most shocking and impressive of his shorties I've read so far. Not bad, not bad at all. Recommendable, if you can ignore the blatant antisemitism.

Un desagradablemente malvado y prejuicioso herrero trabaja día y noche en su tienda, con su inusualmente amable y elegante hija siempre a la ventana del segundo piso arriba. La excepcionalmente hermosa muchacha recibiendo incesantemente propuestas de matrimonio, pero siempre rechazándolas todas, para gran disgusto de su padre, cuya paciencia se agota.
Algo antisemita, pero supongo que puedo ir con la corriente, a razón de la trama. Quizás no el mejor o más políticamente correcto trabajo de Bécquer, pero ciertamente el más impresionante e impactante de sus cortos que he leído hasta ahora. Nada mal, nada mal en absoluto. Recomendable, si podés ignorar el flagrante antisemitismo.

In the middle of a war and the occupation of Madrid, due severe lack of housing, a battalion is hosted in an old monastery. One night, their captain there falls in love with the most beautiful lady he has ever seen in his life. Only problem is, she's made of marble!
Nice! Not a bad idea I guess. For a short story it was worth it. Sort of predicable on the whole, and the classical overly descriptive prose of Becquer never fails to irk me a bit, but that final image of the ending certainly leaves a lasting impression. Nice. Love hurts.

En plena guerra y ocupación de Madrid, debido a la grave falta de vivienda, un batallón es alojado en un antiguo monasterio. Una noche, su capitán se enamora de la dama más bella que jamás haya visto en su vida. El único problema es, ¡que está hecha de mármol!
¡Interesante! No es una mala idea, supongo. Para un cuento corto valió la pena. Algo predecible en general, y la prosa clásica sobredescriptiva de Bécquer nunca deja de irritarme un poco, pero esa última imagen del final ciertamente deja una impresión duradera. Lindo. El amor duele.

My first (and hopefully my last) book or poetry/anti-poetry. Serious enough to pay homage to the genre, and irreverent enough to give it my personal FU and send it where it belongs.
I'm giving myself solid 3 stars, because, after all, this is still poetry, and though extremely short, it was enough for me to feel disgusted having trudged on this soil.
Are there books of poetry? Sure. Are there books of anti-poetry? Also, sure. Are there books that are kind of both? Probably not. So this is my gift to the world, this aberration. Enjoy!

¡Asqueroso!
Un pequeño libro de siete piezas de poesía y antipoesía, variando desde versos tradicionales hasta libres, desde poemas de amor hasta obscenos, haikus, una "Oda" y algunas quintillas. “Mi Asqueroso Libro de Poesía” es una muestra irreverente de poesía anticonvencional, que seguramente puede encantar tanto a amantes del género como a detractores de poesía por igual.
Mi primer (y ojalá mi último) libro de poesía/antipoesía. Suficientemente serio como para rendirle homenaje al género, y suficientemente irreverente como para darle mi saludo personal y mandarlo a donde merece.
Me doy sólidas 3 estrellas porque, al fin y al cabo, esto sigue siendo poesía y, aunque extremadamente corto, fue suficiente para hacerme sentir asqueado de haber transitado este camino.
¿Hay libros de poesía? Seguro. ¿Existen libros de antipoesía? También, seguro. ¿Hay libros que sean ambas cosas? Probablemente no. Así que este es mi regalo para el mundo, esta aberración. ¡Disfrútenlo!

There was once an innocent naughty boy, whose evil uncle-priest made him do all the temple’s chores. The boy was miserable, and all alone in the world. Until, one day, he found his best friend and hope— in a slug!
Well this was fun, in a way. I’m giving myself a solid 3 stars for the story, rounded up to 4 for that special scene and that 3-word line that I LOVE and made it all SO worth it. I’m not going to spoil it, anyone who reads it will probably guess what I’m talking about.
This is so weird reviewing myself. Anyway, it’s a very quick and direct shortie; dark, humorous, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and very very poignant, I think. 16 pages short and packing a punch. Oh and apparently, or so they tell me, it’s also plagued with symbolism, allegories, metaphors and god knows what, and don't look at me I don’t have the faintest idea how any of that stuff got in there because I don’t even know what that means. I just wanted to write a story about a boy and his slug and somehow I may have accidentally landed something deep. Go figure.
Anyway. It’s free! So the link is right there below, if you wish to risk it. It’s also available for free on Kindle Unlimited and will be on Wattpadd as soon as I’m finished uploading it. But please, I don’t want your money, least of all from my GR friends. I’m not looking to make a living out of writing, and if it’s 0.99 listed on Amazon it’s only because it didn’t allow me to put 0.
Also, not proud to admit but, I didn’t always get my books the right way; so this is kind of my way of giving something back to the world and atone for it. If you feel indebted or whatever you can spread the word and if ever decide to get off my lazy ass to finish something else again I may capitalize on that. It’s not like a have e shortage of ideas, I have like 30-40 drafts in various degrees of unfinishedness, just sitting there gathering digital dust. Me loves procrastinating.

Había una vez un niño inocente y travieso, cuyo malvado tío sacerdote le obligaba a hacer todas las tareas del templo. El niño se sentía miserable y completamente solo en el mundo. Hasta que, un día, encontró a su mejor amigo y esperanza... ¡en una babosa!
Bueno, esto fue interesante, en cierto modo. Me doy 3 sólidas estrellas por la historia, redondeadas a 4 por esa escena especial y esa línea de 3 palabras que AMO y que hizo que TODO valiera la pena. No voy a espoilearlo, cualquiera que lo lea probablemente adivinará de qué estoy hablando.
Es tan extraño reseñarme a mí mismo. Lo que sea, es un corto muy rápido y directo; sombrío, gracioso, conmovedor, desgarrador y muy, muy emocional, creo. 16 páginas cortas y con buen impacto. Ah y aparentemente, o eso me dicen, también está plagado de simbolismo, alegorías, metáforas y Dios sabe qué más, y no me miren no tengo la más puta idea de cómo llegó todo eso ahí adentro porque ni siquiera sé lo que eso significa. Yo sólo quería escribir una historia sobre un niño y su babosa y de alguna manera pude haber conseguido accidentalmente algo profundo. Andá a enteder.
Lo que sea ¡Es gratis! Por lo que el enlace está ahí abajo, si quieren arriesgarse. También gratuito en Kindle Unlimited y disponible en Wattpadd, ni bien termine de subirlo. Pero por favor, no quiero dinero y menos de mis amigos de GR. No busco ganarme la vida escribiendo, y si en Amazon aparece precio de 0.99 es porque no me dejó poner 0.
Además, no me enorgullece admitirlo pero no siempre conseguí mis libros de la manera correcta, así que esto es en cierta forma mi manera de devolver algo al mundo y expiar. Even after marriage he's unbelievably happy, as she carries the house with such grace and efficiency that they can afford almost any luxury, even with his moderate income as an office clerk. Only two things bother him, her passion for theater, and her inexplicable obsession with artificial jewelry.
A story that brings heavy reminiscence of Guy's famed 'Necklace' story, but with a very different twist. Ah, but the Guy never fails! Even if maybe not his best, this little story certainly has his sublime moral touch written all over it. And that fantastic lingering feeling at the end of a lesson learned, or missed. But either way— Maupassant makes his case.

Un cuento de Guy que trae muchos recuerdos de su famosa historia 'El Collar', pero con un giro muy diferente. Ah ¡pero Guy nunca falla! Aunque tal vez no la mejor, esta pequeña historia ciertamente tiene su sublime toque moral escrito por todas partes. Y esa fantástica sensación remanente al final de una lección aprendida, o perdida. Pero cualquiera sea el resultado—Maupassant expuso su caso.

Hey, not bad! Not bad at all. This had all the vibes of one of Poe's finest, but without the alienating vocabulary, or the convoluted writing, so inevitably characteristic of him. I'm impressed. For something written in 1800 this was delightfully simple and grounded. Apparently also considered one of the first modern ghost stories. Finely done Heinrich von Kleist, whoever you are sir.

Wow, ¡nada mal! Para nada mal. Esto tuvo toda la vibra de uno de los mejores de Poe, pero sin el vocabulario alienante, o la escritura enrevesada, tan infaltablemente característica de él. Estoy impresionado. Para algo escrito en 1800, esto fue deliciosamente simple y nivelado. Aparentemente también considerada una de las primeras historias modernas de fantasmas. Muy bien hecho Heinrich von Kleist, quien quiera sea usted señor.

Man this was good! My first Tolstoy and getting the feeling I should urgently read more by the man. This little 7 page shortie really stroke powerfully and resonated very strongly to my religious, lapsed catholic and deist side, all at the same time! Even inspired me to write an essay of my own which may or may not one day see the light someday. This was almost perfect, and left me quite an image I hope I don't ever forget. Highly Recommendable.

Un importante Obispo que navega hacia un Monasterio se entera casualmente de una pequeña isla indígena habitada por tres piadosos Ermitaños. El clérigo decide visitarlos, en un esfuerzo por enseñarles el camino para llegar a Dios.
Vaya, ¡esto sí que estuvo bueno! Mi primer Tolstoy y teniendo la sensación de que urgentemente debería leer más del hombre. Este pequeño corto de 7 páginas realmente impactó poderosamente y resonó con mucha fuerza en mi lado religioso, católico no practicante, y deísta, ¡todo al mismo tiempo! Incluso me inspiró a escribir un ensayo propio que puede que vea o no la luz algún día. Esto fue casi perfecto, y me dejó tal imagen que espero no olvidar nunca. Altamente Recomendable.

Nice! I enjoyed where this was going and the message. The ending felt a bit preachy and kinda letdown, but still good. I would've worked out things differently though. On the whole this was quite enjoyable, and especially considering the year it was written. Very nice. Not a fav but inn certain circumstances I can see myself recommending it.

Louise y Hugo son el matrimonio perfecto. Ambos ferozmente independientes, haciendo su propio camino en la vida, pero viviendo juntos y compartiendo las tareas del hogar por igual. Su felicidad suprema es la envidia de muchos. Sin embargo, todo queda en peligro cuando la irrupción de un tercero amenaza con destruir su perfecta vida juntos.
¡Interesante! Disfruté hacia dónde iba esto y el mensaje. El final se sintió un tanto sermoneador y un poco decepcionante, pero igual bueno. Aunque yo habría encontrado otra forma de resolver las cosas. En general esto fue bastante entretenido, y especialmente considerando el año en que fue escrito. Muy interesante. No es un favorito, pero en determinadas circunstancias puedo verme recomendándolo.

Meh. I do have humor but this didn't hit it. Maybe this is better read chronologically in order as part of the "Reginald" collection book rather as a separate standalone short story. Dunno. Doubt I'll ever find out.

En un intento por reformar a Reginal, la oveja negra de la familia, Amabel, una dama respetuosa de la sociedad, le encarga al rebelde jobven que ayude con el coro local. La idea parece prometedora al principio, aunque las cosas no terminan exactamente como se planearon.
Meh. Tengo humor pero esto no pegó. Quizás esto sea mejor leerlo en orden cronológico como parte del libro colección "Reginald" en lugar de como un cuento separado e independiente. No sé. Dudo que algún día lo descubra.

This was mostly ok. Not a bad concept, all things considered. I certainly appreciate where this was going. This could've been a great story given the right mix. Unfortunately, this shortie is plagued with Melville's personal touch and his infallible tendency to turn even a great idea, like Moby Dick, into something borderline boring and difficult to bear, much less enjoy.

Si tan sólo pudiera tener un momento para dormir y descansar por un día. Pero, ay, Madame necesita que le arreglen el vestido, ¡inmediatamente!
Mi segundo Huxley y suficientemente bien. Para 6 páginas vale la pena, no decepciona. A veces,, una historia corta buena y eficiente es suficiente para dejar en claro un punto.

Two con-men and a widow set up a scheme to swindle some money from potential matches. The unexpected happens when the widow falls in love with one of her suitors.
Not bad, it was ok, to an extent. This is classic O. Henry with his little mischievous twists, similar in a way to The Gift of the Magi, but at the same time different. For a meager 5 pages short story I think it was worth it.

No está mal, estuvo bien hasta cierto punto. Esto es clásico O. Henry con sus pequeños giros traviesos, de una manera similar a El regalo de los magos, pero a su vez diferente. Para una historia corta de escasa 5 páginas creo que vale la pena.

There was once a young acolyte who was a apprentice at a temple, but his teacher priests where not happy with him. Everywhere, at every moment, he just couldn't stop himself drawing cats!
This was nice! Amusing, with some quotable moments, and on the whole fairly enjoyable, for meager four pages at least. With a boy and a priest, it reminded me a lot to the short story I just have recently written lol.
It should be free domain but can't find it in Gutenberg. Bummer!

Había una vez un joven acólito que era aprendiz en un templo, pero sus sacerdotes maestros no estaban contentos con él. En todas partes, a cada momento ¡no podía dejar de dibujar gatos!
¡Esto estuvo bien! Entretenido, con algunos momentos citables y, en general, bastante divertido, al menos para apenas cuatro páginas. Con un niño y un sacerdote, me recordó mucho al cuento corto que acabo de escribir recientemente jajaja.
Debería ser dominio público pero no puedo encontrarlo en Gutenberg. ¡Bajón!

Deep in Moscow suburbs, a volatile educated Student reluctantly helps her obnoxious illiterate neighbor Teresa write a letter. For whatever reason, the two can't stand one another, but in helping each other, they just might find some sense of common ground, and secrets that reveal more than is shown.
Oh man this was GOOD! Sheer brightness. Well, at least until the very end, when the author went all preachy and philosophical and totally blew it. But right until then, solid 4-5 stars. Quick, funny and emotional too. Highly amusing, and equally poignant.
I really enjoyed the humorous undertone and ruthless bluntness in many of Gorky's statements, idioms and style of writing. I'm not sure if this is something I want to pursue further, but certainly wouldn't mind running into more of his works in the future, someday. We'll see!

¡Mastodonte!
En lo profundo de los suburbios de Moscú, un volátil educado Estudiante ayuda a regañadientes a su desagradable vecina analfabeta Teresa a escribir una carta. Por alguna razón, los dos no se soportan, pero al ayudarse mutuamente, tal vez lleguen a encontrar algún punto en común, y secretos que revelen más de lo que se muestra.
Vaya, ¡esto sí que estuvo BUENO! Pura brillantez. Bueno, al menos hasta justo el final, cuando el autor se volvió totalmente filosófico y sermoneador y lo arruinó todo. Pero hasta entonces, sólidas 4-5 estrellas. Rápido, entretenido y también conmovedor. Bastante divertido e igualmente emotivo. Realmente disfruté mucho el tono humorístico y la franqueza despiadada de Gorky en muchas de sus declaraciones, modismos y estilo de escritura. No estoy seguro de si esto es algo que quiero perseguir más, pero ciertamente no me importaría encontrarme con más de sus obras en el futuro, algún día. ¡Ya veremos!

Man, Russian literature is poignant AF! My first Dostoevsky, and hopefully the beginning of many more. I can only speak for this little shortie, but if all his writings are as impactful, I can certainly see where the author's legendary fame comes from.
I can only say so much about this story without spoiling it, so I'm just going to say that... it is definitely memorable, more than Recommendable, but not at all the average christmassy story. Take that as it may.

Pequeño niño está triste y solo en la oscura habitación, la anciana del rincón es mala, el otro está borracho, y mamucha duerme y no despierta. Dándose por vencido, decide salir a pasear y hacer un poco de turismo por la ciudad. Hace mucho frío afuera—¡pero es Navidad!
Caray, ¡la literatura rusa sí que puede ser terriblemente emocional! Mi primer Dostoevsky, y con suerte el comienzo de muchos más. Sólo puedo hablar por este corto, pero si todos sus escritos son igual de impactantes, ciertamente puedo ver de dónde proviene la legendaria fama del autor.
No puedo decir mucho sobre esta historia sin espoilearla, así que solo voy a decir que... definitivamente es memorable, más que Recomendable, pero no en absoluto la historia promedio navideña. Tóma eso como quieras.
