im afraid im a chronic Kharon girl thru and thru, but i also love the rest of the guys equally. especially *ahem* Achilles, because he was barely in this, and he didn't talk. and my rule is... it's always the quiet mysterious ones (✿◡‿◡)
i can't believe this is written by jasmine mas. i've read & enjoyed her other books, but her writing in this has improved SO much. i just feel like everything flows better, less choppy. plot is even more engaging, and the characters have a little more to them.
now... don't go in this expecting accurate depiction of greek mythology with brain melting lore. this is, after all, still a reverse harem romance.
in fact, this was highly enjoyable to me because it was fun as hell. it touched serious topics, sure, but the base of it was still romance and comedy. and fun fantasy. this ain't the book to read when you want to fill a hole percy jackson has left you. it's like comparing apples to GeForce RTX 3080. they aren't even the same thing.
the last 20% of this book got me breathing heavily clutching my pillows with a death grip at 3 am. the way everything was revealed and then the series of events that happened after.... *gasp* my god, i love my silly little RH book. nothing else gives me quite the same kind of joy.
shout out to the altar scene, because thank you. i am so grateful to be alive.
just a little sidenote for myself: i think this book would've had higher ratings if it hadn't made its way out of the lil RH community. it's honestly one of the best bully academy RH books out there. checked all of my boxes in that regard.

“Whatever it is, you’re going to be okay. I promise. I’ll make sure of it.”
I find a bit of myself in Emily, so when Jack said that to her it did a little something to my heart. I've always needed to hear that from the people around me, but I never did.
At least I got to hear it through fiction, spoken by one of the most perfect fictional men in romance, Jackson Bennett.
“I’m listening, Emily. What do you need?” “I need you to fix it.” “Name it. I’ll do it for you.”
I loved every single second of this. I'd categorize this as fluffy romance, but some of the moments did pinch my heart a little just because they were so perfect it made me bitter because real life could never be like that for me ...more

“And then she laughed. I fell in love with her all over again.”
6 stars. Not even a single doubt in my mind about it. I think this is the best contemporary romance I've read in 2024.
I know it because I just finished this book a moment ago and I'm already looking for others that will give me the same feelings and I can tell it's gonna be a hard task. The bar is currently kinda high up there.
RY heard me say BRING BACK MEN WHO YEARN and immediately got to work on creating Hudson motherfuckin Ellis.
“I didn’t want to be some anonymous, fleeting, erasable guest in her life like the others who had come before me. I wanted to be engraved, etched, and carved so deeply into her soul that she’d never get me out.”
This worked for me because it checked every single one of my romance boxes I didn't even know I had. This year I kind of neglected contemporary for fantasy because nothing in contemporary had what I wanted in my romance.
Variation reminded me of why I love romance novels so much. I adored all the little details and layers in this book. No lines were useless or felt like an afterthought or a filler.
Even a twitch of the eye or a light smirk from one of the characters meant something. I blushed and giggled over hand placements. Something as simple as Hudson holding Allie while they were swimming had me GRINNING like an idiot. She smiled. Just smiled. And he fell in love and it made me blush so hard. THAT is why I love romance novels.
“Her eyes lit with mischief, and if I hadn’t fallen for her eleven years ago, that look would have done it. Hook. Line. Sinker.”
Hudson and Allie fell in love when they were teenagers. This story is about their second first chance because they never really got to start it the first time.
They hadn't talked to each other in ten years, but Allie was back in Hudson's little town recovering from an injury, and she hated him, while Hudson still pined for her.
“I’ll fold,” I promised, my voice lowering. “I’ll turn myself inside out if it means I get to be hers.”
Allie is a famous ballerina and Hudson is a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. It made for an interesting story. I enjoyed all the ballet parts and also all the rescue parts.
This book felt like RY was READY to write contemporary romance. The plot was great and the characters were all SO incredible and so necessary. Some of them were frustrating but it the drama really spicy and I was so seated for it.
I loved the Rousseau sisters, the Ellis siblings, Juniper, Hudson's best friend, and all of Allie's friends and foes. Even the Mother. I kinda pictured her as Sylvie from Emily in Paris but with Elis Grey's attitude lmao ...more

“I made you my person, and you don’t fit in my life, but my life no longer fits me without you.”
A winner from Jewel E. Ann. What a beautiful love story.
I think what I loved most about this is that the story felt normal and real. Jamie (25), the fmc, is a travel nurse. Fitz (35), the mmc, is a smoke jumper. Just two regular people falling in love with *for the most part* real-life problems getting in the way.
Both of them are such GREAT characters. They had incredible banter, and their love for each other was SO convincing, I was so hurt for both of them, mainly Jamie.
That girl, I swear. I wouldn't know what to do if I was in Jamie's position, I definitely wouldn't be as strong. Loving someone who you knew could never go all in with you... I would throw myself a pity party and curse at the universe for putting myself in that position. But not Jamie. She didn't even beg. It was hurting her, but she didn't know how to stop being in love with someone like Fitz.
And Fitz was an amazing mmc. He was honest, and he was really funny. He wasn't *that* grumpy, but he wasn't really a fan of people. Jamie was a very likable person, and ten years younger than him. Yet they fit like a puzzle piece.
I loved it when I could see why they would fall in love with each other.
This book was a real page-turner because I needed to find out if they would ever find a way to meet in the middle. Their problems were so real and valid that even I couldn't find a way out for them. It was one of those things where the love just HAD to be bigger than everything else.
“Jaymes, if I were normal, I’d love you enough. The problem is, I’m not normal, so I’d love you too much.”
I loved that all the cards were on the table from the beginning. Fitz made it clear what he could and could not do, and Jamie made it clear even though she wanted and wished she could fix him, she wouldn't do that for him. He needed to want to fix it himself. So no one was really leading anyone on, but boy did it still hurt.
The mystery and the twist at the end were incredible. It was heartbreaking and sad and frustrating and I loved every single second of it.
The epilogue got me SOBBING. Good to know that it's possible for the love between two people to be bigger than everything else. What a bittersweet conclusion to a very real love story.
“Jaymes isn’t the girl of my dreams. I never allowed myself that luxury. She’s the girl who has taught me how to dream.”
this book is like if someone asked me what my dream scenario would be in a zombie apocalypse........and i'm not even talking about tthis was so fun!!!
this book is like if someone asked me what my dream scenario would be in a zombie apocalypse........and i'm not even talking about the four men being in love with you. i'm talking about the survival base.
the fmc's base in this book is like what i would daydream if there were a zombie apocalypse. electricity? cozy trailer home? crazy amount of food - including all kinds of CHEESES?! A GAME ROOM?!

it could've been a 4 star read, but it was 100 pages too long for me. it felt too slice-of-lifey and this is just not the kind of story where I need to know the unnecessary details of everything
and just like the first book, every time gareth's pov chapter came up I sighed in disappointment like I was about to get tortured. his chapters are THAT boring to me.
objectively though this was much better than dark fae. relationships were more fleshed out therefore I was more attached, the tension was glorious (especially with ryder), and when it wasn't boring and not Just Another Day of Class, it was actually pretty exciting and intriguing and fun.
but picking up the book felt like a chore to me more times than not. every time I started to feel like OH, I'm actually having a good time with this. gareth's pov came up, and my excitement just withered away...more

weird way to propose but yes
oh what a rollercoaster this book was. the first like... 80%? of this book was hilarious. I've never laughed so much reading fantasy before lmao. got me wondering when the hell did this book turn into a romcom.
we got to see Lavenia & the Masters slowly letting their guard down around each other and it was both hilarious & heartwarming to see. their banter was top tier. somehow everything was the right amount of funny, romantic & heartbreaking.
⤷ “Why won’t any of you admit that you’re friends? Seriously, after so long, it’s a little weird.”
“Because friends die, koli.” Andel looked like he pitied me. “Families die. Lovers die. They all die. It’s better to have nothing.”
I was glad to see more of the Masters and why they are the way they are. I think it's my most favorite part in this because everything started to come together & I started to understand so much (after three books of being lost af lmaooo)
one thing I do know for sure tho, is that Jane is a GOD when it comes to writing men who take care of their women. I saw this in Ironside, and I saw it in this book too. It was less obvious in this because these idiots are strangers when it comes to emotional connection - but Jane made sure we saw it as a reader.
and, I have to mention an important scene from this book:
⤷ “But you hesitated.” “I hesitated.”
ah, man. I obviously can't provide context because of spoilers. but, he hesitated. I can't explain why this scene means so much to me especially since I knew he hesitated but having this confirmed after all that torture just.... made me giddy. for some reason, I hyper fixate on Helki out of all the Masters lol. and the way it was all said just... ahhhhHHhhH idk I love Helki sm that's all
I ain't gonna lie I thought the Masters didn't have it in them, but the ending proved me wrong. I know without a doubt now that they LOVE Lavenia with everything they have. Jane you are a GENIUS. I loved how it all played out at the end. Seriously no notes. Even Lavenia's decision in the end to "be the bigger person" and not choose the other road made me SO damn proud, where usually I would be all about revenge.
⤷ “How do you feel about her?” Andel finally asked, though there was a hint of cruelty in his words. He already knew the answer, but he hoped that forcing Vale to say it out loud would torture him in some way. Vale touched the mounting shelves of his prophecies about me and whispered, “Possessed.”
I liked the plot and I honestly ADORED all the characters but this was such a weak intro to the series imo
I was BORED out of my mind. Every time I thoI liked the plot and I honestly ADORED all the characters but this was such a weak intro to the series imo
I was BORED out of my mind. Every time I thought I'd made a dent & then I looked at the page count and it said that I had only read like 10 pages I wanted to set myself on fire
This book DRAGGED. I wish I could scream at them to hurry tf up. I wanted to cry everytime it switched to Gareth's flashback pov because no offense but I do NOT care about seeing what happened to you through your pov just let me know in the PRESENT
Also the instalust ALMOST lost me but this book was mainly flirty banter and sensual glances except for that one time but that's ok because it turned angsty
I have faith in the next books tho because I genuinely like the characters (LONG LIVE RYDER I HATE SNAKES BUT I'LL MAKE AN EXCEPTION FOR YOU BZZT BZZT BITCH) and Elise had my dream hair from 2015 (I didn't end up with lilac hair but I did have pastel pink hair so CLOSE ENOUGH)
And this book had some cool moments too and those kept me going but the cool moments and boring shit ratio is kinda ass in this I am sorry
This also had one of my fav moments ever in an academy setting like this with the shower scene... I was like I would love her forever if she did *THIS* instead of the usual route authors go through (this particular shower scene is popular in this genre and usually the authors have the MMCs save the fmc or some bullshit like that)
BUT NOT IN THIS!! Elise actually did what I hoped she would do and honestly I was impressed...more
