I didn't give this book a great review because it never captured me fully. I felt distant, and I don't think the distance was because of the brutality, etc. I am used to all of that when I read. There is Some magic that Some authors pull off in Some books where I feel pulled in, where I care, where I feel like I am being manipulated in a good way. Gay didn't pull me in all the way. She pulled me in just enough to get me turning pages but not enough to care. I felt frustrated with the portrayal of the characters.
This book reminded me of Gone Girl because of the sort of over-the-top story line and the page turning thriller quality. However, with Gone Girl I was sucked in. I was willing to believe anything and overlook things that didn't make sense. Like I said, I am not aware of what made the magical difference for me in Gone Girl. But it is the key difference for me.
I think Gay has a great book in her if she keeps going. I look forward to that....more
