this book fucking SLAPS. I love this worldbuilding, I love Ellie, I love the allegory for colonialism, I love the GHOST DINOSAURS and the VAMPIRES? Why does this cover make it look like it's like a Serious Book. I guess they're ghost dogs but just looking at the cover I had assumed it was about like sled dogs in the snow?? I D K and I know you're not supposed to judge books by the cover but we all do it, and this book does NOT have a fun cover IMO! But it is very fun!! I want you to know that it ...more

It turned into slightly more of a horror than a mystery toward the end, but it wasn’t overly graphic and it was a unique read that I enjoyed. A murder mystery with ghosts, vampires, indigenous legends, magic, fairies, lots of good dogs, a woolly mammoth, and some brave and sweet teenagers who know the value of a good research database. #yafic #whatthelibrarianreads

Elatsoe comes from a long line of Lipan Apaches who can raise ghost, but they only raise animal ghosts. When her cousin dies he visits her dream and asks her to bring his killer to justice. This begins an incredible fantasy novel with faeries, vampires, and wizards.

What I love about Darcie Little Badger’s books is that they are strong female characters that are not involved in romantic storyline, because they are Ace. It is about magic and building friendships and being true to themselves.

Really enjoyed this debut - wonderfully unique world-building and a great mystery/horror/suspense novel for teens (bonus points that it's a book I can actually recommend to a wide audience of teens, it feels written for teens and not written for adults who like YA titles). ...more
