Reading the synopsis of this book makes you think—who came up with this bizarro plot line? But reading the book is lush, beautiful, steeped in setting and historical reference. It almost edges on magical realism with a hot air balloon ride and a trip to the arctic, but while reading, it’s utterly believable and compelling. A beautifully rendered book. One of my top reads of the year.
